POST GAME Round 1 - Dragons vs Broncos

The most annoying thing out of that shit is that it looks like we are in for more of the same from the last two years: no structure to what we do.

I haven't commented on this too much, and I know it's only the first round (potential/probable season derailing injuries aside) - but this is starting to look like a Wayne problem to me.

He is not getting what we need out of the team, as a whole, or the individuals. I'm obviously not giving up on the team or the year, but like I said a few weeks ago, I have a funny feeling about this year, and it's not good.
Where’s the line speed in defence? One out all the time. Out the back backline moves as our only plays. If we could just fix our line speed in defence (non-existent) the last 11 years, I would be as happy as Larry.

We looked like the 2017 Bulldogs. Gross!

Think we need a hooker who can bring the forwards onto the ball and get the halves the ball cleanly when they need it. Macca will be OK once he's fit but I don't think he's the long term answer, Geeze if only we could have kept Hunt to play 9....or Granville!

I bloody love Tevita though.

I think last night shows Wayne has fucked us in the spine concerning the halves , we needed a Halfback NOT Bird and he chose the wrong one
Could be doing a Newcastle on us

Pullin' a Newy.

It worked in 2015, it ain't going to work this year. We simply can't keep letting them make territory as part of some sort of scheme, it's ridiculous. Our attacking sets are such a waste as a result.

For people saying it's only round one and what not, drop that performance last night into a lot of '16-'17, you don't notice a whole lot of difference - losing games for the same reasons, same people.

For next week, we'll lift, usually do for the Cows. Do we want the Cows to get slaughtered and want to make up for it next week or win/lose without being great?

(Obviously destroying the Sharks wouldn't be ideal for us).

Based on recent performances, including before his injury, there is just no way Boyd has 4 seasons left in him in any position, let alone fullback. As an example, a couple of times last night he was no where to be seen coming across in cover on our try line. If that’s because he isn’t fit, don’t play him - it’s only round 1 after all.

Moving forward, my bigger concern is that his body MAY hold up, but his mind just doesn’t seem to be in it. I don’t doubt for one second that he loves the Broncos, but you need more than that from the captain.

I know Bennett doesn’t like it, but maybe we need co-captains to spread the load. We just don’t have any one person that stands out above the rest and sadly, captaincy is having the same effect on Boyd as it did Thaiday.

Matt Gillett is the only other alternative. He leads by example and rarely if ever seems flustered. He is also renowned for pulling off something special when we need it (charge downs or impossible off loads). All traits of a good leader. He's also far more robust than our present captain.

My biggest concern about Boyd is his lack of urgency. He rarely puts his body on the line, gives up on chases, submits in tackles and generally his body language is quite poor. I think all of the above, gives the appearance he is injured all the time, but I think it’s more an attitude thing.

Eating a shit sandwich in the first week is a very distasteful way to start they year. Not much to add. As mentioned earlier, The Broncos just look and play scared and that won't work at any level let alone the NRL. It is going to take one hell of a turn around to not get slaughtered by the Cowboys. Let's hope they have it in them.

Could Boyd move into centre without any disruptions? I know it's dumb but I'd love to see Roberts at the back. If he can catch he would be lethal. Bird is another option at the back but I don't think he will be fit enough when he returns. Kahu is too but he is a really good winger and needs to stay there.

1 Roberts
2 Oates
3 Bird
4 Boyd
5 Kahu

Anyone else find it laughable that there wasn't one penalty on the play balls despite it being a major focus for the whole pre season and a big warning given out about how it was going to be heavily scrutinised at the start of the year. I noticed on multiple occasions from both sides not playing it correctly but no penalties blown. The supposedly crackdown didn't even last a game

Did you also notice how slow our play the ball seemed because most of the time we were making an exaggerated effort to use the foot? It was ridiculous in the 2nd half when the rest of our game slowed down too

Tend to agree with everything you’ve said, unfortunately.

Couldn’t hurt to give it a go.
It would also help the most dangerous ball runner in the game get his hands on the ball more and with time to work.
Imagine any time the defence was slightly sloppy and presented a staggered line on kick chase.
We’d lose Boyd’s best asset in ball playing, but add someone with extreme speed sniffing around our already dangerous ball running halves, which would help free them up a little bit too.
I’d be more than ok with Bennett at least trying it out - what have we got to lose.

I'm calling it now. If the Broncos persist with that halves combination all year, we're gonna miss the 8. Even Tonie Carrol would have been disgusted by that performance.

Correct.

His hamstring is shot duck for a long time thouh. He unfortunately wont be the same player again. He should not have played in the finals last year - it a decision he will regret for a long time

It comes across as a bloke who knows he has to do **** all, and won't be fired. He's been coddled too much, and it's too the point where I feel like it could be Bennett not wanting to upset him.

He shouldn't be the captain. He adds nothing to the team in that regard.

Milford hasn’t looked good since the cowboys game early in the season of 2016.

What are people’s opinions concerning him? What’s his future for us?

I’m happy to give Nikorima some leverage, he’s earning far less than Milford and he’s going to need time to learn his new role.

2015 got us all excited, I’m genuinely concerned Milford is now a failure we will persevere with because the coaching staff won’t act on it. We dealt with Wallace for far too long when it was obvious he wasn’t what we needed.

I liked the forwards, I don’t think Thaiday or Sims have a spot in the side anymore though, the rest are good and will get better each week.

Not to start an argument, but Wallace carried this club, and for a mediocre little ginger like him, he did pretty well I thought. Kodi has zero direction, he can't control the team, which I can live with since he's replacing Hunt, but Milford needs a kick up the ass.
