POST GAME POST GAME [Round 6, 2023] Broncos vs Raiders

Looks like Taupau has escaped a charge (they've released the charges from the earlier game, so I'm assuming here)

I have no faith in the NRL, MRC or Judiciary so i was certain he'd be charged.

Don’t feel good after any loss but hate to say that this one is probably due(?) it seems. The lack of intensity in tackling, urgency in kick chases, command over tackling & most of all, barge through the middle are utterly lacking in last nights game.

They’ve been lacking for couple of weeks to be honest but the L magnified them. Hope the team & coaching staff picks on them and goes back to how they played first 2 rounds of the year.

None of this running sideways crap. Embarrassing.

Anyways guys, clearly Maccas said cool it with the fucking 20+ points every week. Broncos obliged.

I just don’t understand why we aren’t willing to be patient in attack.
It’s been my biggest gripe over the opening rounds and it was evident more than ever last night.
From memory we didn’t even land a repeat set. Patients and pressure will bring the points.
I’d also like to see Walsh get a shot at taking the conversions, reyno is leaving too many points out there. Not sure what’s going on with his boot this season.

I'm going to look at it from a glass half full approach. We were really poor, no argument about that BUT we were still a strange call away from potentially taking that to golden point. Good teams need to be able to win even when playing really poorly and we just about did. I think our team will learn a lot from that, likely a needed loss that will wake them up.
Same, but I don't think we were "really poor" or at least, any worse or better than previous games. I think it's a reminder those games could just as easily have gone the same way as this one. And, as you point out, this one could have just as easily have gone the same way as the previous. Resilience, attitude, luck, rub of the green, whatever.

Some are saying it was the loss we needed to remind us we're fallible, but I think the coach and players have been more realistic than fans about our success to date.

I keep saying this, but I'll say it again, I think our attack needs work. That's what ultimately let us down last night in a highly physical match that we managed to come out of uninjured, other than a minor head knock.

Looked to me like Atkins was trying to favour being less pedantic over borderline infringements and marginal passes to let the game flow. I like that a lot in theory, but fans inevitably cook up conspiracies when they can't understand why something minor doesn't get called back. And then when a touchie runs in, that goes out the window.

I thought we might have got away with a couple, and so did they. Putting Riki on report for a facial - and leaving it to the MRC - is probably the way to go to for niggly shit that isn't worth a match deciding penalty maybe, but still needs to be stamped out. Taupau's sucked because it could've handed us a golden point victory, and it could've gone a whole bunch of different ways, but I think the outcome was consistent with the overall arch of the NRL trying to get players to take more care. I'm sure we'd be howling a different tune if that were Reynolds bleeding out on the tryline. It was also right of the MRC not to charge it.

Many are saying we lost it on attitude. I don't know if that's really the case. I think our combinations need work, and that can come.

Glass distinctly half full. Until further notice.

I was completely disappointed in the lack of failed momentum gained before we started trying to throw the ball around. We have one of the biggest forward pack in the game and we're trying to go around them because we have some fast players in Wlash,Cobbo,Farnworth. You have to deserve the right to pass the ball and we didn't give ourselves that and we got run over in the end because we didn't get any momentum going and wear out their forwards. Also why the hell is Haas ball playing thats just ridiculous, I said I wanted him passing the ball more but not ball playing like a halfback. Haas just needs to offload the ball a few times a game when he has his arm free and has like 4 or 5 defenders on him. Leave the ball playing to only Carrigan which I love because he's like our Yeo from panthers. Definitely work on him speeding up his passing and that will offer another dimension to our attack. Walsh needs to back himself more and take a few more runs not just look for the pass. He blew a try when he tried a miracle pass to Cobbo when he only needed to put the ball down. Think run 1st and see your options if nothing is there on 1st view. Walsh is one of the fastest in the game and he can beat them slow defending centres, like Croker for example.
Please don’t insult Yeo by comparing Carrigans passing game to his. Yeo goes deep into the line where you don’t know if he’ll pass or run. Carrigan telegraphs it by running 3km/hr before he passes. Yeo also has better footwork (started in the centre/edge so not surprised). There’s only one natural ball playing lock in our squad and that’s Hetherington. Carrigan is a prop who passes and talks. His offloads are much more effective than his passes

I’ve said it consistently this season that our defence has improved but our attack still lacks structure or patience. It could be youthful exuberance but even Reynolds is guilty of forcing passes and trying trick shots rather than building pressure.

