Penalties in the modern game

It'll be any team that the NRL want to push (cowboys, storm, bunnies, etc.)... i know over the last few years the cowboys sit right near the top in terms of getting penalties.

I sit there and watch their games and can barely recall them having to get out of their own end half the time, because they get a leg up penalty... it's changed a little this year because of the 6 agains and not being able to kick it 30m down the field anymore

Although if you're going over 30 years I don't know, because the NRL agenda changes so much
Fyi: 2019 NQ. 162 Most Newcastle 230
2018........211 Most Melbourne 253
2017.........212 Most NQ 212
2016..........170 Most Canberra 222
2015..........175 Most Cronulla 207
2014..........165 Most Souths 219
So, probably not as well favoured as you might think but hey, at least once in their nrl life they've received the most penalties, another thing they have over us!!!

I'd be very interested in seeing the stats on the Eels this year. Their rise to success has been...interesting. I imagine a little bit of encouragement has been helpful, particularly early in the game.

When I pulled the numbers a few Rounds ago they'd both conceded the fewest and also been awarded the most.

I think Parra have been gifted some 55 penalties over 9 rounds which is probably not abnormal for a Sydney club! About twice what the Broncos average😤

We've conceded the most and been awarded the least. Similarly, Manly have now been both awarded the most as well as having conceded the least.

I note that this wasn't the case in the early rounds, and it was really only after Manly screamed blue murder after their match against Parramatta with the forward pass controversy that they have since then been treated EXTREMELY favourably in their penalty counts.

This includes an absolute drubbing of 12 straight penalties awarded back to back the very next week against the Broncos, 7-2 the week after that against the Raiders, and they even managed to win the count 6-4 against the Sharks the week after that, despite getting soundly flogged 40-22 on the scoreboard.

Manly have actually only lost one penalty count since they kicked and screamed to the NRL and that was against another golden child of the NRL, the Knights, who are actually the second best team in the competition at getting awarded penalties.

Meanwhile we sit back and cop it week after week because it's 'out of our control' to do anything about it. Our penalty count win against the Bulldogs was just the second penalty count we've actually won in nearly 11 months.

So just a continuation of the 31 years long rort. I think I need to create a few memes that might catch the eye and get picked up. Never know, this thread might spark a clever journalist into action. A smart one would realize he/she could raise their profile as they'd be the only one and with a headstart. Exposing a conspiracy is always a good thing for a journalist. A career builder.

Imagine if it caught on. So many clicks. I love to see some graphs and I can imagine a graph with all the team lines bunched together and the Broncos line a clear distance away and not in a good way either!

Well, that's pretty much as I expected. I really hate to think it but, even if it's unconscious, there is a distinct bias there. I get the feeling the media has far too much influence on the game. It's pretty obvious the Eels are the big push this year.

Apropos Manly, I watched the STI game from last week and the reffing was pretty helpful for the Drag ons early.

It really doesn't need to be much, a few helpful calls early to change the momentum and the ref can change the game. I think the Broncos have been excellent to be able to do so well, considering what they have been up against. That's why mentality was such a huge aspect for Bennett while he was coaching.

Unfortunately, Cronulla stand as the exemplar of NRL contrivance. Honestly, I can't take the NRL seriously after 2016. It's a joke.

Funny stat popped up while I was looking through last years stats. Thought I'd just throw this stat out there for posters to think about.

Of the 76 penalties we conceded last year one half of the total came from just four players!

Flegler, Gamble, Isaako and Riki.

I'm hoping Gamble and Flegler don't bring us down with the same ill-discipline when they return.

That is interesting and not really surprising for Flegler but the other three are not really what I would have expected.

It's an interesting stat but remember that penalties and set restarts are in different categories.

I also wonder what Lodge and Pangai Jr's penalty average was?

NRL.com has Broncos conceding 99 penalties, Lodge had 15 for the season by my count 7 of those happened at the Warriors in just 6 games.

Stats are weird. I did make a mistake on penalties, it was 84 in total according to Foxsports. Lodge wasn't mentioned in the 32 players.

Here's another strange one!

Errors. Of the players with 16 or more games two of my favourites, Isaako and Kennedy featured at each end.
Isaako: 19. Team highest.
Kennedy: 4 Team lowest!!!!!

Ever wonder why I blew up when people kept claiming he was error riddled?😁😁 In fact, of all players last year Kennedy had fewer errors than almost the entire team except for a couple of guys who played just a few games. As a comparison, Carrigan played 8 games to RKs 16 and conceded the same amount with 4.

Another astounding stat was Kelly's error rate , a shocking 12 in just 8 games.

How did you come to that figure, Huge? Are you just adding up the individual player stats? Because the overall team stats are different.

FoxSports Lab has Brisbane with 83 Penalties Awarded with 99 Penalties Conceded.

Yeah but mistakes are only counted by players paid enough to catch. Kennedy’s stats are clearly made up.

Just added up the penalties of each player. Won't that be the team total? Or is TPJ and Lodge left out?

Good, I can assume then he only missed one tackle all year🤣

Just had a look and I'd guess 83 + Lodge and TPJ would go close to 99.
