The only way that works is if Cowboys and Storm field their strongest side. Not many people will pay to see a bunch of rookies running around.

It's something both clubs won't do.

And to be honest, the only reason Cowboys and Storm got such a big crowd in Brisbane for that double header is because it was a double header and the Broncos were playing that night.

A great incentive for their teammates to play.

Let's go and risk an injury so our highest paid teammate can earn 3x my annual salary for 80 minutes (likely less as it's a trial) of football.

Fucking retarded

Not sure where to put this. If this needs it's own thread then mods can edit.

But Melbourne and Nth Qld are blatantly cheating next season.

The sooner these two fuckers retire the better off the NRL will be.

If it's just a "chance for the fans to show them respect" why don't don't they donate the gate takings to charity...

Bloody hell, they aren't dieing. Every club should get this opportunity and it should have to be done at the players home stadium. I know they have had great success but I can guarantee you that it still hurts a little every time those players visit Brisbane and they see every 2nd kid has a broncos shirt on and they get 30,000 plus every week. They play so hard against us because it was their dream to play for us. Stuff 'em, they want a testimonial in Brisbane-play for Brisbane

Trying to get a slice of that McGregor vs Mayweather hype. People would rather see Maranta vs SKD though.

NRL clubs agree to landmark football department salary cap
MICHAEL CARAYANNIS, The Daily Telegraph

August 31, 2017 11:01am

NRL clubs have agreed to a landmark proposal to introduce a cap on football club spending from next year.

A football department cap of $5.7 million will be introduced from next year after a meeting of club chief executives and NRL boss Todd Greenberg.

It was agreed that the figure will be lifted by four per cent in the next three years to enable staff to be given CPI salary rises.

Clubs will have until 2020 to get under the salary cap, and if they do not they will be taxed 37 per cent tax on whatever they overspend by.

Head coach and assistant coach salaries are included, as are training camps. Operational costs will also come out of the cap but not capital costs of centre of excellence.

NRL head of strategy David Silverton said it was an important move to curtail the rising costs of running club football departments.
2016 NRL CLUBS FOOTBALL DEPT. SPENDING

SPENDINGCLUBS
$8M+Raiders, Eels
$7M+Bulldogs, Broncos, Rabbitohs, Roosters, Panthers
$6M+Storm, Sea Eagles
$5M+Knights, Cowboys, Dragons
$4M+Tigers, Sharks
$3M+Titans

“By putting the cap in place it will help ensure that our competition remains competitive and even,” Silverton said.

“It will also help ensure that NRL clubs do not overspend simply to keep up with other clubs.

“And that should help our clubs remain financially sustainable.”

The move will save the game about $10 million per season.

The Raiders, Canterbury and Parramatta were among the biggest spenders last year forking out about $8 million each to run their football programs.

While the likes of Brisbane, the Roosters, South Sydney, Melbourne, Penrith and Manly spent above the proposed $5.7 million.

Premiers Cronulla only spent about $4.5 million last year, while the Titans, the Tigers, St George Illawarra, the Warriors and Newcastle spent less than $5.7 million.

The football department cap will be reviewed in 2020.

Meanwhile, talks will resume between Greenberg and the Rugby League Players’ Association today as they look to secure an agreed collective-bargaining

This is pathetic by the nrl.... when will this Sydney mentality of pulling the top teams down to the bottom teams level "to make it fair and even" stop. Why can't the bottom teams improve their governance to afford to keep up?!

Wayne should be retired by then, so it shouldn't be an issue for us to get under.

Regardless, it's a joke that they're punishing the wealthy clubs.

The Cowboys might miss the playoffs despite being 2 games over .500. Is anyone aware of this ever occuring since the top 8 format came into play?

Good question.

Rugby League Project tells me Canberra in 1999 finished 13-10-1 and still missed out to Brisbane 13-9-2.

95 was a close race as well, both Sydney (.545) and Auckland (.590) missed out despite having healthy seasons. In the Warriors case, they were deducted two points for an illegal interchange. Still they both failed to surpass the Bears despite winning more games than them (Bears 11-9-2).

So are we allowed to hold testimonial matches each round for a different player now?

E.g. The Round 25 Broncos-Eels Jamayne Isaako Testimonial Game.
"We're not paying him anything annually, sir. He just plays for a match fee."

Melbourne's stripped premierships will be re-instated someday with full apologies. Probably a decade or 2 after Smith retires.

So much for the rule saying payments can't be dependent on playing for a particular club. Can we as fans start a 'testimonial' fund each time a player comes off contract?

Brisbanes 2018 Israel Folau, Cooper Cronk, Sam Burgess, Darius Boyd testimonial game will be a cracker.

Nah, at least SKD knows how to find the white line.

The NRL cops it a bit but seems they have done really well with some of the ticket prices and food deals they have brought in for the finals. No excuses not for the crowds to get out there and make the atmosphere even if you aren't a fan of the particular sides. Is Allianz the stadium they whinge about with how hard it is to get there or is that ANZ?

ANZ.

Kevin Walters has ruled himself out of the Titans role.

I can't believe there was so much talk about it.

He flat out said when it all began that he was not taking the job.
