Peter Ryan’s back

It's good because he was an enforcer but is he relevant in modern nrl? A lot has changed since Ryan played league.

It says Wayne will be implementing the defence systems. Ryan will only teach the tackling techniques which arm grabbers like Milford need to learn. Shame milf has a bung shoulder and probably won't do any tackling practice.

If the first contact with players is to immediately turn them around and put them on their back that’s not going to be second effort.
That was a lot of our problem defensively this season.
Our first contact was terrible and very ineffective, so thereby requiring too many defenders in the tackle.

We need to learn how to wrestle.

Problem with these roles is the little time you get with the guys, Gilly turned down the role early this season because he said one day a week achieves nothing.

Gilmeister knew his stuff. So does ryan. Defence is a huge part of this game and if you get it right, the rest becomes so much easier. Even an ordinary kicking game can look good with a dominant pack and good defence.
I want us to succeed and if they need 6 days a week to get their defence right, they should do it. I remember one of the players saying in 2015, 80% of their training is in defence. It got results.

We get penalized a lot for it, even when we are giving away some of the fastest play the balls in the game.

Refs won’t penalise us 20-1 no matter their agenda cause their primary motivation is ‘a close competition’. They need something close to an even count. Giving away soft ruck penalties is fine for the first month. The problem is we don’t do our wrestling with finesse to look ok. It just looks like a second effort. Also it looks bad by comparison to our usual he’s on the ground quick everyone off in half a second style.

Not saying we won’t get pinged at first but then we put up video montages of Melbourne and is side by side showing the same thing with different results on the website, get PR people to sell the story to the vultures in the media and WB calls out each one post game (as prev said we can pay a few fines).

WB has to get over his refusal to wrestle. It isn’t an illegal tactic it’s a core part of successful defence in the modern 10m game without unlimited interchange. id like to remove the wrestle to but NRL has repeatedly proven won’t do it and even when they start to do a good job the media beats them up for the thing they have been asking for! It’s toxic. It’s a professional sport. No point in being a martyr. I’d rather we take the high ground on things that matter to the character of the team like developing our own talent and not acting like petulant children on the field.

This.

Bennett needs to get over his hate for it. Our biggest weakness is our ruck, and it's a weakness which will NEVER be solved until we start wrestling. Working players over and putting them on their backs so we have more time to set our defence.
the upside of broncos getting good at the wrestle is that it will be a sure fire way for the nrl to finally put a stop to it in game. Can't have it in the game if it helps the evil broncos

But the 2nd effort is what teams like the Storm and the Sharks get away with. Getting the attacker on their back first isn't what everyone complains they get away with. The "wrestle" is also the arm bars, the 2nd efforts, the crushers etc.

The storm attempt to slow the ruck down through all the phases of the tackle, first defender in is just trying to lock up the arms of the player carrying the ball while holding the man up, this is really obvious technique when you watch them play where the defender just wraps his arms tightly under and around the attackers arms and ball.

Once the ball is locked up they then often commit another two to the tackle while still holding the man up off the ground, the refs are happy to let it go for ages because there is still a bit of movement in the tackle.

They then slowly attempt to push the attacker back and to the ground with the aim of making sure he lands on his back on the ground, often you will hear the ref call held while the man is still in the air but as long as there is movement the ref will let the three tacklers push on and take the man to the ground, it then takes time for 3 defenders to peel off.

Its the first contact and holding the man up is the key for mine to gaining that extra time, the refs really only give penalties if you lay all over the man on the ground and are slow getting off.

Its ugly but is pretty clever coaching and they clearly put a lot of work into practicing the technique.

Do the broncos have the discipline to do these things though?

Fair comment.......for starters our first up contact is farkin terrible at times.

Bellamy gives the impression he is a pretty hard task master, he would just work the players until they got it right and it becomes second nature.

We don't look like we are at that level, at times we look lost with what we should be doing.

Couldn’t agree more. You and I can see it as most of the posters here can. So why can’t our coaching staff.

The wrestling we can do without... Our defence when it's on and working has good line speed and good first contact. As soon as they start back peddling, they start looking around and not trusting the bloke beside them and then we get cut to shreds through allowing quick plays- because there's no wrestle...If they're not going to wrestle they need to get the other aspects sorted.

The loss of Blair was significant to our decline in defence. Gillett missing for most of the year was also.

Because we all have brilliant football minds and the coaching staff are all numpties.

Melbournes eternal success is based on 2 things .

1. The Australian spine
2. Teach the team to tackle in the grubbiest time wastingest way possible without getting penalized.
