POST GAME POST GAME [Round 6, 2023] Broncos vs Raiders

What job has patients and is open 7.30 - 9.30 on a Saturday night?
Do you have any fucking idea how many ambulances/police are called in that timeframe? I hope your comment wasn’t some kind of gotcha moment.

Oh wait, I remember why I asked the question now. It was the fact that he was also listening to the game on the radio. That’s what confused me about what kind of work environment has patients as well as being able to have the radio on.

Please don’t insult Yeo by comparing Carrigans passing game to his. Yeo goes deep into the line where you don’t know if he’ll pass or run. Carrigan telegraphs it by running 3km/hr before he passes. Yeo also has better footwork (started in the centre/edge so not surprised). There’s only one natural ball playing lock in our squad and that’s Hetherington. Carrigan is a prop who passes and talks. His offloads are much more effective than his passes
Kobe doesn't even ball play as much as Carrigan though, Carrigan has been playing 1st receiver for a huge amount of our edge set plays this season, Carrigan is much more of a ball runner than Yeo is though which is what makes his 1st receiver plays work well as it puts the defence in two minds in comparison to Yeo who will pass nearly always, he can make that up by getting them off closer to the line.

It's a similar but even more destructive option with Haas, he takes Carrigans 1st receiver role when Patty is resting and the opposition can't afford to not commit to Haas because how easy he can bulldose the line, Last year especially on our winning runs both Payne's and Patty's first receiver roles where a big part of our tries at the time.

They can still improve on getting the passes out later but they already have proven to work.

From what I can see our team seems to commit to doing a set play too early sometimes and don't read how the defence is going, if they come at us with a fast line speed we still commit to these plays when they wouldn't work and it does end up looking like we are trying too hard to score off every play, you need to beat them down first and or wait till there is some retreating defence off a fast PTB.

Asked if Broncos players lost focus over the hype surrounding a possible premiership campaign this season, Patty Carrigan said:

“Maybe a little.

If this is truly the case, then nothing has changed. No lesson has been learnt.

All pre-season we've been hearing about how the side has turned a corner and learned from the fade out last year but what's said here says all of that was bullshit because once again they're letting a few wins get to their heads and losing focus.

What are the coaching staff doing? If the players are buying into the hype and getting ahead of themselves, it's the job of the coaching staff to reel them in and keep them focused.

It's very possible a subconscious thing, we have alot of young players in the team most of which haven't tasted success at the top level, to be top on the table for the first time ever it's basically impossible to calm it all down, sometimes experience is the only way.

Penrith is a good example, they where winning premierships with a young team but they had a few seasons before of under delivering and patchy form before they got to that stage.

What's important is we got that first loss and we get to see if experience through failure is finally kicking in through the team.

Like running Rugby ?
Forward passes should not interrupt the spectacle ?
I guess. I don't get uptight over marginal passes. The odd one is always going to sneak past the touchie.

I'm sure a lot of us have done a bit of touch judging at some point in our lives, and know there's a bit of thumb in the wind going on, especially over where the ball crossed the line. Shit happens.

I’ve played in teams like this, everyone agrees the issue is that we aren’t sticking to the basics and are overdoing the low percentage plays, except we all think we are the exception because we’re the game winner so everyone else should stick the basics and play it safe while I get to chance my arm due to my ability. .
I kind of agree but I also strongly disagree. If we're to win a premiership this year, we need to move beyond the basics and make our own kind of music. That's what makes a premiership team. I love that Payne and Patty are pushing offloads. I don't love that our combinations aren't clicking.

Indeed.
Much sage advice contained in this Post Game thread that I assume is being directed at the players. However, wouldn’t be amiss if the coaching staff latched on to a bit as well.

Well WTF is Captn /Coach Reynolds up to out there ?
Sposed to be the greatest rugby league mind in the comp .

Good to see there is a universal speaking out against the rapana penalty, it was such a bad call

many may not agree with this but I am almost ok with a loss at this stage.

keeping grounded is so very important for a young team - and a team that lost its way last year

Then next 2 weeks will show how much we have learned over the off season and start of 2023.

Never want to lose, but sometimes we need to look at the longer picture.

Broncos for ever

I just watched the replay, I’ve got to say, look I know we went down but the last 20-30 minutes is how we should be playing every week. We were easily the stronger side but Canberra defended really well. Yeah the final call on Taupau was awful, try or not, it certainly shouldn’t have been a penalty to them but overall, we threw absolutely everything at them and they were just good enough to hold on. Credit to them but I’m certainly not down on us, I thought we looked the best we have all season that last 25-30 as I said.

I think if Rapana didn't get injured in a way that allowed the pressure to be lifted off the Raiders and for them to get a massive breather we possibly could have won that one but will never know. They were wrecked.
I still think the no head high on Arey was BS especially for Mam to be penalised not long after in a ridiculous call though. But it's the Broncos. We get shit calls from the ref some games while the other team get away with murder in the ruck and just lie all over it and just have to rise above it and not throw the ball over the sideline multiple times a game.
Would love to see the team on a field that isn't falling apart where the players can take off without slipping over.

Yeah, havent commented in here yet but my first thoughts were Canberra weren't losing that game. Sometimes you just have to take your hat off to a defensive effort. We completed poorly but I think that was mostly to do with us trying shit when it was clear they weren't cracking like we expected.

Unfortunate for Taupau but it's contact with the head, and pretty significant contact as well. Accidental, unintentional, but still a penalty.

Not a bad time to have a loss. Regroup and move onto next week. We aren't as good as we think we are.

How bad is the surface at suncorp though?