It’s all side to side and low % plays in attack. They lack respect for possession and just throw it around until a piece of individual brilliance bests a lazy defender. It only works if your defence can manage to keep the opposition to 12 points despite all the possession you hand over to them. .

I don't mind that we're playing with an attacking mindset of throwing the ball around but fucking hell, cart the ball up the middle first.

Our power game could be up there with the Panthers. If I were Kevvie, I would be putting Patty at prop to partner Haas and giving them the task of tucking the ball under their arm and just running straight and hard. They can generate so much go forward that they condense the defence and we can pick teams apart on the back of that, but we aren't doing that enough. If they can get an offload away, get it away but main priority is getting us rolling up the field. Kobe at lock with his ball-playing can provide that extra attacking threat.

Reyno needs, to whinge less and get back to doing extras with his conversions. He's been shocking this year and his poor kicking form contributed to us leaving perhaps 18 to 24 points out there last night.

Biggest tell for me is lack of repeat sets .
Set up a cpl of tries with early kicks , look like headless chooks in the opposition 20 .
ATM it looks like when other plans don`t work , - give it to Selwyn .

We were flat and the Raiders were up for it. All in all we were complacent across the park. Defence was ordinary, I don’t know what the numbers are for missed tackles but we seemed to be bouncing off tackles and there seemed to be too much space around the ruck, line speed was slow(until the second half) kick chase was abysmal, attack was disjointed and rushed. We were just off all night and lucky we weren’t playing a better team or it would have been much uglier. They need to go back to basics now and build over the next month. The game was a bastard of a game due to the referee not have a fucking clue which made the whole night one to forget.. Some of the referees decisions were astounding on both sides. How did the fullback not go on report for the shoulder charge on Cobbo? The penalty against Mamm for a great front on ball and all tackle was the moment that did it for me. The Rapana incident was unfortunate but should have been a knock on. Happy for play to stop for player welfare and to review the incident but how it was a penalty is beyond me.

New season - new rules .
Its now called Duty of Care . You hit the guy with the ball in the head , you will be penalised . Fell into the tackle = penalty . Knee a guy on the ground in the head = penalty . Jump in the tackle and contact the head = penalty .

How the guy who shoulder charged Selwyn was not reported on field is a mystery . Broncos already have one winger on the sidelines because of a shoulder charge . MRC have their eyes painted on ?

I’m relieved that we will play Tits on the Cost next week. Goodness, Suncorp’s turf looks terrible. We anyhow won’t play there for couple of weeks. Hopefully, it gets better for our R9 game.
Yeah Suncorp won't be getting much of a break

As much as I don't wanna go back and watch this game again, I am at least keen to see the bomb that Walsh put up that Kris made a big return from. I was busy ball-watching and didn't watch our chase (or lack thereof), what the hell happened there?
Bombed it straight down the middle... our kick chase is typically on the edge... but the bigger issue with that play was at the play the ball.

Paix went for a run on 4th tackle out to the right edge, so Riki (our best kick chaser) went to dummy half.

Reyno lined up on the blind side, but Riki went to Walsh instead (not really sure why... other than him possibly thinking the chase would be lacking without him there 🤔🤔)

Walsh put the bomb up straight down the middle of the field, but Riki being at dummy half was offside and couldn't chase the kick.

If Riki goes to Reyno I think he does a little dab over the top for him, Staggs and Cobbo to chase... I think if Walsh has more time to think about it then he should've been kicking to the left corner for Capewell and co to chase.

Walsh will need to work on his kicking if he is to become a real option, because they're lacking any real accuracy or depth at this stage... not a lot of thought to them other than hook it into the air as high as possible.

I think he could become a Cody Walker type kicker where he takes it down the blind side and dinks it over with his left foot to trap the fullback in the corner.
