POST GAME Round 1 - Broncos vs Eels

part of me is just happy that a good handful of us are blaming the refs for a big part of the loss. last year was a different story we just sucked that bad that even with ref help we woulda lost.

if we got the rub of the green like eels im actually confident we win that one.

if boys put in that much effort and get some luck with injuries then we will win more then we lose imo

I still cannot believe that the video ref could definitively say that Mead contacted the ball when he made a play at Brown on 1 viewing of 1 angle
The video refs get far more angles than Fox or Nein show us...

The boys played their ass off amid some bad luck in injuries.
What makes me want to switch off is the officiating.
Deadset, when they denied Turps try, that did me.

Shitty call no doubt. But Broncos always have to overcome that type of thing, even when we are going well. Happened plenty of times in 2015.

Croft should have passed to Turpin, up by six. Ferguson should have been put into touch by three Broncos players, Eels down by six. Shoulda, woulda, coulda - but that's where it's won and lost.

Cant really complain about that no try of turpins. If thats awarded against us everyone is in here whining about it guaranteed.

Tonight I'm disappointed, but not angry and upset like I was every week last year. It was an 8 point loss that felt like a 2 point loss (that final try only came because we were still in a position to win it and we tried something)

They need to take their performance tonight and build on it.

Several things stood out for me tonight:

1. We still have some Seibold era burned into our muscle memory... but it is getting smaller each week. With the adversity of the second half, Parramatta would have put 40 on us, without even breaking a sweat in 2020

2. We need to find a witch doctor to remove the injury curse. They killed us tonight.

3. They showed more resilience tonight than at any time during the Seibold era

4. Kevvie is on the right track but still has some work to do. IMO, we played for about 60mins tonight, which is a step up.

5. PVL is trying to ruin rugby league

6. Adam Gee is trying to take Ashley Klein's title for worst ref in rugby league

7. Not footy related, but even the most gorgeous women become repulsive wearing Parramatta gear, lol

My POTS points would be (from watching at the ground)

3. Milford - I thought he was outstanding tonight for the most part.

2. Mead - really impressed me tonight.

1. Tough one but would go with Croft - thought he was good tonight. Asiata or Coates could have taken it if they didn't get injured

We had our chances. Herbie scores if he takes a straight forward intercept and Croft blowing that great chance.
The new rules will have 1 guaranteed outcome. Every game will look the same.
Yes it will be fast but IMO the game is in danger of becoming generic.

It was more the bunker looking at it once that’s pissing everyone off. No consistency. Some definite tries get reviewed more. In the context of the game, it deserved more looks.

I think if it went up as a try it would’ve been given? Personally I think it was a try but can cop it given it went up as no try

Fucking pea hearts... ref decisions, fitness, bad luck... I don't give a ****. Walter's has to do something totally different at halftime, get them running laps, wrestling in the fucking showers, punching on, I don't give a ****. The excuses wear thin after 12 fucking losses in a row with multiple 2nd half fade outs....over it.

Well time for one of these again:

1. Isaako - He was really good tonight. He wasn't perfect by any means but he tried his butt off and looked threatening and was pretty safe with his hands for the first time in a while. 7
2. Mead - He was just short of excellent. He had a costly drop and then the stupidity that was Parra's second try but I am not going to hold a terrible refereeing decision against him. Him and Herbie were a really threatening side until the Coates injury and he just coming up with big plays all night. Very impressive. 8
3. Farnworrth - Just about the best player on the ground. He was threatening every touch, safe in defense but the one missed intercept cost us a win from the jaws of an undeserved defeat but it wasn't to be unfortunately. 9
4. Niu - There is a lot of promise here with this kid and who knew he had such a good step? He should have passed it but he looked really threatening in attack every touch until it all went to mud when Coates went off. 6
5. Coates - Goodness he looked like he had arrived tonight until that injury. I hope it isn't too serious but I don't know, I am worried there is nerve damage there. He was running really well and defending really well. Man, we just cannot keep a gun winger on the field at the Broncs can we. 7
6. Milford - It was literally a game of two halves for the guy. He was scintillating in that first half but basically average in the second. He once again went missing when his team needed him when the game was on the line. Typical Milf really - 6
7. Croft - I don't get the negativity really. I mean, yeah he bombed a couple of chances but you know what, he was there when the going got tough. He support played, he ran, he threatened and he kicked really well but not backed up by an understandably tired chase. It was by no means perfect but it was really good and unlike his overpaid halves partner, he put his hand up when it got tough. 7
8. Pangai Jr - Impressive performance from the guy. He was a menace and he seems to have grown up. He didn't throw in the stupid stuff and he was a threat all night. Very good. 8
9. Turpin - Well there you go, he has an 80 minute performance in him and he was excellent. On par with Herbie and was a weapon in attack and an axe in defense. The question is, can he back it up game in, game out. He hasn't been able to do it until now but next week will tell. 9
10. Lodge - He ran from the back fence both kick offs and was up for the fight. Unfortunately, his body is not. He is becoming a bit of an injury magnet unfortunately. 3
11. Glenn - He was good tonight, I felt he wound the clock back a bit to be honest and he was impressive. He ran hard and defended well. He isn't a captain but he did his best. I was happy with his performance. 7
12. Riki - Did he play 80? He is extremely fit, agile and strong. Loved when his bicep swallowed Mahoney entirely. He was impressive. Bear in mind, he is still so inexperienced but he is clearly going to turn into a weapon out wide. This kid has something about him...other than the Hulk-like arms. 7
13. Carrigan - Another tireless effort by the guy and hey what do you know, all those ridiculous 80 minute performances last year were helpful given the injuries tonight. He needs to develop an offload though and stop being lazy in the play the ball when defending under fatigue. 6

