Makes me sick.
The system is completely broken for a fair comp.
I am not saying we have not benefited from it in the past either, but there is no denying its doomed to fail if something doesn't change.

Why? Because the top teams have really good recruitment scouts?

Gap between the top 4 and everyone else really starting to show again.

The difference… conditioning.

Acceleration; sharpness; recovery; etc is a level above for those top teams. They just play at a different tempo and can blow the lower teams away.

Yep, all comes down to coaching.

These players leave their teams because they can't show what they can do due to shit systems and bad coaching.

Who can blame them for leaving? It's up to clubs to give their players an incentive to stay. Money isn't everything, although some do chase the money and regret it.
Its a feedback loop of shit.

Good players leave > team suffers > more good players leave > rinse repeat.

Its the opposite for the top 4 sides.

Recruit good player > team benefits > more good players want to join > rinse repeat.

The system needs a shake up.
Some sort of incentive to stay with the team you debut for or something to that effect.

That has zero to do with it.
Melbourne's scouts didn't discover Coates.

It has to do with premiership potential (and maybe under the table deals).
The problem being if you are in a struggling team, you will gladly leave to a performing team for unders and the cycle perpetuates itself.

Def agree with that. I remember the floating of juniors being given a discount on the cap.

NRL aren't pro-active enough with this. The Raiders blew up about it when we poached Milford.

So Brisbane why didn't you fight more to keep Coates with a big offer. Or was his mind made up to leave to Storm. I didn't follow the details closely. But everyone knew he was a gun and Cobbo isn't a patch on him.

I want to fold some Kents

Note Wrighty.

Melbourne is a prime display of what a difference a coach makes.

He took less pay to play for a better side.

Easy fix. Base salary cap for all teams. 1-8% bonus cap per ladder position for the bottom 8, spooners get an extra 8%, 9th get 1% and you'd obviously need to move player signings to an end of season window only.

As it is now, top teams are effectively operating at up to a 10% bonus just by virtue of being able to pay less because they're successful.

That extra million for the wooden spooners gives the fans hope, and puts more pressure on the top clubs to have to pay up.

Or you know, get rid of the salary cap entirely.

Xavier must think he just won the lottery, went from a garbage heap like Brisbane to a team like Melbourne with rep players in key positions

I am happy for him actually
Im not happy for him, i hate the traitorous dog. But i completely get why he did it.

edit: i will put that hate to the side for 3 games a year.

Sometimes they just end up leaving clubs because they cant see a way through. Paps had Teddy, then they lost both through bad management.

Paps is a weird one, pretty sure the Tigers didn't fight one bit to keep him, and thought he was too small etc etc.
Thats bad talent recognition.

Teddy left for a team that was top 4 and backed by a billionaire offering him deals too good to refuse.

Once your out of the running, you actively go for the spoon?

**** thats not a bad point.
Imagine strategically losing and gunning for as low a spot as possible once you realize you are going to be in the bottom 8.
