POST GAME POST GAME [Round 6, 2023] Broncos vs Raiders

I was listening on the radio at work in between patients and every time I come in the room it sounded like the Broncos were on the offensive. Can't believe they lost after that lol.

Teams that have done some soul searching after getting thrashed and humiliated the previous week tend to bounce back and win next week. Broncos just wasn't ready for a raging Raiders outfit. That's what happens when you rest on your laurels, good wake-up call.

Sorry, but he played like it tonight.

Constantly lolly-gagging around in the middle not actually doing anything. Got in his prop forward runners way at least 3 times I saw tonight to the point they ran into him. He had no business being there and was just playing lazily and stupidly, unfortunately.

He wasnt garbage, thats just nonsense. He just didnt play at anywhere near his best. Wouldn't even say it was lazy he just wasnt at his best. Pretty much everyone was clunky tonight. I honestly can only say Cobbo was the only player who played with any physicality or intensity.

“Didn’t watch the game and half no idea what happened, are you sure everyone isn’t wrong?”

Nice contribution.

Think he's got that one saved in drafts ready each week. Had to tweak it this week because of the loss I suppose...

Was it this that Reyno was arguing with the ref about after the Marty penalty, or was it the 'unnoticed' late shove in the back he copped after kicking from Guler? I guess as Ginnane said in the call, "if you can get away with it, there's nothing wrong with it" 🙄

Reynolds was talking about the shove. Think the ref dismissed it as 'just a shove in the back' - you know, a late, intentional, dirty shot from a player's blindside - so obviously not comparible to an accidental knee to the head a foot off the ground.

Ricky in the press conference complaining about players staying down. Umm...?

Cooper and Mal talking about the knee and saying that any contact with the head now is going to be penalised, and they are fine with it. If that was true the ball would be in play about five mins every game, and it'd just be penalty goal shoot-outs, because there's contract with the head every other tackle. What you need and what fans want is consistency and common sense - but there's a district lack of that in today's NRL.

I'm happy if any contact with the head gets penalised as long as they are consistent. So whats their excuse for the accident shot on Flegler, or the deliberate shot on Arey?

It is a cliche but perhaps it is a game we had to lose? We had shown some bad habits and concerns against the dragons, dolphins and tigers and our defence has not really been challenged. We will undoubtly encounter games where we have been on the wrong side of the ref too.

Maybe a loss will ground everyone and cause a reset to the headspace we had for the penrith game.

The disappointment is, if you want to be a premiership threat, you have to be able to win against the teams outside the 8. We may not be there yet.

Defence, aggression, patience and field position should be key areas of focus.

Glass half full, Walsh was hurting bad in the post game interview, he was proper foul. It’s great to have a young guy who is so vital and cares so much
Care to share what he said? I couldn’t watch anymore after the full time.

Was screaming all game ‘run straight!’ - no direction from halves, sideways running, no support play, no kick chase.

Not the type of game you would expect after such big signing announcements this week. Still did well to only lose by 6.

He was noticeably frustrated during the whole game. A lot of plays just fell apart tonight but it’s Reynolds that needs to control these games by building more pressure.

We didn’t do a whole lot different tonight than the last month, we just didn’t get away with it tonight. I would say it’s a wake up call or a shot of reality, but every week we hear the club acknowledging the same issues and every week they go out and do the same thing.

The only improvement I could spot tonight was Marty not throwing an offload. Everything else was a bit worse than last week, which was a bit worse than the week before.

I have feared the wins were covering over the cracks in our game and now they are there for everyone to see. Namely, errors, failing to build any pressure, and not being able to put together a composed attacking set in the 20m. Conceding offloads are starting to become a problem again too.

As for the refereeing, the penalty at the end was absurd, but I was seeing red more tonight about Atkins ignoring the earlier high shot on Reynolds only to then award the raiders one a min later that wasn’t even high. It was quite the contrast considering both players stayed down… The 10m was inconsistent too.

I had hope when we came out of the sheds and had our best set of the night just hitting the ball up the middle, and later jagging a try. It was almost carbon copy from the first set after halftime against the dragons. Obviously the message is being delivered at halftime, so I don’t understand what’s happening from the first minute.

We need to go back to basics and playing for field position and possession, the rest will come, but that’s the fundamental part of the game that sets you up for winning against both the easybeats and the competition heavy weights. It’s hard to fathom that we can’t or won’t force a line drop out with a kicker of Reynos quality in the side, probably doesn’t help that we don’t get to the fifth when in the 20m at least half the time I suppose.

When you get in your own forwards hit ups 3 times in one game to the point where they literally run into you and you stop their run for the other side, what else would you call it?

We all love Patty, but he had a shocker. I stand by my claim of lazy and stupid - tonight.

Not usually.

I'll stand by my claim, Wasnt a shocker, and he wasnt lazy. You dont run yourself into the ground playing lazy. Did a few silly things, but thats about it. Just below his best tonight.
