OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Bad news guys, according to David Riccio with Reynolds retiring and Haas gone we are now in a rebuild. Amazing how the media go from Reyno being too old and shouldn't even be part of the team moving forward to his retirement being a "hammer blow" and putting us into a rebuild lol.
How the hell are we in a rebuild when we have. Carrigan Walsh , staggs mam. Still with us ? These journos just make shit up ..

Timing is good. It could have been strung along like the DCE switch, disrupting the whole club. Hopefully he doesn’t clock off and dream of his next club also. Not sure I understand the narrative that he carried the team during a poor stretch including the spoon year, like they couldn’t have lost without him. Best in game bookends are still a luxury purchase, interested in how the Souths spine shapes up in 2027.

Every man and his dog expected Reynolds to retire at the end of 2026(hell there was speculation he was going to for 2026). Didn't we recruit Pezet for that very reason?

As for Haas big loss but not one we can't overcome, it's not like we are lacking quality options there or the room to look elsewhere.

He did his job and helped us win a premiership after 19 years. As soon as the trophy was won, I had resigned myself to him leaving at some stage.

He'll always be a Bronco legend in my eyes. I won't be too upset if he does start to go downhill though. The opinion that he has been flogged and will eventually start to break down may have merit, in which case, without wishing injury on him, him being burned out, less effective, less minutes etc will be okay with me.

24 hours after the announcement im still bitter on it, but then I started looking at stats (completely looking at this glass half full)

In the Semi vs Penrith

Hass 78 minutes for 180 meters
Xavier 41 minute's for 150 meters

GF

Hass 53 minutes for 117 meters
Xavier 40 minutes for 146 meters.

It shows Xavier is ready to be that guy and he has been in the shadow (rightly so) of Hass, and he still has one year under him to improve, who says Xavier doesn't have the same ceiling as Payne and he just needs a proper go at it.

Gutted Hass is off, and even more so that Bennett is getting all this credit for getting him but where one do closes one will open, and this door will be for Xavier.

Payne got a taste of winning and didn't like it, I guess. Hope he kills it this year anyway.

Just another example of NRL free agency being absolutely ****ed. Why this couldn't all happen after the final contracted season in a dedicated window...

What I’ve pieced together today with chats-Payne’s management said last week we’d be keen, Souths met with his manager Friday and put forward their offer, Payne spent Saturday having a think and said yes Sunday.

This same guy has had to think long and hard about every deal at Brisbane but made up his mind in 24 hours for Souths.

Has to be the dollars offered surely. He's always prioritised money, maybe when he saw the amount he just immediately thought "yep, that'll do for me".
