NEWS Milford: we sorted it out

Anthony Milford has passed through the nine circles of football Hell and emerged much the same - still laid back, circumspect and always eager for succulent meal beneath the Golden Arches:

“I don’t believe it’s the end for me here at the Broncos. It’s not true that I don’t care. The fire is still burning inside me and I want to be the best player I can be. But as a playmaker, if you aren’t getting good ball, there’s not really much you can do. I’m only 26, so I feel I still have a lot to offer, whether that’s the Broncos or another club. I have to bounce back and I believe I will.”

Sunset, here we come

Kotoni being promised five-eighth hasn’t bothered me at all. I am not worrying about Kotoni or anyone else. The club has an obligation to sign some players and it doesn’t faze me if Kotoni could be the five-eighth. Competition is always healthy, so I‘m not worried about that. We will see what happens when Kotoni gets back."

“I have heard the reports about not being offered a new Broncos deal, so I saw ‘Kevvie’ about it and he has reassured me that everything is in my control. I have to play well to get a new contract. He said there is no timeframe, whether it‘s one or two weeks, but he assured me he hadn’t given up on me. I definitely haven’t given up on myself."

"I’ve taken it on the chin, I still enjoy myself at training and I will do my best to fight back. For whatever reason, my performances haven’t always been consistent in games. I am realistic about the situation. I’ve had a few discussions with my manager about my future but nothing is set in stone."

" It’s my ideal plan to stay at the Broncos, but if it doesn’t happen I have two kids and a family to look after and I have to do what’s best for them. If that means leaving the Broncos, so be it, but everything is in my control. My destiny is in my hands. Hopefully over the next few months my future will take care of itself.”

Destiny

“It caught me by surprise, no-one likes to be dropped. Kevvie called a meeting and told me my performances weren’t up to scratch. I had my views against it. I said to Kevvie it’s hard for the halves to do something when a team loses by 50. That’s not a criticism of my teammates, but when a side is on the back foot, it’s difficult for the halves to dominate a game. But we sorted it out. Kevvie said he wanted me to be busier around the ball and that’s a good challenge for me."

"The Broncos aren’t just going to give me a deal for no reason. I know I have to play well and if I do that, I will have a future here, so it’s on me now.”

It is interesting that point. I remember Wayne saying if he got it right with Milf he could become one of the greats. Wayne didn't get it right, he tried to turn him into something he was never suited to be and look at the end result now.
We would have a very different milf on our hands if Wayne had never left

I remember that Canberra where similar pissed at Milford leaving as we are with Walsh....With all the Walsh cum spraying around, let's just chill. Could be Milf 2.0. I do recollect Issako was rookie of the year 2018...fast forward

Issako is a good winger. He's trying hard at fb, but I think he goes back to the wing when Coates leaves. A lot of it is our fault playing players where they want to go, or moving them out of their natural positions (Milford, Issako, Oates...). They need to be told to stay with what they are good at. Not everyone is Lockyer. I hope we don't screw Staggs up the same way.

I don't disagree but he was already on a downward trend before Wayne left. Milf was never going to be an organising playmaker. Wayne is a truly great coach but with Milf, he got it wrong in the end, that should be acknowledged.
This is where the whole POTY meme comes about. Milf was awarded that in his first season of being the primary playmaker so he was hardly shitting the bed.

In a year in the already downward spiral of the club and we’ve covered all this before, Lodge was the actual player of the year that year. I also remember there being a bit of a surprise that Milf won it.

I’m not denying by any means whatsoever the last coach screwed almost everyone up but he really only accelerated what had already started with Milf.

Correct, i think the tipping point was a little earlier. Bennett saw the writing and tried to get him back on track. I have to say that if WB couldn't get him firing - then what coach in the game could? WB doesn't expect complex football and Milford did have players around him capable of letting him do his best work.

The biggest removal for the equation was Hunt. If that WAS the reason for Milford's wheels falling off, then he is never going to make it as a stand alone playmaker. In the current NRL game, there isn't a space for a solo guy in the halves waiting for waves to surf.

It’s hard to say Wayne couldn’t get him firing when he was still performing at a level that he was in the top few players in his position in the competition, keeping in mind he played origin that year.

it’s a bit of a pointless argument though I guess because it happened and is in the past and milf is a shell of his former self.

Saying lodge was the actual player of the year is similar to saying milf was the actual 2015 Clive Churchill medalist.

Go back and watch games of 2017/2018. He had started to go missing back then. His origin selection from memory was due to a complete lack of options for QLD in the halves? I dont think its correct to ledger origin selection as an indicator of form that year.

He was selected as our man of the match in 7 of the last 10 games of 2018 which he did with a bung shoulder. And 2017 is the year he played half the season while needing a shoulder reconstruction (not 18 like I have previously argued and I just double checked.) - It's why I take exception to people calling him pea-hearted or a soft **** or whatever else, he's tougher than he gets credit for (well was, he is now an emotionally damaged mess).

Anyway this is probably the last time I'll post in this thread - feel free to respond but I'll just leave it at the above.

Its a wonder the Dragons have not made a play for Milford.

Milfs Origin career is not really a highlight, we lost both games he was involved in and from memory he wasn't spectacular. Two games over two series and one of them was late bench inclusion. The other he was knocked out early.

A classmate of mine at TAFE is a DJ, and he just showed me a clip of him working a gig at Richlands. And there dancing right behind him is Milford. Clad in some bright orange jersey, sunglasses and one of those rapper hats with the big visor with a drink in hand, and he was clearly off his face like he had just been selected for Origin. You wouldn't think looking at him that his NRL career was on eggshells. The guy just does not give a toss.

I had a chat with my classmate about it, and he basically eluded to me that Milf looks to him like he is very wrapped up in his family and friends, and that in his opinion he needs to get away from them so he can focus on his footy. Judging by the video I saw, I tend to agree with him.
