Round 1 Discussion

Hannant still with his mandatory knock on. Something's never change.

Haha, it's his second as well.

One is par the course but whenever he comes up with two you know it's been a bad night at the office.

Clearly Griffin should be blamed for this performance as well.

They should have let that go..

Tupou was in.

No, no. It's pretty much standard from Hannant and has been for years.

I wonder if leaving the Broncos was the worst thing for Hannant.. He did have a good 2009, but he went downhill after that.

I don't mind Hannant, but everytime I see him play, I'm reminded of a poster who was adamant that he was better player than Webcke ever was.

Just reminds me that he never quite lived up to the hype. One great season in 2009 and never quite went on with it.

Lol, I was holding my tongue for the first, but the second was absolute classic Hannant.

I'll tell you what, based on this week's games, Souths Vs Rabbitohs next week should be a hell of a game to watch.

True. Souths are probably the only team that can beat the Rabbitohs. I'm tipping Inglis to have a big impact for both Souths and the rabbitohs

 I've had a couple of stubbies tonight so maybe it's the beer talking but you're the man broncos4life

The Roosters defence is just incredible and they are such a well drilled and coached team. Blake Ferguson looked a bit flat in attack but was strong in defence and will kick on from it. Bit surprised by the score as I thought the Roosters would struggle without Jake Friend but they looked just as effective as they are with him.

So will JT receive a week for his trip?

Keeping in mind that Grub Reynolds only received two weeks for his (with priors).

Probably not he is a protected species just like Billy Slater.

The footy is well and truly back.

I'm beginning to feel it as well. In addition to all the NRL games, I've watched through two NYC games and I've been keeping up with all the other competitions. So much so, I feel like I've gone cross-eyed and a lot of what has transpired has really run together.

The weekend so far in a nut-shell.

The Rabbitohs were clinical as ever against a disappointing Broncos side that never really got going. A good evening by them where all the usual suspects stood out. In addition, I thought the likes of Glenn Stewart and Chris Grevsmuhl showed promise and while I think it's too early to get too carried away, I'm looking forward to seeing whether or not Stewart can add a bit of razzle dazzle to Souths Sydney ball-play which at times was pedestrian in 2014.

The Eels bullied a hapless Sea Eagles who had their worst night in over a decade. I'm struggling to think of a worst night for them and I'm close to putting a red line through them this year as far as finals are concerned. Parra reminded fans that they're more than just a one man club and put in a really good team performance where their forwards laid a great platform for their halves to weave their magic. There was certainly an element of luck to their play and plenty of signs to suggest they're going to be as hot and cold as ever but on that night it worked out for them. Very interested to see how the likes of Peats, Watmough, Moeroa, Mau and De Gois go through the season.

The Knights finished on top of the Warriors in a topsy turvey game. The Knights were as frustrating as ever but they had too much talent for a Warriors side that was caught short in that department. It wasn't all bad news for the Warriors, a lot of their juniors impressed and while they were relied on too much (Vete took way too many hit ups) they showed enough to suggest they could be weapons down the track. Another stand-out for mine was Lolohea at the back and while he didn't have the combination with SJ to create opportunities, I think he did enough good things in his own right to justify another opportunity. In fact, I wonder how long it will take until we see a Lolohea/Johnson halves combination? I can't say Townsend has been all that impressive in his opportunities although in fairness to him, SJ was poor here as well. It's odd, I feel like I could draw more positives out of the Warriors performance than the Knights - I didn't really get to giving the likes of Matulino or Hoffman a rap for their efforts but then maybe I just had low expectations? Gagai was their best but I'm wondering if he's ever going to cut those mistakes out of his game or if they're just going to be something you've got to expect as a fan? Couple of bad choices at times but he's a talent and I'd like him back at the Broncos. Outside of him, I'm going to remember the game for Randell who seemingly had the footy gods on his side and could do little wrong.

Tigers v Titans felt like I was watching two teams fight over the wooden spoon. I really enjoyed watching the Tigers play last season but when they're off, they absolutely stink and unfortunately that was the case tonight against a Titans side that quite franky were lambs to the slaughter. They put on a brave face early and that grubber kick to Roberts felt typical of a team under the pressure they are but it's clear they're low on troops and low on options too. In fairness, I don't think you can blame the loss entirely on the 'replacements' (shout out to my boy ning and his odd taste in Keanu films) as it was really the likes of Myles and James who let the team down at key moments but they've got to tinker with that team particularly in the spine because they never looked threatening against one of the weaker defensive outfits in the competition and I don't think they're going to improve with the crop they're using. I think they'll learn that the hard way and I'm struggling to see where their first win may come from. Their best hope is against the Broncos of all teams...

As for Wests, it's hard to judge them on that performance beyond them being bad. Sometimes when you're a young side and you're told by basically everyone you're going to win you can believe it and just play poorly. It happens and I think that was the case. Still some impressive signs from their backs and the way they were able to set up the field goal was impressive. Still, I'm not going to read too much into them or their personnel until they play the Dragons who are at their level.

Finally we had the Cowboys/Roosters. I've had enough of the Cowboys. Every year I get caught up in thinking they've turned a corner an they're going to be better than ever and I still think they'll go onto have a good year but they never play well at Townsville in Round 1. At least not well enough to beat the Roosters who were something else on the evening. Any hint of complacency was completely quashed and like I said, they didn't produce too many halves last year as they did in the first half. Some of the tries they scored were damn near impossible to defend and I got the feeling they would have smoked a lot of teams tonight, ours included. The only thing that sucks about them is their discipline. I don't know what it is about them, but the penalty count was ridiculous and against the likes of Souths, Penrith and Canterbury they'll be punished. The question is, how good will they be with Jake Friend in the side? It's scary, still a lot of upside about them and I look forward to see how they progress through out the season.

I don't think the Cowboys were that bad but they'll have to make some changes if they want to improve. Wouldn't be surprised to see the back of O'Neil and I think at some point they'll have to bite the bullet with Moga as their 3/4s don't pose enough of a threat against the better teams. Their forward pack looks good on paper but a few of them seemed to be coasting on reputation and need to turn it around in a hurry as there are plenty of alternatives. I reckon the Knights are in for a world of hurt and if there is one player who is going to help turn things around it's going to be Jake Granville. By the time he came on, the game was basically lost and whatever chance they had of a comeback was squashed when Morgan bombed an opportunity. I didn't think he did much of anything wrong and if there is one player who is going to step up and make a difference it will be him.

The Roosters always finish on the wrong end of the penalty count. The thing is that they're deliberate - they concede a penalty the moment they feel stretched, and will regroup immediately. Because they put so much emphasis on this "we'll decide when & where you can attack" it gives them the opportunity to hide any potential weaknesses (eg Maloney, who I still can't believe doesn't get exposed).

And because they build that defensive foundation, it means they can throw the ball around a bit more and risk a few errors, knowing that they'll once again back themself in defence and go again next set.

Tigers vs Titans game was a cripple fight. Titans tried hard but Tigers just got the job done. I can't believe how poorly the Cowboys played. Roosters look very sharp.
