And that came at a huge cost for the game, some of which I suspect is being reflected in selling out and now money being tighter than it should be for these things to happen.

Abdo said the NRL was not in a position to fund an expanded Queensland competition as it continues to assess pathways.

“We’ve been working on a national view for development of pathways, including the second-tier competitions,” he said.

“It’s important the Commission takes a broader view on development. We have the rest of the country, New Zealand and the Pacific as well.

“We’re working with our members on what the right development model is for them and many are seeking a vertically integrated model.

“The QRL provided us a proposal on June 13 with a deadline of June 30 saying they will accommodate two extra teams if the Commission invests another $4.2 million into the Queensland Cup competition. We were given two weeks to respond, with a number of restrictive conditions and a significant funding increase.

“We are very supportive of clubs choosing the right model for development and are prepared to invest in making that happen.

“We are not yet in a position to consider an investment of the size proposed in an ultimatum style proposal in a two-week period.”

Andrew Abdo fails to dodge

“I am having regular conversations with the QRL, NSWRL and all 17 NRL clubs about options and what their plans are.

“Have I had conversations with the QRL and NSWRL about second tier competitions and their view on expansion and clubs? Absolutely.”

Ben Ikin fires his second barrel

“In the case of the Burleigh Bears, they saw the direction the Titans were heading and decided to link with an NRL club that believes in the role state league clubs play in the development pathway in Queensland,” he said.

“Unfortunately, it seems that Andrew Abdo continues to push for some version of national reserve grade, which is just another way to pork barrel NRL clubs by giving them more money and greater control of the supply chain.

“Not forgetting that Peter V’landys is on the public record saying he wants to bring back national reserve grade and he’ll run over anyone that stands in his way.

“The QRL will fight with everything we’ve got to protect our statewide competitions and clubs, and we’ll stand against any decision that negatively impacts on our rugby league communities across Queensland.

“We’ve got clubs, competitions and pathways that run from PNG all the way down the eastern seaboard into the Tweed that create more opportunity for more people in more places.

“We get unbelievable backing from the Queensland Premiers’ office, all the way through to local businesses across the state, who invest upwards of ten million dollars to support the work our state league clubs do in their communities.

“My advice to Andrew Abdo on our competition is – don’t mess with it, invest in it.”

Delicious. Hook this shit to my veins. NRL is such a joke of an organisation now, and if it weren't so established already it would probably see a split between QRL and NSWRL, and THEN origin would be sooo good, because then it would be sink or swim in NSW and we would really find out whether there is game management going on.
 
Burleigh beat PNG 30-22. The Bears were in control for most of the match, then the Hunters came home with wet sails and looked like they were gonna ice it, too. Burleigh held them out and scored a pearler at the death. Guy Hamilton was sublime for them, what a player

Great to see the Broncos feeder club doing so well. I'm so happy we've got an official foot back in the Gold Coast region door.

I just love that we proactively got in there though, makes it seem the loss of Norths might been more calculated than it looked at the time...or it wasn't and we just took an advantage when we saw it with Burleigh. Either way, it is a great result for us.

34-22 after being up 34-0 isn't great and it could have been closer, Coast had a pretty damn certain intercept try called back for off-side but they wouldn't have caught him and always close to onside.
 
Madden try- on the back of a Willison play the ball attacks at 45 degrees, slight dummy straight through. 95% Willison.

Willison, strange, he took the ball 15m out and charged in but Pride seemed to jump off him like they thought he was held or had a call for a strip but Willison just kept going and scores.

Madden- steps through some terrible goal line defence on the right.

Mariner- step step step and reach out.

Geez what's going on with Madden? Are Wynnum making him look better than he is or has he stepped up his game?

You can really tell the people running the NRL aren’t Rugby League people because only a fool would underestimate Queensland parochialism and tribalism when it comes to shit like this.

They’ve grossly underestimated the QRL here and in Ikin in particular it appears they’ve run into someone much smarter than them and it’s starting to show.

Do you reckon they're trying to protect their $4mill investment? (Should they invest). Not rooting for them. After what they've done to the players (and the game itself) they can get stuffed

He's not too different to what he was at Norths. I do think Head will be good for him though.
