i get that completely, but Marty has had the chance to join the name bus for years and only now chooses to jump. Find it funny that's all re marty...... who was the first player to swap it up? Josh Papalii?

I think it was the Mata'utias. I don't think they could even agree on the pronunciation between themselves

Australian commentators (and Daryl Halligan) have been cringey as **** forever over their pronunciation of Māori and Pasifika names. Not taking the time to get a person's name right borders on being offensive.

It is about time that they actually tried to get it right rather than virtue-signaling cultural initiatives.

I come across a bit strong there, but it really is the most basic form of respect and acknowledgment of a person. It is a commentators professional responsibility.

Many players would be backward in coming forward due to years of systemic racism and their natural deference. I think one of the big turning points was Erin Molan's Hooka, Looka, Mooka comment.

It might not be a big deal to you, but it would be a very big deal to some of the players and their connections with their identitiy, culture and ancestors.

Good grief… I hope they don’t start trying to pronounce my surname of welsh origin in the welsh dialect. I couldn’t myself.

I agree with what you're saying, I think why people are questioning Marty is he's been playing for over a decade and built his whole brand around the Ta-pow pronunciation to only voice how it's supposed to be pronounced it once he came to Brisbane this year, so people are puzzled as to why it took so long for the correction

I can't explain that or why several hundred other players haven't done so over the years. I'd imagine that there is a air of futility about it all for them. Trying to fit in to the dominant culture.

As a teacher I see the same reluctance to correct people of authority in schools, and as a teacher I also know that it really, really is important for students.

This is not snowflake stuff, this is someone's actual identity, and more more importantly for Māori, their whakapapa.

I mean, ex-players aren't pin ups of normal English words, it isn't surprising they have trouble with names they aren't familiar with.

I just think it's a lack of proper professionalism in the commentary sphere, it's their jobs to know all the player names for the game, it surely isn't hard to call up each team and ask them how each name is pronounced if they don't know it or are unsure.

Pet'ro Thiven-othava, if you wouldn't mind.

How much of that is down to the collaboration of this forum? The new cartel!

Watching that Penrith/Newcastle game just infuriates me. That ref, Gough, is a shocker. He's penalised Gagai for dissent with the ball because he was frustrated at Penrith not rightly being penalised for ruck infringement, Penrith go on to score. Then that stupid hair pull penalty. Mate, if you're gonna have your hair long, it's a risk you're taking having it down. He didn't get hit high, so it's just the same as grabbing an arm, a Jersey, or the shorts. Shit, if you left your laces untied and you got dragged down by them, it's your own stupid fault.

Newy were robbed.

O'Brien has said that he'll instruct his players to grow their hair long, if the NRL are going to start giving penalties like the one against Frizzell last night.

JOIN THE #KEVOLUTION

That’s not a bad idea actually….

Suddenly the reason for TIno's disgrace of a haircut is making sense... guy has been playing 4D chess the whole time

(They're still getting it wrong though, I don't think they'll ever get it correct) - Agree 100 with you, and probably would be better handled by broadcasters if the reasons for correct pronunciation of names was part of their style guide

This is one of the lowest quality games I've seen in a long time.

Raiders big time got up for us last week and are now playing like this at home with best players back...
