Round 1 Discussion

That's quick thinking by Moylan. That's a massive two minutes for the Dragons.

How is that a knock on from Bird. It touched his elbow but how can anyone be certain enough to overrule the ref and say it was knocked on.

This isn't surprising unfortunately, last night there was a textbook knock on, called as such, challenged and the video ref overturned it.

That the other thing about Vlandys decision to limit scrums ... you don't get to see skillful and beautifully executed set play like the last Sharks try, nearly enough

The presser everyone is talking about if you haven't seen it already:

In the end it wasn't the most convincing win for Cronulla but when the game was in the balance they produced some wonderful attack to ice it. That set play for the Kennedy try was executed to perfection and was fantastic to see.

St George can feel a little hard done by on the Cody Ramsey no try. So often those are ruled a loose carry and allowed to play on but no such luck tonight. Unfortunately for them, it proved to be a 12 point swing against them. That was a tough call but they'll also rue their handling deep inside their own half when it was a two point ball game. Paul Vaughan had a tremendous game but he came up with a costly error right as the Dragons were getting over the top of the Sharks.

For Cronulla I thought towards the end of the game Chad Townsend came up with some great touches. It was his play down the short side and the mid-field bomb that led to the Mulitalo try that was pivotal and he got the Sharks across the field nicely. I thought the Cronulla pack physically got over the top of their opposition with Rudolf and Tolman in particular having strong games.

Ultimately Cronulla walk away with the two points after another clinical performance. They may not have as high a ceiling as other teams in the competition but they'll rarely give you an easy game. St George will welcome back Corey Norman but it's going to be a long season ahead for them. A couple of players can hold their heads up high but otherwise it appears they'll have a long season ahead of them.

I'm still holding out hope that this round was a learning experience for the competition. Even by Round 1 standards, I thought the standard was pretty poor and none of the contests made for great viewing. I miss watching teams going set for set against one another, it's just one way traffic and when the other team gets their 'turn' they're too exhausted to do anything.

I don't think the officials are blowing enough set restarts either, the better teams are the ones that bend the rules the most. We saw again this afternoon with the Raiders who stood offside the entire game knowing they could risk it.

My fear is that it will end up like last year where the only hint of a surprise was how overly-predictible it was. I want to see a team like Wests Tigers 2000 or North Queensland 2006 where they look dominant early but the competition lifts around them and suddenly the wins aren't coming so easily anymore.

I fear for the competition if it ends up like 2020.

They won't learn anything. They have already come out and said how great it was and 'the statistics' support it and the media are just backing them up.

it's clear as day that Peter Vlandys is a plant by the NRL's enemies to destroy the game from the inside
