I’ve been sitting on my thoughts on the game for some time. Obviously leaving the stadium last night, I wasn't happy about the performance and was finding it difficult to draw any positives but I made a point to stay till the end and to leave with my head held high because at the end of the day, it's all I could really control.
What we all witnessed last night was a total miss-match.
South Sydney are something else. They're on top of their game at the moment and three years of hard-work has paid off handsomely for them. I noticed a lot of people saying they didn't play that well, they weren't expansive, they blew opportunities and to an extent they're right but they're a great footy team who will punish you if you let them.
Unfortunately we did.
I went into the game knowing full well the Broncos weren't going to win. It isn't because I'm negative or don't believe in what Wayne is doing, I just being realistic about the context of the situation. Unfortunately I didn't expect them to be that bad. At half-time I wasn't that disappointed. For me, it was all apart of the script right down to the blown try by Milford, try to Walker and errors by Gavet and I thought Wayne would address the issues and get the boys fired up in the second half.
Unfortunately as soon as Kahu spilled that bomb I knew it was over.
I went from being hunched over on the edge of my seat trying to get as close as I could to slumping back and looking more like...
Sutton & GI scores, the Broncos kick out on the full...the rest of the game meant nothing to me...it was over.
Still, in all of that there were some positive signs.
For one, I actually got a sense that the players knew what they were doing and what their roles were. While it's still very basic stuff there's a lot more intent and purpose about the Broncos play on the opposition line and they actually look to be playing off the back of runs instead of just mindlessly mulling their way through their sets.
The other was the use of interchange. Wayne really made sure to get the most out of his bench and while I didn't think it was to the benefit on this particular occasion I think down the track we'll notice a difference.
It all begins from here and I believe the only way is up. It's not going to be pretty but I have the utmost confidence it's going to happen and for all the fans who endured the long commutes, the heat and disappointment, it will all be worth it.
