NEWS Nine threatens to cancel its support of NRL

We're going to have a fucking conference system.

FMD.

a conference system wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for us ... because apart from the Storm, we would have many of the easier to beat teams ... like The Titans, Warriors, Dragons, Cowboys

does anyone else see the irony and hypocrisy from Phil Rothfield when he has a go at Nine for "trying to kick rugby league while it's down" ...

Phil and his rugby league journo mates spend their entire days doing everything in their power to paint rugby league in the most negative light possible to get clicks ...

And all the while, making a quick buck out of it.

We have a habit of underestimating teams like that.

Nine really are treating the NRL with contempt and very publicly. There is some seriously gross and self interested shit in here, including losing one FTA game to Fox for....reasons. They're pissing on us and calling it rain.

Time to seek out 10 and offer them 1.1 billion a year for 4 years and in that time, put plans in place to transition the game onto internet broadcasting in partnership with Netflix or Disney. Nine can take their Tracy Grimnews and their Married at first Shite and their delayed telecasts and **** off. I hope fatty and Sterling keep their gigs in covering the game elsewhere but the rest you can just cut adrift.

It is doubtful 10 have that sort of money ... They were recently saved by an American network, who wouldn't be interested in spending loads of cash unless they could see a significant return

9 won't get rid of NRL. They would be fucking stupid to do so.

Just playing games. Pushing for renegotiating for terms that suit them better.

This is the other thing ... The NRL just can't tell nine to **** off they have a contract for something like another 4 years ...

if what is being reported today is true then nine just got a big advantage in their negotiations.

The Courier Mail is reporting that channel ten currently has no interest in bidding for the NRL rights

No but Channel 7 are going for it.

That's fine as long as its a multi year deal and not just a short term for whatever this season ends up being which would mean we could be left high and dry next year.

true ... but the NRL will need to consider what happens to their sport when the AFL in particular but also cricket, Olympics etc come back onto seven ... the NRL could ened up being bumped from seven's main chain.

this all assumes that the nine contract was made null and void, which i don't think it was. from the reporting it seems like all the act of god clause does is prevent nine from suing the NRL for breach of contract in the event an act of god (like this pandemic) prevents the NRL from fulfilling their contractual obligations

I've gotta say, I'm still a little staggered that in this day and age it's still worth so much to the free to air channels to broadcast the games, considering Channel 9 don't even broadcast the Saturday games. I'm assuming Origin and the finals are what makes the sums of money being outlaid viable for them, because it doesn't seem to make sense otherwise.

From the reports, it seems like what nine are trying to do is get back exclusivity for the Friday night game. their ratings have dropped with the simulcast agreement

So Nine are using the Covid drama as an excuse to re-negotiate something that they originally accepted. **** them.
