Thoughts on making Tesi Niu into a bench utility..

He's an average defensive fullback.. but he's an absolute weapon in attack.

He's scored two tries from dummy half in recent games and has shown game breaking ability going for scoots off a quick play the ball.

Ala Kodi Nikorima 2015, I believe Tesi Niu could be our x factor next year if he's happy to play off the bench. Also can then cover any position in the back 5 if needed.. and if we have an injury in the halves, Walsh can shift there with Tesi moving to fullback.

For sure, I think he should be trialled there, along with Billy, Tyson, Cory, Blake, Te Maire and maybe even Tyrone if he's kicking on. Tesi's on our books, so we shouldn't waste him. But you still can't hide his half-arsed efforts in defence on the bench.

At a pinch, I reckon you might even be able to squeeze a utility out of Jordan Pereira.

I imagine Tyson might leave for a better deal elsewhere as he's a quality half. He's a competitor. One of these struggling clubs should pick up a player who can't be beaten..

But I'm happy to keep him since he's a quality second fiddle halfback or 5/8.

Des somehow turned Dylan Walker into a lock so cant rule anything out.

Dylan Walker: 181cm 98kg
Tesi Niu: 177cm 94kg

Niu can't be trusted, that's the problem. He can break a game open... for either team. You just know he's good for at least one bone head play or a concentration lapse.

Would rather gamble.

Not the worst idea but then you have to wonder if he’s better at that role than Walters/Paix, or Gamble.

If Gamble could be fashioned into a dummy half, that would solve a shitload of problems. But it would be at the expense of Billy Walters.

Gamble on the bench is playing Lock and Half cover if injuries, he isn't playing dummy half.

From What I've seen Niu would make a really good attacking bench hooker option, the question would be his defence, to be fair though defence at hooker is easier in terms of tackle difficulty but the work load is significantly higher, when he played Centre that's the position with the hardest tackle difficulty similar to fullback as you are more likely to not have backup and be outnumbered on tackles then being in the middle.

If he can handle that, he could be more explosive then Damian Cook, Nius acceleration from a stop is one of the fastest in the game and he has good footwork, his short height(short legs means more acceleration thats the main reason why you don't see tall hookers) and bulky frame is an ideal body for the position.

I could understand it if they were going to get a kick start on next year.

but they've moved CHT there, who won't be there in 2023 and AFAIK, hasn't played a great deal of fullback.

If I was any club outside the 8, I would be getting Gamble on my books and into the 17. He's too good not to be in a top 17.
