THE Sydney Roosters are bracing for a police investigation into an alleged betting scam surrounding the rugby league club's last home game of the season.

A bitter split has emerged at the eastern suburbs club over the circumstances of the round 26 game between the Roosters and the North Queensland Cowboys at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Bookmakers suspended betting three times before the game after a splurge of bets backed the Cowboys to win by more than 13 points. Extraordinarily, there was little interest in a straight Cowboys win.

The Herald is aware of one punter who outlaid $1500 after hearing, through Roosters associates, that a 13-point-plus loss was ''a sure thing''. He cashed in after the Roosters surrendered a 16-0 half-time lead to lose 32-16.

In the weeks since the September 6 game, players have been pointing fingers at each other and ostracising some teammates.

They are furious that a small group of Roosters ''celebrated'' the loss by visiting a brothel and enjoying the free services of prostitutes.

One player openly accused a teammate of getting some kind of kickback. ''I'm aware that several of the players have been up there [to the brothel] on a weekly basis throughout the year.

''On occasions they are receiving free services. I don't know why or how that works. Why you would want to involve yourself in those types of circles when you are a professional sportsman, I do not know.''

The player told the Herald he was stunned by claims within the club that results were being manipulated. But on reflection, he noted there was one player ''who would do it'', adding several others were young and impressionable. ''Now, looking back, I can't say that it didn't happen.''

if this turns out to be true, then the Roosters are a disgrace to rugby league and professional sport in general. IMO, if it is truw and the Roosters did fix the match the should be kicked out of the comp... there are no excuses for that. [icon_non

Pfft. The NRL don't have the balls to do anything about it.

Wow if the match fixing is true then the player/s involved should definitely have their contracts torn up and marked NEVER TO PLAY AGAIN. Not sure about the whole club being kicked out of the comp - would depend who and how many players knew and were involved and also if any club officials knew and/or were involved.

Just cancel the license for the Club and all of the other 15 teams will be much happier places?

If they did kick the club out of the comp, I think any players who were deemed not be have been involved should be able to picked up by another club and be exempt from Salary Cap for the next season.

but their props are shit

I can't think of a single Rooster I would take looking at their squad.

I can't really see how it is match fixing if the Roosters lose the game...

They threw the game for financial rewards.

Hope it turns out to be true so they can either be hit with a million dollar fine which will send them bankrupt or just straight kicked from the comp :)

Myles - he's the sh!t

But really - how absolutely unbelievable and horrible to think this happens in our game
If this is true the club should be removed from the competition, players disbanded and those involved given the Hansie Conje treatment (death) and the others being banner for at least a year for not coming out about it right away

Absolutely disgusting - but it will be swept under the rug - if this was true, this could be the end of the NRL

LOL end of the NRL. Bullshit.

Why?

It would happen in every sport.

Probably happens in the NRL each week, but the Roosters may have gotten caught.

With the ongoing problems that the NRL has had with image in this season if it is conclusively proven that there is match fixing at the NRL what credibility will the game have left, who would watch it? The Roosters are one of the few financially viable clubs in NSW and if they go down, crowd support will reach dire situations in NSW

The end may have been a bit over the top - but that is something that the game will take so long to recover, if at all - remember that South Africa is still a bit of a joke in cricketing terms - can you all imagine the Sydney Media if this hits [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee [icon_ee

What do you mean by a financial viable club?

I can't post a link but I remember reading an article where it talked about the financial positions of the different clubs - leading the way was Brisbane, Roosters - and someone else - these were the clubs who were doing really well financially, as opposed to say Cronulla or even Melbourne who struggle - thats what I mean

Uh don't know about that. Pretty sure the Roosters weren't going that flash hot at all.

Only the Broncos and Bulldogs were classed as "safe" with most other teams struggling.

No, the roosters were definitely one of the few financially strong teams (this was due to being the Sydney City team) - though, as I said I can't quote an article - I can't be sure of the Bulldogs though - considering they got the spoon last year, has Camp Quality as a major jersey sponsor, who I don't think would pay heaps and spent the majority of the season without a front jersey sponsor until Jaycar jumped on the old bandwagon towards the end of the year

Bulldogs are financially very strong actually, just behind the Bulldogs. The roosters are far from that.
