POST GAME [Round 1, 2025] Broncos vs Roosters

That wasn't a win that was a STATEMENT!

Payne Haas was always one of the best props in the world ... but he's tapped into the form that Madge brought out in him during last years origin series ... this version of Haas is unstoppable, watch out NRL.

I know Paix said nothing has changed with him ... but that's simply not true. the form he showed in the trials and again tonight is literally the best he has ever played, by a very big margin.

The Carrigan, Haas, Hethrington starting middle is so fucking good. just puts us on the front foot straight away.

Reynolds and Hunt may be old ... but they controlled the game so well and didn't over play their hands. they're both footy players rather than just simply athlete's.
Totally agree, we are now a team that no longer relies on Reece to win us the game. The question from the media to opposition coaches and players was always the same "how do you stop Reece Walsh", that is now how do you stop the Broncos!

Never kept counting my posts here but this is my 1000th post.

My thoughts on R1:
  1. From the get-go, it’s evident that every one of our boys turned up for this season. That should pump us all fanatics.
  2. I said during the Live Chat that all our first 3 tries are from folks who are not mainstays in our 17 last year. That is awesome and only will make MM trust in them more.
  3. Our middles especially have steamrolled the Rotters. Payne finally decided to go 1 level up and it is a feast to watch him play at that level. Pure mongrel and get out of my way attitude.
  4. Throughout last year, I kind of wondered what had happened to Riki and his regression from 23. But boy, I’m very much impressed by him. I wouldn’t say he overshadowed the nutcase in Angus, but he totally kept him under control. Reckon he made some good meters too.
  5. Goski & Riki looks like our backrow pairing. It’s upon them to lose their spot.
  6. Don’t know what to say about Piakura. Is he unlucky or dumb enough to be binned? He may be at risk of not being in the 17 next week. If everyone’s healthy and MM instills some confidence by opting for same 17, perhaps Piakura can atone his R1 performance.
  7. Don’t want to investigate too much, but I reckon our bench needs to be better. No errors and don’t kill off the momentum should be paramount them.
  8. Our half’s – dear oh dear! What a pairing we have, and it will only get crazier when Mam’s cleared to return. Adam & Hunt are exemplary.
  9. Whether it’s the slippery field or Walshy too developing his game – he looked a different player to last year. I would say he’s totally unfazed by his mistakes and that is his brilliance. His attempt to grubber kick is a failure yet in the very next play, he strips the ball of Rotter’s player. That is so good to watch.
  10. It’s such a pleasure to watch Cobbo play with a smile on his face. He’s 100% in when he has a smile.
Towards the last 20min, when Cobbo was getting the ball from our end, he was gangtackled and the ball came loose. In Fox commentary, Brandy did say that it’s not often Cobbo looses the ball like he did unless there’s a big hit on him. There are no replays shown but I believe there should be a malicious play on him. Typical Rotters either cheat the salary cap or play cheat.

On a different note, I’m glad to be a part of this forum. I always get any scoops/news/different views on Bronx here than anywhere else. This is my encyclopedia. To the admins here - you’re doing a fantastic job. Great to be here.

Let’s rebuild our dynasty again!

Piakura in 2mins showed that Madge made the right call and has created a first grader out of Gos... great increase to our depth.

I think Piaks will get there, but now he can see what Gos is doing out there to know where he needs to get to
So are we all thinking that if Madge can’t get the best out of Piakura, he will then need to join Baker on the sun?
The cannon is spit shined ready to go…
What the **** was he doing in his 2 minute cameo?! 🤯

Hopefully it was a combination of first game of the season excitement/nerves, and then having to sit on the bench waiting for 70 minutes. Doesn't excuse the stupidity of what he did, but hopefully it's out of his system now and he settles in to being a weapon off the bench.

I would like to see him brought on a little earlier, but hard to argue with Madge's use of the interchange last night given the result.

Thinking back on the game the one thing that stood out for me that unlike last year when we get in the 20 m zone in attack it looks like we have a plan. Forwards running in pairs at the line to confuse defenders and when the defence sprints up trying to shut down our outside men all the backs seem to know a kick behind the line is on and are ready for it.

That try when Haas offloaded to Paix near the line looked like something that they have practised at training and it's awesome when that stuff comes off. I also can't wait to see Te Kura when he does that cannon ball run close to the try line.

Think Piakura is being a little harshly treated. I can see why he had no idea what had happened. I didn't hear a penalty given the only thing you could hear was a play on call, no whistle for the original offence.
Teddy got to his feet so quickly and tapped the ball, which is very often called back, Piaks only heard the play on call and made the tackle.
I had to rewind to see what happened.

As expected, we scored points rather easily. I particularly liked the short passing from our forwards ..... Haas' ball for Paix to score was amazing !

Our 'D' looked pretty good as well, nice desperation close to our line.

A great start to the season 👏

Yeah it was a harsh send off. Not as harsh/blatant cheating as the Gillo one haha but it was obvious that the NRL wanted it to be a less embarrassing margin. Lots of six agains, a confirmed try with an obvious ass on the sideline.

But the Broncos held together and worked hard as Madge said in the presser. Oh on the presser isn't a dream having a coach that's able to articulate his thoughts. He said all the right things, got behind the boys, encouraged the risks they took because they earned the right to play the footy they did. But stated he was mostly impressed with their efforts in D, he could have pointed out the few stumbles in D but didn't and that was the right call. He has definitely grown as coach.

The halves combo got off to a great start, and they are gonna have all year to fine tune! Same with the Paix/Walters rotation.

Riki ran a lot harder, happy with his game.

Piakura looked awesome before his unfortunate penalty.

I don't think there would be anyone waking up happier than Cory Paix. Would have been a pretty rough 18 months for him.

Feel good story.
True, though any of our 9s would have looked good following our forwards against that opponent last night.
He deserves the reward of getting first crack from a big off-season.
