I know the pound is in trouble but even on a good exchange rate, that is a hell of a dumb deal for a 32 year old.

That being said, the quality of super league is pretty ordinary and a player of Bird's (declining) skills would do pretty well over there.

A Catalans spokesperson told foxsports.com.au that the contract will have a coaching element to it where Bird will play for three years while also acting an an assistant to the Under 19s team.
In the final two years, he will move solely into an assistant role with the Super League squad.

That makes more sense.
