Round 1 team prediction

Plus from all reports he wasn't as good as the others who played in the centres/wing in trials. Why give a leg up to someone who's not showing as good form just because they have more experience?

Frankly early season is the time to GET experience. Before the teams are red hot. Blood the youngsters now. Don't try and do it mid-late season when teams have their games down pat!

Wait...

Someone saying we need experience in the back line :O. YAY finally its not all about the forwards :P

Michaels 09 was indeed crap yes. However we have seen in 08 what he can do. Its in there somewhere.

Did I hibernate through 2008? At his absolute peak he's a solid centre - nothing more. Thing is, he's rarely at his absolute peak and I'd much rather see some of the exciting talent we have coming through the club given a chance or two as I have no doubt there's plenty of guys who will be class players in the not too distant future and I'd rather they be that at the Broncos than somewhere else.

08 he was on the Wing.... But still his got talent just need it to show again.

I agree that he has talent - just not enough to be anything resembling an elite player in the NRL. He's a guy to bring into the team every now and again when injury and origin make it necessary - nothing more than that.

wtf, when did Michaels ever show anything other than inability and ability to be a liability? he was ordinary right through from 06-08 and then so shit in 09. i once saw him get chased down by craig gower with a 15 metre headstart. no speed, no defense, no finishing ability, the guy sucks.

if he is there round 1, i will be very unhappy

Someone please post the youtube vid of the long range tries in early 2008 in which Michaels was a key part.

He has speed and the ability to hit a hole. To be honest Hodges didn't do that ONCE last season. Not saying Michaels is better than Hodges (LOL), but saying that Michaels has elements to his game that can be useful.

Unfortunately his complete inability to read the play in defence last season counters his ability to hit a gap in attack. He's an absolute liability defensively unless he's shown he's fixed that area of his game and can work better with his winger/inside men.

Its sad that 90% of the forum cant look past 09 anymore.

I remember thinking how bad it was when he went down with his knee injury a couple of years back as I thought at the time that he was a kid going places. However, in retrospect, I think that was probably more wishful thinking on my part because, as Coxy said, the guy is a deadset turnstile in defence. Give him a game or two when we have no other options but round one with a full squad (bar Hodges) to choose from? No thanks.

Think that's more it. I can look past 09 and acknowledge the good stuff Michaels did in 07/08, but none of the reports from trial games indicated Michaels had done much improving since last year. Yet guys like Norman, Beale, Glenn etc got rave reviews.

Who did Beale get good reviews off of?

All I heard was that he was a bigger defensive liability than Michaels.

Tim Smith was named for Easts, so it's unlikely he will be on the bench for round 1. This leads me to believe that Glenn will start off the bench, meaning we will either see Beale or Michaels starting in the centers.

Of the two, and it pains me to say this, I would actually prefer Michaels. I'm still not convinced Beale is a center, and he's a bigger turnstile that Michaels. Let's face it, unless we pick Te'o there the Cowboys will just run Mason/Rapira/Tamou down that side all night.

Henjak expects a number of players to step up, giving the strongest indication yet that 18-year-old Corey Norman has won the race to play fullback against North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.

"I still think there's plenty of strikepower there," he said.

"Izzy's there, Darren Lockyer and Peter Wallace. They're at their best when they create opportunities and read numbers. "(Ben) Te'o has strike power, so does Lagi Setu. Denan Kemp's a good finisher.

"Corey Norman's there (and) he's a smart player."
