CROSS FORUM NRL Grand Final Discussion

At least make them catch it, I hate when they're basically doing the splits to have one foot out.

I used to think you had to catch it when I coached kids .
So that`s what I taught them . Catch it stradling the line .
Then I saw it on TV and learnt you only need to touch it with one foot out .
oops !

With the Panthers domination over the past 5 years, does this re-open the discussion for the NRL to introduce a draft system?

How do you set up a draft to avoid things like tanking ect? Really interested to see how pro draft ppl see it working.

People forget Souths without Latrell lost by 2 points to Penrith and we choked big time last year.

You can’t really stop tanking but in sports where drafts are done it really doesn’t happen as much as you think. It creates a losing culture and players don’t like losing so it’s a non-issue really.

i mean the NBA is notorious for it in the past just outright tanking and these days trading away your best assets providing you own your first round pick for that year in the hope you get the no 1 pick.think the mavs even copped a fine 22/23 for leaving out their top players to ensure they missed the post season to improve there draft position.

That was back when players had full time careers and were only part time footballers and couldn't live off their footy income alone.

With players being full time professionals now and making a lot more money where they can live off their footy income, I would say they would be a lot more open to it now. As long as the NRL and the RLPA can come to an agreement and include it in the CBA, the NRL can introduce one.

Plus most other professional team sports have a draft in one shape or another, so there’s precedent.

The draft was a massive pay boost , so to say it was rejected because of money is short sighted .

Did you read those links I posted ? Reserve graders were asking the same money as Kangaroos . So pay wasn`t the issue IMO .

People from Sydney having to move to Queensland or North Queenslanders having to move to Sydney whether they want to or not could cause some conflicts .
Then there is the rookies who get drafted to a club they don`t want to go to .
They play one season then leave to go to the club / region the wanted originally .

It could be done . Can Valandys and Abdo pull it off ? I have doubts .

Really? Wow I never heard of that before! Also, did you know that Damien Cook was a beach sprinter?

I didn`t post it for your benefit .
It was information for the people who were too young or unaware of what went down . And why we don`t have a draft today . Because obviously some folks were unaware .

But thanks for your input . Not ....

Yes, all draft systems need the support of the players association to work.
No reason why Vlando can't negotiate this in the best interest if the comp.
Frankly, I'm surprised the bottom clubs haven't pushed for this a bit more.
It's a faster way for them to improve their rosters and challenge for finals.
Also provides a point of interest in the off season.

Pretty sure that was to stop from being traded to a club they didn't want to go to.

Where it might come unstuck is the contract requirements when a player is drafted.

At the moment they have a free market to get the best possible deal for their player, but under a draft they may get picked by a team under salary cap pressure or by a team that just doesnt want to pay them what the manager has them valued as.

This would leave drafted players to have set salaries for their first contract, which may not go down well with the RLPA and could also open up the restraint of trade again.

NFL takes this a step further where salaries are set based on position as well... given quarterbacks are worth far more money than linebackers, etc. and first rounders having higher contract caps than mid and late round picks.
