Q-CUP Queensland Cup 2023

You can really tell the people running the NRL aren’t Rugby League people because only a fool would underestimate Queensland parochialism and tribalism when it comes to shit like this.

They’ve grossly underestimated the QRL here and in Ikin in particular it appears they’ve run into someone much smarter than them and it’s starting to show.

I don't really understand what's going on? All I have heard on here for years is NRL should run the game, QRL are poorly run and should have no say- Cup be dead no place in the game.

NRL say it everyone agrees that's what we need but do it and everyone says how rude do not touch my beloved local football.

Sounds vaguely familiar Wayne......

“We cannot mess with the Queensland Cup which is the best second-tier competition in the world,” Bennett said.

“It was too expensive to run an NRL reserve grade 30 years ago, can you imagine the cost of doing it in this day and age?

“I have been coaching since 1977. Ron McAuliffe started the state league competition in the 1970s and that’s how much longevity has gone into our game in Queensland and the game in this state has never been in a healthier position.

“There is no code in this country that would not love to have what we’ve got with the Queensland Cup. I’ve looked at all sorts of models and nothing is as effective as the structure we have now.

“I coached in NSW for nine years with the Dragons and Newcastle and they don’t match what we do. They are nowhere near what we do in Queensland in terms of game development and pathways.

“The Queensland Cup has a team in Papua New Guinea all the way down to Toowoomba (and Tweed Heads).

“We don’t need an NRL reserve grade. It’s nonsense. It’s another expense we don’t need and it won’t make our competition any better.

“I personally do not want to see the Queensland Cup affected in any way, it’s underpinned the success of the game and the expansion with the Dolphins coming into the NRL.”

Willison was excellent last night; I think the danger for him is to not be pushed to work harder.

He doesn't need to do 18 hit ups a game. He is finding a real impact with less. In 46 minutes, last night he only hit up eight times but every single one had great impact.

Scored a try, got a quick play the ball for Madden and wasn't tacked first time once.

The Dolphins kicking game has troubled Tweed the entire afternoon. All three tries have come off the back of kicks, with young Steelers SG Ball recruit James Walsh scoring in just his second game of QCup.

Dolphins lead 18-6.

Seagulls hit back off the back of the penalty. Tweed moved the ball well in the opposition red-zone, with Lindon McGrady getting the Seagulls on the front foot. Tweed turn it back into the middle and Purcell with the momentum, drives his legs and the Dolphins couldn't stop him.

I find Tweed really frustrating; they seem to be where Norths were a couple of years ago- well coached, young and play good football but just don't put it together enough.

Jesse Yallop for the Blackhawks Colts- three tries, 313m.

Beni Allen for Wynnum Colts- two tries in the first three minutes- He's a Bronco.

My ideal would be a National 2nd tier but using existing clubs from Qcup and NSWcup(though they have to ditch the inhouse nonsense), link it to both comps with a promotion and relegation and make it professional.

The National reserve league on the other hand would kill the ecosystem of lower league Footy clubs imo, and hurt the game overall.

Paix off after 30- he had one crack at the line, but Souths attack is stalled badly- very undermanned.

Hunt will be happy with two points and get out of there to the two weeks off.

Paix 57 minutes but didn't do anything bar defend. That won't be enough to get his spot back.

Paix ran 12 times, I wouldn't have thought it was that much; 29 tackles. That's much better than I probably thought.

I wonder how long that groin was a problem before he actioned it because he certainly looked a bit zippier and attacking last night and moving better. His runs didn't have much impact, I didn't even notice them but at least he was running.

That was a hard attacking game for Souths, without Mozer, Sailor and Te Kura they lost a bit but found a way. Three tries against the team coming second last shows how much of a struggle it was.
