POST GAME POST GAME [Round 9, 2023] Broncos vs Rabbitohs

Games we probably should have a good crack at winning:

Manly, Sharks (we unusually do well against them), Knights, Titans, Dolphins, Dogs, Roosters maybe, Cowboys, Eels, Raiders will be half checked out as they are not making the finals. That's 10 better than decent chances of winning, even if we drop 2-3 of those we may pick up a game among Storm(x2), Warriors, Panthers, Rabbitohs.
I don't really want to harp on this because we both agree it's not likely to happen lol, was just saying it's possible. I gave us wins against Manly, Knights, Titans, Dolphins & Dogs. Losses to the rest. We're likely to win more than that, I know.

Just pointing out that the year only gets harder from here so we really, really need to learn some patience in attack, how to build pressure and respect the footy when we have it. Do the hard work first, THEN put them to the sword. We can go deep, I have no doubt, but not unless we learn the lessons we're being taught.

Breaking the game into 2 halves.

Happy with the first half loss. It was high intensity footy, semi final quality. They stuck in it well and kept working hard.

Second half - lost the plot trying to play catch up rather than keeping in the grind. Silly stuff like staggs kicking to no one - on their line with 4 tackles in hand - wtf seriously? There's another 20 examples of desperation low percentage plays. Lack of grind and didnt get back under the skin of the rabbits. We actually had them frustrated and needed to stay disciplined to execute on that.

I hoped that Capewell would step up. His work load was good but seems hes lost some edge and speed on the flanks.

Madden is learning but so far not good enough to run against a tight outfit like souths. He should have been playing the good cop bad cop with Reynolds and hunting around the ruck while Reynolds was stretching them wide.

It will be an interesting video session.
Staggs will get a ribbing, and the coaching staff have to concentrate on Herbie's reluctance to pass.

A few times now Cobbo has overrun the ball.
In general pretty poor defensively overall although the left edge was shown up the most
I'm with the rest of the posters here re: Carrigan. If Kevvie wants hime to play out the first half then he needs at least a 10 min breather at the 50-55 min mark. And Kobe needs to be on at the 30 min mark to take advantage of his leg speed and quick PTB.
When did tackling a player in the act of passing become "played at" and 6 more. There has to be intent to play at the ball.
Souths got all the luck and most of the calls so it's not the end of the world, but we really can't afford to bomb so many tries (now in multiple games).

The coaches will need to step up this week.

Reynolds's reaction in that Mitchell tackle was odd - particularly as there really didn't appear to be anything in it. He played a good game in general, but I wonder if he was a bit too amped up for this one, and maybe if he had a little more chill out might have rubbed off on the rest of the team.

I thought Paix has been disappointing the last two weeks as well, but I wonder if that's linked to the way Kevvie is using him - seems like he's coming on right before halftime, so he doesn't have much of a chance to attack tired forward before they get a break. He really should be coming on with around fifteen to go, when the game is opening up a little, and give him a chance to work into it before the break.

Doesn't seem like the Webcke/Parker incident where Webcke was being taken off the field. But of course, it's a "minor" incident this time so no question of Souths losing the two points even temporarily.

Remember the fucking drama when we did this and they tried to take our 2 points?

The Webcke/Parker incident was "minor", Webcke was in the hands of 2 trainers 60m away from the play and Parker entered the field slightly early.

in response to that, they introduced interchange cards to stop a repeat from happening ... so i have no idea how this was able to have happened. Either the interchange official fucked up in which case the NRL should (but wont) admit it and take disciplinary action against them. Or Souths deliberately cheated, in which case the NRL MUST strip them of the 2 points from last nights game at a minimum.

It will be clear as day whose fault it was once the NRL have made their decision on the Souths penalty

Did Latrell headbutt him 🤔🤔

I thought Reynolds was at the right intensity for the game, it's just that very few other players decided to show up with him

Been that way for ages, it's a seriously dumb rule, one of many rules I love to hate.

There's a big difference between throwing an arm out into the path of a likely pass and incidental contact in the middle of effecting a tackle.

I do wonder if there was a pavlovian effect going on? They had the right approach in the first half, only for Klein to conjure up these soft penlaties that only seemed to be going one way. Once again, the Broncos fell victim to the opposition getting under their skin and I lost count of the number of second efforts that were being let go. Not that the referees decided the game, but maybe the Broncos would have rolled their sleeves up if they weren't being penalised for it.

This was my concern. I was at work so I only watched the first half an hour, and was only listening to the rest on the radio, but the moment we put in a good kick with a good chase, as soon as it hit tackle 2 or 3 the ref would blow a penalty. Was our discipline that bad (and conversely, were Souths that clean in defence)? We had no opportunity to grind them down because we weren't allowed to. So we HAD to be timid in the ruck and, to no ones surprise, we get rolled for it. It was like the end of 2022 again - we were completely gassed even before Herbie got sent. Were the pushed passes because the players knew they'd have limited opportunities and had to go balls-out whenever there was a half chance? What is the point of high-percentage football if the opposition is getting a leg-up every time you try to hold them back in defence?

They were laying all over us in defence all night. Klein seriously gave them massive advantage and it was sickening to watch.

Yeah I thought Reyno was on fire to start the game but just had no support and then eventually the momentum died and as soon as Herbie was binned it was only going to end one way

Under the same ref last week he adjudged us to be near faultless in defence conceding only 3 penalties (1 of them being the hip drop on Ezra) and 1 six again... this week apparently we're always offside in yardage conceding 6 penalties and 4 six agains.

If we had any other centre in the comp playing in Staggs’ spot last night we likely would’ve scored 3 additional tries. He was so bad. madden‘s defence probably cost us 3-4 tries also.

souths were virtually full strength, wildly inform, and were getting the 2014 treatment whenever they were in any sort trouble in their own end. I hope the playing group moves on quickly from this loss asap because it really was an anomaly.

edit: us not having Haas is like the rorters being without teddy, south’s without lm, or the storm without grant. He’s that hot form wise and so much better than every other middle in the comp.

The one that really pissed me off was a late one for not square at marker! 😂😂😂

Souths literally weren’t square the very set before!

He was looking for reasons when we were defending.

Anyone else disappointed with Paix’ development? I expected speed and vision. He has neither. He doesn’t engage the markers at all. Billy’s service might not be as crisp but he keeps the markers on their toes.

How’s Mozer going in Q cup?

Capewell 6 missed tackles.

Riki 7 missed tackles (i think most of his didn’t matter as they would’ve been him trying to smash the backs and bounce off).

surely there’s better second rowers than Capewell that we can chase.

On Haas, I would’ve backed him in to score off that pass Carrigan delivered to Palasia early in the first half. Just so many little things that could have given us momentum in that game but nothing seemed to come off.
