Round 1 team prediction

To all the people picking Gillette.. have you seen him play? And, what sort of player is he?

I too know little about this guy - he sounds promising. I'm interested to see him play - I missed the trial games. And where did he come from?

It seems that the fullback spot is a 2-way battle at the moment. So who is ur pick? Norman or Hoffman

To be honest I'd like to see Norman have a crack. Something exciting about him from the reports. But I won't be unhappy if Hoffman gets the gig. He's a quality player.

it seems to be something the broncos seem to do in round 1, and thats give a start to a kid who did well in the trials. From memory Antonio Winterstein, Karmichael Hunt & Leon Bott all made their debuts in round 1 after strong trial form.

I watched him last year and was saying the entire time that we should sign him. So glad that we did. For the first half of the year he was playing 5/8 where he was going ok but then moved to lock where he is more suited. He is quick and has great footwork with good ball playing skills for a lock (but not quite good enough for a 5/8 though). Because of this it gives him a bit of versatility, similar to Alex Glenn, so he can cover centre and 5/8 quite well. To top this off he is also a great defender. Just checked his profile and he is a lot bigger than I thought too. 187cm, 99kg.

Personally I would have Glenn at centre even though I think hes a much better back rower. I would bring Gillett in to play the role that Glenn did last year off the bench. To me it seems like a much safer option as we get 4 forwards on the bench but still have good versatility to cover the halves, hooker and backs if injuries occur. If Locky goes down then I would reshuffle the backline and move Norman to 5/8 (where he played all last year in U20s) or just put Gillett straight to 5/8 where he has played before also. It's obviously not as good as having Smith or Hunt on the bench but we really need the extra forward.

BRONCOS coach Ivan Henjak has given a stunning thumbs-up to his young squad by insisting the club has greater depth in key positions than last year, despite the loss of Karmichael Hunt and Dave Taylor.
But Henjak admitted the new-look side would again go into Friday night's round 1 match against the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium burdened by expectations from fans, sponsors and past players.

The second-year NRL coach said he was still not clear on the make-up of his 17 for the Cowboys match, with bench positions causing him the most headaches.

He said he had made up his mind on the contentious fullback spot vacated by Hunt, but would not divulge his selection.

Youngsters Corey Norman and Josh Hoffman trained there yesterday and it is believed Norman has the edge.

Whatever team takes the field will be in for a torrid time from a Cowboys outfit primed to make up for the disappointments of 2009 when they failed to make the finals.

"The Cowboys probably have under-achieved in their own minds, so they're looking to have a big season," Henjak said. "They have experienced players, so now is as good a time as any. Although we lost some quality players, I feel we have a few positions covered a little bit better than we did last year.

"We're pretty well covered in the outside backs where some young fellas have put their hands up. And certainly the backrow of the scrum presents us with plenty of options."

Henjak said the fact fewer than 10,000 tickets remained for the match illustrated the goodwill of the people of Brisbane towards the club.

"We want to do well for our fans, sponsors and past players," he said. "I mentioned that last year. That was the heavy burden we carried when we went through that bad patch."

All 22 players involved in the final trial against Redcliffe last Saturday trained yesterday, although winger Antonio Winterstein was restricted by a shoulder problem.

Former Parramatta halfback Tim Smith trained with Broncos affiliate Brisbane Easts on Thursday and backed up yesterday for the Broncos.

Smith has been named in Easts squad for the round 1 Queensland Cup match, pending advice from the Broncos.

1. Corey Norman
2. Antonio Winterstein
3. Israel Folau
4. Ben Te'o
5. Denan Kemp
6. Darren Lockyer
7. Peter Wallace
8. Nick Kenny
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Scott Anderson
11. Ashton Sims
12. Sam Thaiday
13. Corey Parker

14. Alex Glenn
15. Josh McGuire

Dunno about the last couple of spots and after not seeing the trials I suppose something like Setu, Lingwoodock and Gillet will probably take them. Sims and Thaiday would spend a bit of time up front also.

I really enjoy the thought of Te'o playing in the centres, if I recall correctly he started to be pretty devastating running wide on the right hand side near the seasons end.
