What we wouldn't give to still have Khunt chiming in to ease the play making pressures.
Hunt had the same amount of playmaking ability as Wallace. none, that is. he could execute his part in our one pet play very well, but so can any number of other players (as was evident when we scored off it pretty much every other game the season after Hunt left). Hunt as a playmaker was shown up with his absolutely woeful state of origin appearance at 5/8th. i honestly dont know where people got the idea that he was a playmaker from. he had a good grubber kick on him, and could draw and pass, but thats about it.

quite frankly im very worried about us in 2012 and beyond. Wallace couldnt be the chief playmaker in a team to save his life. we'd get beaten xx-0 every single game unless we got a breakaway try from one of our back, cause wallace certainly cant put anyone over the line. Hunt just isnt impressing, and we have noone else. Norman was our next big thing but hes pretty much dropped off the face of the earth atm.

we need to buy a good halfback. through the chequebook at Thurston if he is off contract next year, or throw it at Mitchell Pearce whenever he is. that guy has star halfback written all over him.

Trolling is that only reason you could justify that... Like it or lump it Hunt was more new age than classical fullback. He was a 2nd 5/8. I've no doubt you'll be the only person to dispute that. Why did WB play him at 7? Actually, don't answer that. [eusa_doh

My point wasn't pro Hunt, it was highlighting that overcoming Lockyer will be even more difficult given we don't have a fullback capable of easing the pressure on the halves.

It can't be done.

But, we can go close. What do we do?

Trust our younger guys like Ben Hunt and Corey Norman, or look outside the club for someone who's proven their ability in the NRL?

Souths struggled to get GI under the cap. With the wages Quade Cooper will want I don't see him going there.

I may be wrong (most likely am), but I thought that defecting RU players are excluded from the Salary Cap for the first couple of years. I'm sure I heard something along those lines.

we need to look outside the club, because at this state we seriously need to get 2 new quality halves for 2012.

Wallace has had his chance - 4 years of chances actually - and just isnt up to it. Hunt, maybe, but i dont wanna bet the house on him only for him to be Wallace mkII.

I think if there's a good established player out there that we can afford to get, we should pursue it.

As much as I love our trust in youth, and as much as I rate Hunt, he isn't proven yet and I think we need an insurance policy.

Quade Cooper? Great. I think we have bucklies chances.
Johnathon Thurston? Makes me cringe a little because he's very "Johns like" in that the team either lives or dies by him. Plus he'd be astronomically expensive.

What's Alfie doing these days....

IIRC, it's only Union players under 20 or under 21 though.

Agree with Coxy - our current youth, with as much potential as they have, aren't quite there just yet. So if we can get value for money looking outside the club I'd support it. If no-one that's going to be true value for money then I say we continue to work with and develop our youngsters. Then again unlike a lot of people I have the patience to want us to develop long term success not expecting instant success and premierships every year.

As for Thurston I'd say no. There's no doubting his on-field brillianc but he is too "high maintenance" off-field and in our current state I really think that's the last thing we need to be trying to manage.

Re: Darren Lockyer Retirement plans?

Not going to get dragged into a Hunt debate but his exectution of the second man play was the best I have seen from any fullback. He always ran the right lines and picked the right option when it came to either passing, running or grubbering.

And the proof was in the pudding, the second man play was very successful and how we scored the majority of our points.

Hoffman has a different style, he's more of a runner and support player and we still haven't quite adapted our attack to suit his game.

The problem runs deeper then just Lockyer, last thing I want to do is get some one like Thurston in(not saying we shouldnt chase him just saying we need to have someone suitable to be with him in the halves) and have a situation where his expected to solely carry the side in the playmaking duties like Lockyer had been for so long.

Wallace either needs to lift his game by mid season or its time for Hunt to step up(I think people are being harsh on him, I don't really think his had his opportunity in the halves to show his potential and perhaps being on the bench was a result of that). I will say this and perhaps I was blinded too much in thinking Lockyer would be there next year but I think its best for now we stick with Wallace at halfback and play Hunt in the Queensland Cup. I've changed my view largely now because with Lockyer's announcement and others have questioned is there any real benefit in playing him there when he could be playing 80 minutes in the halves even if it was a lower grade. Sometimes I'm guilty of stubborness but here I'm willing to conceed something needs to be done.

Losing Locky is the biggest change in the team in over a decade. Whether we buy a superstar or not, we're in for a few lean years.
I, personally, would go with a Hunt/Norman or Wallace/Norman halves pairing, and just grit our teeth and bear the pain that's going to come early, when the lack of a veteran leader is apparent. I honestly believe that if the Broncos just give Corey Norman plenty of game time and patience, he will develop into a superstar. He's shown enough for me to say that when he irons out the bugs in his game he will be a gamebreaker. But we can't expect him to be one of the best pivots in the game in his first full season, so as hard as it is, the Broncos may have to lower their expectations for a few years.
The next few years will be a period of rebuilding. Rather than approach it like NSW and panic after each bad result, the Broncos should follow the QLD blueprint of picking the key players and sticking with them until they become the players we need.

I reckon we need to get Hunt in the 7 now, he needs to be ready to control this side next season. He and Macca work well together and could create a superb partnership. Wallace is thick as pig shit and needs to go IMO. If our 1,7 and 9 are all working together and quality players the 6 doesn't matter as much. Would be great to buy a quality 6 though

The Broncos should look for a running style 5/8th and let Wallace steer the team around.
Wallace played his best footy when Lockyer was out.
