NEWS Pack your bags, Anthony!

Newscorp is reporting Ben Ikin has told Milford’s management he will not be offered a fresh contract and must find another club from 2022 onwards. He is expected to hit the open market immediately. Nothing on whether this will affect the rest of his season.

Can you imagine if he got it though

Yeah, but what does he expect when he's getting paid a million dollars???

Do players not even do the maths on this? Actually, don't answer that. Unless you play for one of the two teams that has an unlimited salary cap, if you pay one player massive dollars, it takes money away from the players that you are able to surround them with.

For Milford to get the perfect scenario that he seems in order to perform, he needs not only an organising half to steer the team around to get field position and build pressure, but a forward pack that is able to win the ruck for you. And a hooker that is able to feed the team good ball. And a top level fullback or outside back sniffing around to take heat off the playmakers so that there is not just one point of attack that the opposition needs to shut down. How do you pay for that when you can only put massive dollars in to one of those areas?

If clubs really took the time to reflect, you'd have to think that not one single million dollar contract has been worth it to a team. Taumalolo has been the closest thing to a one-man game changer. But the moment he is off the field the Cowboys turn to shit, and if teams are good enough to shut him down, they have nothing. Ben Hunt's contract was just stupid. DCE is probably the poster-boy for my argument - he is great at one of those aspects (organising the team), but his contarct has meant that the team surrounding him has lacked, and they are only competitive when Purple Patch Turbo is on the field (and moving forward, how much will he demand? 2x $1 million dollar players in a team?). The Titans with Taylor, and now Fifita, more proof.

Unless you're Melbourne and can stockpile talent, or the Roosters and be able to "negotiate" million-dollar quality in multiple important positions at lower-than-market rates, you simply should not pay a player that sort of money and expect the team to benefit from it. The Cowboys, the Broncos, the Dragons, the Titans, the Sea Eagles. The Knights with Pearce and Ponga. The Warriors with RTS. None of these teams have even been consistently in the finals, let alone challenging for a premiership.

Food for thought also with what reports are regarding Haas?

Apparently he's had offers from a couple of Super League clubs. None named, but no surprises there.

Cronk preps the coffin:

“Well in terms of me if I was Milford I would stop talking and I would just train the house down. That is the only way you can get back into it. It doesn’t matter what your next contract is. You’ve got an opportunity."

“Obviously the Queensland Cup I’m not sure if that is going to continue for the rest of the year and NSW Cup is obviously stalled as well, but train the house down and get yourself in the best possible physical and mental condition and take the first chance you get.”

Anasta nails down the lid:

“I think it is up to him. If he wants . . . probably if it is a money decision I would think overseas is probably the best opportunity for him. But if he stays here he is going to have to start from the bottom. It may not even be in first grade and it may be an incentive based contract that he does have and he is going to have to work his ass off to get what he wants in the end."

“It is going to come down to what risk he is willing to take and how hard he wants to work.”

Manly is already paying both Trbo’s $1m along with DCE.

Only Tom is worth it really. Manly have been pretty inconsistent and non-competitive since DCE signed his deal. It tore the club apart.

Milford opens up on not being wanted:

“There is a bit of sadness about it. I’m disappointed I have to move on, but it’s part of the professional game these days, it’s business, and I have to accept it. They called me in and pretty much said there wasn’t a spot for me next year. They said they had recruited a few halves and with their salary cap at the moment, there wasn’t enough room left for me."

“There’s no hard feelings with ‘Kevvie’. Sometimes I didn’t agree with why I was dropped. I started the year with high hopes, but things just haven’t clicked as a team this year and I have to take some responsibility for that."

“There’s eight games to go so it’s up to me to try and finish the year well.”

Hunger

“It’s hard to get over that grand final. I’ve thought about it over and over. I’ve had some great memories here and made a lot of good friends. I can’t go past the feeling of making the 2015 grand final and the grand final itself. I know it ended badly for us but I look back at the team we had on paper and we had a great squad."

“I know I’ve copped a lot of criticism but I would like to think I gave a lot to the Broncos jumper. The last couple of years have hurt me. I do take pride in my performances and I’m disappointed things haven’t worked out the way a lot of us had hoped.”

“My preference is to stay in the NRL. To be honest, it’s my only option really. I have a young family so I don’t really plan on going overseas."

“I’m not too sure about the Titans. I haven’t spoken to clubs directly yet, so when the time comes, I will put all the cards on the table and see which option suits me best and can help me get the best out of my football."

“I would consider moving to Sydney if I had to. I’ve got two young girls so my family comes first now and I will go wherever I need to for them and what best suits my football.”

“I still believe I have something to offer in the NRL. I believe there is a lot left in me, but I have to knuckle down and be more consistent with my training and my preparation towards a game. If I do that, I will be all right."

“Five-eighth is still my best position. Until another coach tells me otherwise, I still feel I’m best suited to six, I played pretty much every game for the Broncos there. I honestly believe I have more in me. I’m only 27, but I need to unlock that part of myself and get back to playing simple football."

Passion

"I know the hunger and the passion is there. I still love playing the game so hopefully a fresh start can be good for me.”

Wayne Bennett:

“I don’t think the $1 million deal was an issue. It probably put more responsibility on ‘Milf’, but I don’t think it was the reason why he didn’t play well. I don’t know what type of player Allan Langer would have been if he turned up to the current Broncos side of the past two years. Would he have gone on to be half the player he became?"

“The culture of a club is everything and that’s the point I made at a press conference last week. Milf would have felt more pressure than ever, for sure, but he was a victim of what happened at the Broncos."

"Milf is a wonderful player, but he needs good people around him. He was left to do things himself in the halves ... but he couldn’t do it all himself.”

McHunt
Wayne should really stop babying his players. Alf decided to retire and move on the moment he felt he wasn't living up to the jersey any more, so to make out he may have ended up like Milf in a similar scenario is BS from Wayne. Alf had to much self respect and professionalism to sit around and accept being crap, he would of demanded better from himself and others.

Yep. Super League was always going to be Milford's fate since the end of the 2017 season. He was given more rope than the likes of Blake Austin when he was destined to follow the same path all along. All the talent in the world, just zero motivation to make the most of it. He is an unhelpable case.

I think Milford is a good example of what happens when you put all your trust in a ball running 5/8 and not a game organizing halfback.

He can be brilliant at times and he was.. but it's only one play, you need more than one play in 80 minutes of footy to get the right result, Morkel pretty much nailed it. He needs the right people around him to allow him to play that way and for the coaches and fans to be accepting of the way he is playing. He had that in 2015 with Ben Hunt who himself isn't exactly the complete game organizer but he knew what had to be done at the right times.

How many times did we see him try to run it on the last from 40 metres out? you do that against the good teams, you end up stuck in your own end having a discussion behind the goalposts. We replaced him with Tyson Gamble and all that Gamble has brought to the team is a bit of desire and a basic kicking game and it's already an upgrade.

Badel reckons Milford is putting the finishing touches on a contract with another NRL club, but his management won't say which one. Prime suspects are Souths and the Gold Coast.

Despite this he's calling it "official."

Holbrook said this:

“I’m not too sure. All those ones are up in the air and he’s only up the road, which is good. I’m not too sure what’s going to come for Anthony.”

Rothfield reckons the Eels are making a mid season play for Milford. It would only be for the remainder of this season, but would be effective immediately.
