POST GAME POST GAME [Round 6, 2023] Broncos vs Raiders

It's obvious we're not the finished article yet. We did enough to win the game last night but we also did enough to lose it. Forget the 50/50 calls or even the decidedly dodgy calls, we were the instigators of our own demise last night. The Broncos of old would have settled by the second half and played solid, consistent footy. We were more dumb head and and lazy ass, than cool head and real class in that game.

There is just a sheer lack of poise in attack. Patty running around like a headless chook spread throughout the team. Walsh would have scored that try instead of trying the miracle pass if he was just a tad more relaxed. We're still just too immature in terms of footy smarts, but we're getting there. The question is - can our coaching staff highlight our shortcomings and coach the team towards getting that out of our game. As yet I keep seeing the same dumb panic plays every week.

The Raiders played the typical in your face, put you off your game, game last night and we were unable to stay focused and do our jobs.

One thing i will say that is well within our control is the state of that pitch still. In the first half Walsh was totally ineffective coming out of our end. There were times when he saw a half a gap open but invariably as he went to exploit it the turf gave way and he ended up on his arse. You could see he was much more effective in the second half as the other end of the field was not cutting up as badly.

When we field a backline of deadset speed merchants and our own home ground becomes a disadvantage to us then DD, Ikin and co. and the rest of the front office need to raise hell with the groundsmen at Lang Park as the standards at present are just deplorable.

I'm actually looking forward to us getting away from Lang Park so that I can see just how good our backline is on a fast and firm track.

Reyno needs, to whinge less and get back to doing extras with his conversions. He's been shocking this year and his poor kicking form contributed to us leaving perhaps 18 to 24 points out there last night.

Is it bad to wish bad luck on Corey Parker.

Nothing too serious, just mcl and acl in both legs & torn pectoral muscle in both arms & laryngitis.

I have never disliked a former player, like I do with Parker.
I keep wishing we can somehow revoke his captaincy. I cannot stand him.

The white line fever has been getting progressively worse each week. With Mam and Walsh both at 20 years of age we get to see the pro’s and con’s of the skills/athleticism versus the need to be able to weigh up the percentages of their plays.

Pack was a little flat, Canberra really wanted it and losing Flegs early just sucked.

We sure didn’t need to lose but we were due, we’ve been asking a team to beat us since the Cowboys game.

Heaps to work on before the Titans game and confident we can get back in the winners circle if the boys can take the lessons from last night and gradually improve on a few areas.

For a month the Broncos have been staying in their lane and completing their tasks in a very simple way- last night everyone was taking on everyone's else job and not doing it very well.

They didn't do the little things well.

- Chase wasn't there on kicks, once the ball went past them they stopped, marker defence was terrible.

We were flat and the Raiders were up for it. All in all we were complacent across the park. Defence was ordinary, I don’t know what the numbers are for missed tackles but we seemed to be bouncing off tackles and there seemed to be too much space around the ruck, line speed was slow(until the second half) kick chase was abysmal, attack was disjointed and rushed. We were just off all night and lucky we weren’t playing a better team or it would have been much uglier. They need to go back to basics now and build over the next month. The game was a bastard of a game due to the referee not have a fucking clue which made the whole night one to forget.. Some of the referees decisions were astounding on both sides. How did the fullback not go on report for the shoulder charge on Cobbo? The penalty against Mamm for a great front on ball and all tackle was the moment that did it for me. The Rapana incident was unfortunate but should have been a knock on. Happy for play to stop for player welfare and to review the incident but how it was a penalty is beyond me.

I'm going to look at it from a glass half full approach. We were really poor, no argument about that BUT we were still a strange call away from potentially taking that to golden point. Good teams need to be able to win even when playing really poorly and we just about did. I think our team will learn a lot from that, likely a needed loss that will wake them up.

We weren’t exactly playing competition heavy weights, they were missing half a dozen players too. On paper we should have won that game comfortably, yet it’s not even a surprise that we lost.

There have been patches in games over the last month where they have done the same thing. Despite winning I don’t think we have played particularly well.

I hear you but also, this team was playing like men possessed and getting away with it. We have been red lining for the first 5 weeks, this was always going to happen at some point. We aren't the finished product yet and this really is the difference between us and the Panthers. We can play at that level for a while but we can't maintain it yet, this is a wake up call the team likely needed.

The reality is, when you have a young team, even with good attitudes, if you are flying and the coaches are telling you doing X is going to bite you at some point, it can be easy to hear it but even without meaning to, ignore it or just step off the accelerator that little bit. I imagine this will allow the coaches to say, see guys? This is why we need to keep pushing, 5% results in losing to anyone, even someone who on paper, we are levels above.
