JACK Reed was the first player to wear a 2016 Broncos' NRL Auckland Nines jersey in public today and it hit home he is going to miss the tournament again.

Reed is once again recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and will not be ready to go in February.
He is on track to play in the early rounds of the competition next year.

But it won't be the Auckland Nines, something he is desperate to do.

“You never know your luck in a raffle, but I hope so,” he said of possibly playing in the colourful event in 2017.

"It's an excellent concept - 90,000 buzzing fans over two days.

"You think of Anthony Milford, Ben Hunt and Kodi Nikorima, players who can set the stage alight.

"It also gives the big boys an opportunity - I think even Corey Parker is throwing his hand up for it this year.

"You love the fact that there is so much colour behind it - they get there in fancy dress and have a good time.

"And it's 16 clubs in one place for two days, so you get to see some stars.

"I am a bit filthy that I have missed a few of these now - it's exciting because you are building towards your season."

While Reed modelled the jersey alongside the other 15 clubs in Sydney today with players like Billy Slater, John Sutton and Greg Bird, his rehabilitation is still the major concern.

The 26-year-old has spent more time on a bike racking up kilometres than most, with on-field training and contact out of the question.

But once again his recovery is well on track, something he has plenty of experience with.

"Everything is going brilliantly and I have been looking after myself," he said.

"It's always hard doing it by yourself, but I have been sitting on that bike clearing my head.

"It is tough and unfortunately this is not my first one.

"But I have had enough of them now to know what I have to do to get myself right.

"Obviously I don't want to find myself back in this situation again.

"So it is all about taking the time, doing things right, and doing them over and over again."

And while others might play the victim about going through this again, this former tradesman prefers to look on the bright side.

"I must have done too many years on the tools when I was a renderer - that's what I keep telling everyone," he quipped.

"I've been unlucky with it, but then again I am lucky I have never missed much game time with it.

"It has always been an off-season surgery."
