POST GAME POST GAME [Round 10, 2023] Broncos vs Sea Eagles

If / when Riki actually strides out and runs full pace on a hit up .
Maybe then he will blow me away . He way he tip toes up to the defence makes me cringe .

Defensively he has been impressive .
Yeah his line running still sucks but we are terrible on both sides at utilising our second rows except to fall on grubbers for tries. That being said, Riki has found an area that he can make a significant contribution and he is doing it well. Kick chases and defence

And the funny thing is Riki was a great line runner when he first came into the league.

He got a try in the first game after Fifita signed elsewhere and we were all like who needs him.

Seems to have fallen off a cliff in recent years though

He was still running those lines until recently, but dropped it almost every time.

Happy for him to be a mediocre and at times decent line runner if it means he's going to cart the opposition fullback 10 metres and get a repeat set.

Jordan Riki is the best looking man in rugby league and I won't hear another negative word about him.

Good day

This man says helllllllllllllllllllo.

Billy is a waaay more effective tackler .
Take note of who chops the opposition middle`s legs off early in games . Paix is a catcher tackler . Doesn`t stop runners like Billy does .
^^^^^THIS!!
Everyone who says first really doesn't pay attention.
He may not be an elite #9 in attack but his defense in the early parts of every game when the opposition forwards are at their freshest is top level. He repeatedly stops them in their tracks.
This is a big part of Paix looks good when he comes on because most of the really hard work in the middle defense has been done by Billy and the forwards.
Credit to Kevvie, I think it is noticeable that our defensive effectiveness has improved across the board. Ezra Mam is a great example. That guy hits hard for a little guy.

I would have to agree, Billy has really improved in defence, and his overall game a bit lately.

The thing with Paix though is he doesn't have it as good when it comes to Middles when he comes on so it's hard to judge them equally because of that.

But on the Eye test it looks like Billy is a much better defender where as Paix is quite a bit worse defender but at the same time is a better and faster passer and generally makes better passing decisions.

Starting Billy is definitely the right choice because of Paix's defending limitations, it's the one Area that is letting his game down atm.

Watching the replay.

I saw something in this game I haven't seen in a while. Early in the second half Reyno puts in a kick towards the sideline, Turbo puts a foot over the sideline and grabs the ball, Manly play the ball.

There were a lot of confused fans at the game, not realizing because Turbo had his foot out when he grabbed it, it becomes Manly's ball. It's classed as Broncos kicking the ball into touch.

It's not something you see often. Last time I saw it was in '15 I believe when we played the Warriors.

It's a smart play that players should use more often to see the ball dead or into touch, but I believe the ball has to be in motion.

David Peachey is one that I recall doing it a fair bit... think he used to do it taking the ball dead in goal to get a 20m tap.

Can recall a controversial one where he was stretching a couple meters to take it dead and get the tap... wonder if they've changed the rule though, because players touching it before it's bounced dead is a goal line dropout 🤔🤔🤔

I'm probably remembering it wrong though

Yeah it has to be in motion. Carige learned that the hard way in the Eels '98 prelim.

Tedesco is always looking to do it as well, it's a smart play because it allows you to centre the ball and get a set start.

I thought they changed the ball in motion rule? IIRC you could actually sweep the ball over the line for a quick 20m restart if it was clearly going dead.

What is the rule exactly? Because I thought as long as you had some part of your body on or over the line, it's your ball. Usually the mistake fullbacks make is that the ball will bounce over the deadball line, but they'll make contact with it from the field of play, then go take it out, making it a goal-line drop out. I'm pretty sure Matty Moylan did just that against the Broncos in 2015. Then recently Tomas Chester did that against the Titans recently.

I was wondering if you could inadvertently concede a 40/20 by doing that?

That's what I was about to say. Even if the ball has passed the "plane" of dead-in-goal, if it's touched from a player inside the field, it's considered to be taken out by them. Which is the exact same rationale as the touch-it-with-your-foot-on-the-line to make it dead (the same rule being applied to the opposite scenario).

The former allows such actions as Greg Inglis' bat-back from way past the line, as well as the same over the sideline to prevent a 40/20 etc, so it's a good rule IMO.

I believe the ball has to be in motion when you touch it, but it happens so rarely it's hard to get confirmation.

Strangely the rule doesn't apply at all in-goal, although I'm almost certain it used to. I assume they took it out with the introduction of the 7 tackle restart to make it slightly more difficult for the defending team.
