NRLW & General Women's Rugby League Discussion 2021-22

Purontakenen drops it from the kickoff and Upton scores first play off the scrum. Both conversions missed 4-4.

Burleigh getting some questionable calls (or non-calls)

2nd error on first tackle for Natassja. Burleigh with all the possession

Tries to Gray and Faifua. Burleigh 14-4

Valleys just have no ball and can't stop second-phase

Pratten gets one back on the stroke of HT. 14-8

Ali scores under the posts and cops some knees in the chest from Upton for her trouble. Prop Brianna Clark takes over conversion duties. 14-14

Riorden scores after a Burleigh mistake off a bomb. 20-14 Valleys

Faifua scores another. Brown with a shocking kick. 20-18

Upton superman stretches and scores. 24-20 with 1:30min to go

Burleigh win 24-20 and the first ever State competition.

Ali may be in a bit of judiciary trouble if they review these games. Not on report by the ref but possible knees in the back on Temara and a high-ish shot on Upton. Temara also on report for a high shot

Zahara Temara POTM

Great game, really enjoyed and it was so firey. Loved it. Bears hung in there and got it it in the end but I think the BHP has been a success and will only mean good things for the Broncos if they act quickly.

Parramatta, Newcastle and Gold Coast join the NRLW this year with the Warriors dropping out.

Our ranks will cop a massive blow with about a 70/30 split of girls based on the GC. Also mentioned is ‘talent equalisation’, so yeah we’ll have maybe 50% the team we did last year.

I can only hope the bond of winning premierships will keep some key players.

Millie Boyle, Tamika Upton, Tarryn Aiken, Tazmin Gray, Chelsea Lenarduzzi, the Temara sisters, The Breayley-Natis, Georgia Hale, Karina Brown and Jessika Elliston just to name a few are all from the GC area, and even Romy Teitzel is now living with Tamika. Most of these players are ours and now we might look a lot more like Valleys+Panthers going forward rather than the Burleigh Bears + Friends.

We’ll definitely keep Ali, Robbo, Meg if she manages to recover in time and Natassja will probably join, Lavinia Gould, hopefully sign Brianna Clark and Lauren Dam. We’ll lose Fressard to the Knights probably as will Dragons lose Kelly. Titans will already have Shaylee Bent and Jamie Chapman ready to go, maybe grab Zara Canfield back off us too.

Will be a very anxious time. Provided the talent spread actually lifts the standard, then expansion is a good thing, but I don’t think the depth is there yet.

Should’ve been four teams again for 8 weeks, play each other twice and two finals.

The conspiracy thinking in me is this is just another way to wreck the club, by putting our only competitor within 600km into the league, and happens to be where most of our players are based

Edit: a report says a proposed scheme is centrally contracted elite players which are then distributed amongst the clubs. Fuckery of the highest order to ensue no doubt

The whole setup is typical NRL administration. There’s 10 weeks until round one and teams don’t know who they can or can’t sign and thus don’t know what positions to target. There was the National Championships a month ago and it should’ve been finalised before that happened. While I’m sure scouts from all involved teams were there, they could’ve focused their efforts in tandem with their work with the State comps.

Not to mention the impact this will have on the players’ lives. They all still have jobs and now have to try and get 8 weeks off work with only a couple months notice. Terrible, but expected, work from NRLHQ

Central contracts confirmed for 30 elite players with 4 being allocated to each club. Clubs can negotiate for a 5th from that remaining 6 which can be possibly one player that has refused their allocation. So it's sounds clear from that wording that you had an option to refuse your club allocation, but you can then be up for grabs by anyone.

Most of the 30 players have agreed to terms with announcements coming soon, probably after Origin (25th) but maybe prior.

Top 4 players get $28,000 wage, 5th player is negotiable and free agents (non-top 30s) can earn between $8,000-$16,000. Elite wages designed to lure players to other/new clubs to spread the talent. I'm curious If you can refuse to be centrally contracted at all if you don't care about the extra money and want to stay at your current club.

Brisbane are apparently prepared to fly Amber Hall in for another season, whether she's a Top 30 I don't know, but she likely would be. In fact you could name up to maybe 10 players from our squad that could conceivably make that list. Ali, Amber Hall, Upton, Aiken, Boyle, Robbo, Lenarduzzi, Loz Brown, Romy Teitzel and you have the injured duo of Raecene McGregor and Meg Ward. Meanwhile underselling Annette Brander, Shenae Ciesolka, Lavinia Gould, Jess Elliston, Shannon Mato and Tallisha Harden. All representative players in their own right. Interesting times ahead for player movements.

So just a calendar check, we are 8-9 weeks from the first round (Rd 23 of the men's comp), and no club officially has signed anyone, although there appears to be some forgone conclusions.

Meanwhile the Lions in the AFLW for example, while granted don't have to contend with extra teams and probable 'salary cap' fuckery, have already re-signed about 90% of this year's premiership winning side plus one external signing and don't play their next season until 2022.

NRL is so goddamn amateur-hour

Interesting AAP story out saying virtually no Broncos players have signed up to the central contracts. Millie Boyle is quoted and has refused a move to the Gold Coast to stay at Brisbane.

Another part of that story quotes her as saying ‘you wouldn’t split up Melbourne to fix the Tigers’

Tigers copping it from the women’s comp now haha

What a legend

Not sure what the answer is but the NRLW does need to be artificially populated so it keeps going. If teams are weak and you get beaten 100-0 then it will fall over.

The comp has such a massive turn over about 40% year to year and such a limited pool of players. You can't have the same attitude as you can to men and let the strong survive.
