NRL 2023 Round 10 Discussion

I listened to ABC Grandstand briefly during the battle of the merges and they said some lol-worthy things.

First they praised the Dragons player for "playing to the rules" and staying down pretending to be hurt to earn his side a penalty. Sullivan scored the set after the penalty.

Secondly, they praised how well the ground was holding up. They also said they had spoken to the groundsman who was happy with the field.

Well, well… look at the parochial donkey fans arguing to keep this farce of a round at Suncorp. Of course you would when you are given an extra home ground game on top of the ridiculous leg up you already received over the first 10 round scheduling.

So pretty much like Sydney teams getting the advantage of staying within the city for weeks due to the number of Sydney teams?

QLD saved the comp during covid so you can thank us for that :smoker:

Sounds like someone needs to take up an argument with Arko about all the Sydney teams surviving the war then

Meanwhile, Annesley:

Do you think there might be a reason why the Warriors feel so aggrieved so often over such a long time?

They've been given nothing and constantly get smashed by the refs

Re: the location of magic round, I'm not going to argue Brisbane just deserves it.

There are two "reasons" for Magic round:
The NRL says growing the game but the real reason is to extract some cash from the hosting state government. The government says tourism but it's so they can say "this event is pumping x amount into the economy, look how good we are. X is the best place".

So the future host will be determined by which government is willing to stump up the most cash. And the tourism numbers are going to drive that.

Townsville isn't going to get it because a 25,000 seat stadium is too small.

Darwin, same reason.

Perth has the right size but WA isn't as interested in tourism as the east coast states.

Adelaide and Melbourne have big ovals but league is a micky mouse sport compared to AFL and the political mileage isnt as great.

For Sydney, the tourism arguement is harder because the majority of teams are already based in and around Sydney. Putting together a triple header is child's play.

But the reality is when it comes to Brisbane vs Sydney, it's just the NRL playing each state government as usual.

New Zealand is the actual best choice for the supposed reasons for magic round - growing the game and tourism. League may take a back-seat to yawnion but it's closer than AFL is. NZ is also reliant on tourism.

TLDR: it's all about which government can offer the most dollarydoos and which government can justify those dollarydoos.

Just have two magic rounds and change the name to Brisbane round and have the NZ one Auckland round having it at Eden park.

No where else makes sense for it, Sydney basically has Magic round every week.

I know plenty of people here in Sydney who want to go to Magic round next year, also I'm planning on going too.

Perhaps now that you have been legged back up to a competitive force by the NRL you can get your regular Friday night game schedule reinstated.

Not our fault your club wants to cash in on us wanting to support our team. You should be grateful, if it wasn’t for us buying tickets to your home game up here every year the last few years you guys wouldn’t have been able to afford your new stadium 😜

You know, the last time Manly got to play their actual home game against the donkeys was in 2014. Get your head around that. And yet, we are suppose to go on celebrating this concept because it serves certain powers… and let’s just ignore any effort to have a level playing field. The whole reason we have this scenario is because of the already unfair advantages the donkeys enjoy as a one team town with a huge fan base.

In all seriousness though mate is it not the Manly board who wanted to take the game up here because there was money to be made? Has nothing to do with us except we were obviously happy with the arrangement so go along with it.

it started with a single game, then they started doing double headers, then the magic round grew from that.

Yeah, this. The double header became Manly v Broncos and Storm V Dogs didn't it?

Now that it's become a thing though, I wouldn't care if they changed the match ups tbh.

Bulldogs/Titans.

The Bulldogs brought their Titans game up here from 2009-12 and Manly did it once in 2011 before virtually doing it full-time in 2016.

If we were running magic round at Accor every year, and the donkeys were giving up their home games to play against the rabbitohs, we would never hear the end of it from north of the border. The Qlders would be screaming blue murder against the NSWRL for conspiring to rip off the QLD teams…

That's the thing though, we don't give up our home games for anything, because no matter where we go it won't pull the same as being at home.

Blame Manly's board for selling out.

Blame Manly's board for selling out.

Blame Manly's local fans for making it more viable for the club to get a better turnout in Brisbane than at home...

NZ sucks as an option because the stadiums aren't near a social hub like Suncorp is. Fans might go the first year but you're just going to get social fans and not the rusted on, 3 days of footy fans that actually travel for this weekend. Brisbane is the only place it works, and for NZ fans to whinge that they deserve something when QLD have done far more and get very little just handed to them from the NRL, it's just crap.

Surely the time zone would rule out both Perth and NZ though? They'd have to get very creative to make it work.

Sydney should do a triple header or two every year. Say Parramatta, Bulldogs and the Tigers play a Saturday at Commbank or Bulldogs, Souths and the Roosters play a Saturday and Accor? Call it the Sydney Splurge Round or some shit.

Then give NZ the pre-season grand final, modern nines equivalent or something they actually deserve. Maybe play a rugby game after it.
