Q Cup 2010

THE Easts Tigers have added another former NRL player to its star-studded squad, with ex-Cowboys utility Sione Faumuina the club’s latest big name signing.

Faumiuina has had a "change of heart" and is going to play union instead. Charlie Tonga has also retired - again!

I won't start a new thread but I have a serious question for you Q-Cup knowledegable folk

Come early January, I have to make a tip for which team will win the Q-Cup in 2010. Its for the huge tipping comp that I posted about in the General Section.

Anyway, in 2009, with my limited knowledge, I tipped Ipswich after their solid showing in 2008 ... they then proceeded to go terrible

It seems that teams can go up and down the ladder in giant leaps, so can anybody say with any conviction who are the likely top few for 2010.

A "safe" tip for a grand final showing would probably be best, and perhaps a team that could "surprise" - although not a mad roughie if you get my drift.

Any advice appreciated
Mick! ?

Mr Pig don't follow it as closely as I use to, but you are right it is usually a fairly even comp these days and any team could win. Would like to see the squads for each team before given you some chances IMO, will look over Chrissy unless someone else finds the squads and posts them up beforehand

It's always hard to pick the QCup because most of the squads tend to be fairly even at the start but then it depends a lot on what injuries etc the affiliated NRL clubs have during the year.

At this stage I would say 2009 finalists - Sunny Coast and Northern Pride would be right up there again, along with Tweed and of course I have to say the mighty Easts Tigers look like a great shot at it (though I may be a little biased LOL)

Souths & Sunny Coast are probably the safest bets. They will get good players from Canberra & Manly respectively and both have a solid group of core players.

I'm prepared to risk the Pride. They've picked up some handy players but they will have a new coach and won't have Tom Humble or Rocket Rod Jensen.

Easts have bought well but their fortunes will lie with Tim Smith. If he has his head screwed on and plays most of the year with them they win it. They can still go well without him but may lack the knockout punch.

Norths will have a lot of young talented players from the Broncos and have Shane Perry to lead them around. They'll be slow out of the blocks but might have momentum at the right end of the season.

Ipswich have picked up a few very handy players but I have a big question mark over Lazo as a coach.

Burleigh's chances depend on how much help they get from the the Titan's but I would be happy to risk, particularly with the new coach.

Tweed's fortunes are also dependent on what help they get from the Tit's but I think they lack depth in their core squad anyway.

Mackay will improve but won't get to a premiership in 2010.

It's swings & round-a-bouts for Wynnum. They lost a few handy players but have picked up some handy replacements. They've done well with some of the Broncos agreement too with some of the better Broncos fringe players being aligned with the Gulls. I think they could be around the mark particularly with Paul Green as coach.

The Comets are my best (non-biased) smokie. They'll have a nice mixture of youth and experience and have a very tough, no nonsense forward pack. If it's true that Ben Hunt will be aligned to them and Nat Bowman sticks around they will have one of the best halves combos in the comp (outside of Van Dyk an T. Smith at the Tiges)

And of course you can't forget the Mighty Phins. They have a stack of depth in the forwards and outside backs but they lacks a genuine match / premiership winning half. They have recruited extra well off the field though by picking up John Dixon as coach.

So in Summary,

Safe Bets - Sun Coast & Souths Logan

Next Best - Easts

Best Roughie - Comets & Redcliffe

Matt I thought Burleigh were linked to the Broncos, have they changed back to the Titans ??

Didn't know Dicko was back from the UK, shame he's coaching the Rednecks [icon_razz1 , have to catch up with him at a local game this year

Yes mate, Burleigh back to the GC for season 2010.

And Dixon is just living everyone's dream - to one day either play or coach the Phins icon_thumbs_u

Thankyou very much fellas ... your thoughts are most appreciated. I haven't made up my mind as yet, but will certainly let you know my final decision before the cut off which from memory is something like Jan 16. Wish I could get an educated opinion on the VFL like this ... might have to investigate an afl forum ... /gulp

Oink !

News from the Tigers Den - Tim Smith has been training the house down and developing an extremely nice combo with Jace Van Dijk in the halves. He has been training full time with the Broncos for the last 3 weeks, for the Tigs sake, hope this doesn't mean he'll be turning out for the Broncs too often.

Are you serious...

Ipswich Jets
v
Easts Tigers
6.00pm
North Ipswich Reserve

And tRd 2 they are in Mackay....

Yeah a bunch of the Tigers boys had tickets to the All Stars game and now they can't go due to playing trial on the same night.

Some handy players on show @ Langlands park tomrrow for the Tigers v Dolphins trials.

Redcliffe have split their squad into a Red and a White team, with both teams having a mix of Fogs & QCup players. It's looks as if the Tiges have gone with a more defined Fogs & QCup Line up.

The Dolphins get the chance to see their new halfback in action, former Olympic Gold Medalist Jody Henry! (Well same name, but this Jody Henry is a 21 year old Kiwi who played some U20s for the Warriors)

In the Colts, Reddy Fullback David McGrady will be one to watch. Some long time Dolphin coaches say on what they have seen of him in pre-season training he is possibly the fastest player they have seen over 50m

Yeah should be a good match - pity it clashes with the All Stars and I'm going to miss it.

Roll call for Friday night, February 26. Easts Tigers v Broncos U20's at Langlands Park. Who's in???
