Queensland 2014 Line-Ups

We can't drop Billy. He's been an absolute champion for Queensland. A real warrior. Do you need an example? Look at Game 3 of 2008. If Billy doesn't play we're not celebrating eight straight, boys and girls. What about Game 1 of 2011? Who scores the match winner, I think it was one, B. Slater from memory.

He deserves a chance to prove himself.

Once again I agree with the sentiment of this but 2008? 6 years ago , Slater was great because of his unrivalled speed off the mark which he could sustain as well. He no longer has that edge and while he has improved a lot with his passing game he just can't match Inglis overall. Inglis' time at fullback has come, I hope Mal sees it and makes the call.

It's the same old argument though. I completely agree with you because Slater is playing like absolute balls atm, but Inglis is unfortunately our best centre as well. Who covers him in the centres if we take him to FB? We'd be weakening one position too much imo.

and no doubt Harry you've read some of my views on the subject.

For mine the possible bad is outweighed by the undoubtedly good

and I still think......Slater can do a job for us on the wing. (scans the horizon for an enraged M_F having a coronary :becky:)

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Tate
4. Hodges
5. Slater

Slater isn't going well in his natural position, why would he suddenly go well on the wing?

Well he certainly couldn't go any worse than Boyd ....and he's had a free ride for the last couple series.

Also his big game experience vs a player with none, should count for something.....

plus, IMO.....wing and fullback aren't all that different in skill attributes.

As I said, he could do the job for us and I just don't feel inclined to boot him from the side all together

......yet.

I'll take a stab at what I think will be the Game 1 line-up.

1. Billy Slater
2. Darius Boyd
3. Greg Inglis
4. Justin Hodges
5. Brent Tate/Daniel Vidot/Dane Gagai (I don't rule out the possibility of QLD changing their mind.)
6. Johnathan Thurston
7. Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott
9. Cameron Smith (c)
10. Nate Myles
11. Chris McQueen
12. Sam Thaiday
13. Corey Parker

14. Daly Cherry-Evans
15. Brenton Lawrence
16. Matt Gillett
17. Josh Papalii

Unsurprisingly, I thought of you as I was typing that lol. I'm well aware of your thoughts on the matter and I'm certainly leaning more towards the Inglis to FB side of the debate. Not sold on Slater on the wing but it is hard to kick him from the side. The "problem" we have at the moment is we're winning. They won't move Slater from FB as long as that's happening.

Very true. The next two years will be a real test for Mal and the whole Queensland ethos. We pride ourselves on our mateship, teamwork and loyalty but the reality is there are several players in the squad who are at the back end of their playing careers.

Personally, I'd like to see the players make the call themselves. If they are not confident that their bodies can withstand the intensity of Origin they should stand aside. With Origin being such a huge boon for the players these days though, I don't think it will happen.

Whatever happens, we can't let complacency creep in like it did to NSW after their "golden era" period of 2003-05.

I know he wasn't in line for Origin, but curious to know... does the fact that Vidot is playing for Samoa tonight rule him ineligible for Origin?

They were saying that Josh McGuire could play for Samoa and still be eligible for Qld this year, but because that's a switch of alliegence he couldn't go back to Samoa until after the next World Cup. So I assume it's the same for Vidot.

^^^

They seem to be starting to become a little more relaxed when it comes to the minnow nations.

As far as I know, this is the rule.

Vidot could play Origin this if year if he changes his allegiance to Australia. I'm not sure if he did that and then switched back to Samoa. However, if he hasn't, he can switch again but he won't be able to switch back to Samoa until the next World Cup.

Pretty much, you can switch nations when a World Cup comes along and after the World Cup you can only switch once until the next World Cup.

Vidot can still play Origin.

I could be wrong.

Kind of, but he can't change back (to Samoa) until AFTER the next World Cup. Ie, they can only change once between each WC.

Boyd needs to go. He is in horrible form and just looks uninterested. Dunno if anyone else noticed, but against the cowboys he literally turned and ran away from a bomb because Gavin cooper jumped for it. He is purely there based on reputation. Vidot to take his spot.

Would also love to see inglis play fullback but sadly, it will never happen while slater is fit. Slater is in career worst form atm, its a worry

Agree with all of that

My concern with Vidot is that it may be too much too soon.

He's in very good form, but there's still some deficiencies in his game that at Origin level will most certainly be exploited. Boyd for all his issues with application has been there before & can handle the pressure situations. I don't think fans give him enough credit for the play he came up with in Origin 3 where he linked up with Slater and made a good 40m. It reversed the tide of the match, denying NSW one last shot when they looked close to gaining the upperhand.
