NRL Throwback

Imagine if the 2007 Grand Final was played under modern interpretations. Crocker would have been sent and Billy would have been lucky to stay on the field.

The crazy thing was, we just accepted it and the only fans who were upset were Manly - understandably so.

I can't remember what the obstruction interpretation was at the time. I remember it had to be fairly blatant with the opposition player hitting the deck and the player taking advantage of that space.

Then they had a crackdown that everyone hated to start 2007 and we forgot about it until Hodges scored a controversial try in the 2012 decider.

Try or no try? I'd say no try, but the officials have been extremely lenient in this department before. Two Brisbane players involved, Brisbane were by far the biggest beneficiaries of obstruction calls last year...

TRY - Benefit of the Doubt
They can have the chicken!

something to watch waiting for the game tonight

Throwback to one of the worst performances by a player and it only took a minute and a half:

The Craig Smith knock on is so epic

Great game. Especially after losing to the Dragons the week before, made you feel confident again. Also I remember some conspiracy theories how the Broncos lost to the Dragons on purpose to get on this side of the draw.

Every try feels like Deja Vu, watching the replay. However the moments that stuck with me the most is the way Lockyer received the ball at pace for the final Broncos try of the game, and Petero's face when he scored.

I know Dane Carlaw copped a lot of flak in the early 2000's from going from Tarzan to Jane, but I thought he redeemed himself somewhat in 2006, not saying he was amazing but definitely better.

I've heard about this so many times, but had never seen it

Bloke just imploded again and again

I think he was a touch hard done by with the dead ball thing, but man, that performance was an all-time given the context.

NRL Throwback have uploaded that 2004 International between USA and Australia where Australia came back from 24-6 down to win 36-24.

Playing on a field that would have been confusing as **** for the players and you can see that with the kick-off after USA's first try where Locky kicked it well over the sideline, using the NFL goal posts instead of Rugby League goal posts and those goal posts were even behind the in-goal area instead of having the in-goal area behind the goal posts.

Even playing in quarters instead of halves. The US commentators referring to the tries as touchdowns.

It's an interesting watch.

Round 1 2012
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs. Sydney Roosters

I decided to go back to the very beginning to Madge's first game as coach which coincidentally was Reynolds first game in the NRL.

This was the infamous clash where the Rabbitohs had the game wrapped up at 20-12, only for the Roosters to score back to back in the dying seconds to steal it. Fast forward a few months later and the Rabbitohs would return serve. After being beaten to the ball to concede the match-winning try, Reynolds would score to exact the ultimate revenge.

The left-hand side of the Rabbitohs was stacked. They had Sutton, D. Taylor, GI and King which is an embarrassment of riches but it was to a fault. It made it easy for the Roosters to stack that edge, knowing the Rabbitohs would struggle to take advantage of the other edge.

The Rabbitohs ran with their left, kicked to their right and just didn't know how to deliver the knock out blow.

The big take-away for the Rabbitohs was the performance of Sam Burgess. He played everywhere in the pack, smashed the Roosters in defence and was a real handful with the footy. Burgess had practically missed the entire 2011 season, so his inclusion immediately turned a weakness into a strength. When they were at their best, it was when they had the younger players on the field out-working the Roosters. The likes of Clark, Tyrell, Peats, Burgess etc. just rolling up the sleeve and laying a platform for Sutton to work off of.

As for Reynolds, it seemed like he was given very basic instructions. He was kicking to his corner and his only other involvement was a very basic shift which he didn't quite have the spacing or timing down pat. They also gave him some protection with Corrigan as his centre, who was more of your defensive style centre. All in all, a mixed game but he did get a try assist kicking to Chris McQueen like he would to Corey Oates but as you have to expect with rookies, he didn't set the house on fire.
