POST GAME Post Game Discussion - Round 1 - South Sydney

Why are you dropping Maranta? He was solid last night, didn't do much wrong at all, made the correct choices in attack for a change (Whether to go in-field or go for the corner)

Don't see how Oates or Vidot is an upgrade at this stage, they're both the size of props, we need some speed out wide.

Exactly! Maranta can hold he's head up high, despite the bad team performance. There should be 2 or 3 others who get the flick before him. Leave him alone.

While Blair was OK, when you compare him to actual legitimate props, you see quickly he doesn't have the size or power needed to impact a game.

The thing about having Blair, McGuire and Parker as your starting middle third is that going with the basic simple through the middle approach is like catching a taxi across your street. Just a waste. We really need to Hasler it up and move away from Griffinball. Then Blair might turn out OK if he's really serious about getting back to the top.

Here's a great highlights package:

1:04 - great line by Thaiday
1:35 - confident hands Kahu
2:15 - good positioning Kahu
2:28 - Milford bombs a sitter of a try at the 25 minute mark - put it down to nerves.
2:45 - Reed - a rare one on one miss from defensive specialist - changes the course of the game. 10-2
4:00 - the Thaiday head-high ?
4:35 - Kahu couragous again under the high ball - South Sydney Storm stick to the gameplan of contact on rookie fullback
4:40 - nice shift from the Broncs - maybe Maranta should have pinned them, but Keary was coming across fast. All undone with Gavet's second dropped ball of the night.

5:31 - Kahu undoes all that good work. Brisbane go back into their shell - 12 unanswered points
7:25 - Gillett's try - I thought we were well in the game still at this stage
8:10 - good hustle - Gillett bust on Stewart (f.yeah) but let down by Reed overrunning. McGuire and Milford shaping up inside What if?
8:32 - Whitchurch lazy A defender, easy line break and simple try.
9:23 - Blair capping off an awesome debut - he had a cracker - there's no way he makes that effort at the Tigers. Whitchurch walks before the ball is dead.
9:36 - Perfect kick from Hunt - Milford at 1 would have been onto it.
10:34 - No dummy half - Hodges takes out frustration - good to see he cares.
11:22 - great scramble by Gillett

It's a shame the streak couldn't continue..

That's the first time Bennett has lost against the Rabbitohs at that ground since 1989.

9:20. Example of blatant taking out. Bryson Goodwin jumps a metre behind the ball and deliberately in to Maranta's line. He was never going for the ball.

The amount of shit that Souths got away with was unbelievable. Nothing has been done to stop the wrestling whatsoever... apart for when we got penalised for stuff that Souths were doing all game without repercussion.

With the second 'out on the full' call, am I correct in assuming that since Keary had put his foot on the touchline, that it didn't matter he had it in the air?

No, I think it was a **** up. Should have been a drop-out. I remember they showed a replay at the ground, they don't do that if there wasn't something iffy. But we got away with one by Hannant once, can't complain.

IIRC, it's still classed as out of play unless he put that foot back in the field of play.

Right call was made IMO.

That's what I thought as well Super Freak but I caught Wally and co ooing and ahhing about it so thought it'd be a good idea to get to the bottom of it.

When it happened I yelled 'That should be a goal line drop-out come on refs" then they showed another replay and I couldn't see his foot in relation to the line and added a 'Maybe...I don't know...' to cover myself.

Learned that it's best to watch a replay and make sure of it before pointing fingers.

Even Gould was saying it should have been a drop out.

From what the commentators were saying, his foot had to be touching the ground out of play when he caught the ball for it to be a penalty. But what actually happened was the Rabbitohs player took the ball dead ... Hence dropout.

Hard to blame the official on this one though, as it was on the slow motion footage before i could even pick it up. The ref doesn't have that advantage.

The Thaiday dropping as soon as he hits the defensive line isn't something recent that only happened last night. I remember that back in 2010 and 2011 days, when he was still "good". He actually pushed his legs harder while playing in the middle, but I guess that tired him out since he averaged about 3 or 4 runs a game.

And furthermore getting a quick play the ball on the edges isn't as important as it is in the middle either, since on the next play you generally want to just straighten the attack. It's far more important to make those wide attacking plays count by actually trying something instead of dropping like a sack of bricks.

Because he is without the skills needed for the position. Could he slot in at center or wing... sure but not fullback. Also when I say calm down, it is to put the result into perspective. Yep, we lost to the best side in the comp. It isn't the end of the season.
Clueless is the nicest, softest description I have for this post.

Yes, that was a goal line drop-out every day of the week.
Regardless of where his right foot had been before, he was in the field of play when he caught the ball (left foot), and took the ball out of play himself when he put his right foot down.

That would make sense, otherwise, coaches should be teaching their players to start with one foot over the touchline and using their 'in-play' foot to hop over and claim the ball.

However I've never seen that distinction made before and unless it's my imagination, I thought for instance when a winger puts a grubber kick through - runs over the sideline to get to the loose ball faster in heavy traffic, he has to get BOTH feet in play, not just one.

Again it's such an oddity that it hasn't really been discussed before. For the time being, I'm happy to go with 'we wuz robbed'.

This. I don't know how it's being questioned. This is as simple as it's going to get.

We weren't robbed, we didn't need the refs for that last night.

Wouldn't he need to put his foot back in play before touching the ball though? If you step over the sideline whilst chasing a ball, I'm fairly certain your feet need to touch the ground inside the line for you to be back in play.