14. Asiata - He was so good while he was on, very impressive. Kevvie really worked the game plan to his strengths but when he went off, it just became a bridge too far for a team unfairly refereed out of the game. 6
15. Flegler - A typical performance from Tom, some really nice runs, some nice defense, some errors and some stupid penalties. He really needs to become more disciplined because the talent is clearly there but the maturity isn't and on his wage, we need him to be better. 6
16. Bullemor - He has gone up a level on last year. I was not overly impressed with him last year other than his speed but he has improved his tank and workrate. He is still young but it is his jersey to lose now. I am happy we have him tied up because I get the sense he is not far from arriving. I was very impressed in the little I saw of him tonight, there is a gun player in there. 6
17. Teo - You know what, this was a vintage performance from Ben. Amazing what a preseason can do. He was excellent tonight both in attack and defense, in the centres and the second-row. He defended more like the Teo of yesteryear and just did a few nice things in attack. He was very good just quietly. 8

Kevvie - Love ya coach. Thank you for giving us back the Broncos. That will be a tough loss to take no doubt but you learned about your team tonight and you may have just done what The Mandalorian did to the sequel trilogy for us fans. This episode didn't knock it out of the park but it did give us something really, really good to build on. 8

The Ref - Moron, should be sacked, that was bordering on illegal. -10

I don't follow it that closely these day, but I'd be willing to bet that they don't have the same effect that they do in rugby league.

And I'm certainly they don't hand power to the ref (umpire) while removing accountability at the same time

All I wanted was them to put in like a professional team and they did. The injuries killed us and I hate pointing at the refs but it is a joke, the Eels were offside, laying all over the ruck and not a penalty or six again. This six again rule does speed the game up but it also allows total bs to go undetected.

I do think if we didn't end up a 14 man team we would of had the juice to not lose our way. There is a lot to like out there but also some issues, I am not a fan of Isaako's running game, he needs to be fitter and more involved/up tempo.

I swear if there was a for-against metric for luck, we'd be dead last with daylight above us. Cannot catch a break. The injuries (particularly to gamebreakers or players in form in a game or stretch of games), the assy little things that go the opposition's way (their second try), the little things that don't go ours (Herbie's non-intercept, Turpin's non-try)... The fucking refereeing. At some point the law of averages would say it has to turn, doesn't it? But knowing our luck it won't.

Loved the effort tonight. Find it hard to criticise anybody. Milf disappeared a bit in the twenty minutes after half-time but encouragingly got his head back in the game late. Croft wasn't terrible, had some nice touches and showed some promise while making a few costly mistakes. Isaako did nothing too wrong at the back. Mead and Farnworth were solid to really good, Costs was looking great before being cruelled by injury. The forwards mostly stood up. Asiata particularly looked good before he got hurt. Turpin tried hard, but I just don't see that spark from him we need, that was even more evident in contrast with Mahoney. TPJ I thought played within himself, particularly in defence, but you can hardly blame the bloke.

We looked really good on attack in large sections, with a lot more shape and intent than we have shown for years. There were still a few moments where we were attacking inside the twenty and looked a bit disorganised, but it was thankfully the exception rather than the incontrovertible law it has been. Defence was better, but I'd have liked to see more speed off the line, particularly after Parra's forwards started to really get a roll on early in that second half. Part of that may have been injury-related fatigue, of course, but even so it's an area for improvement.

The Kevolution may not have started with the bang I'd hoped for, but I still think there is cause for hope, komrades.

Line speed is still poor, we just don’t seem to have worked out the new rules at all.
