Round 1 team prediction

He's a point that i think needs to be said (if it hasn't already), one Benefit of having either Ben Hunt or Tim Smith on the bench during the season, is that if we don't we could (on probably will) lose one or both of them before Lockyer retires, and i think that Locky will only go on for at most the next two seasons. if we don't give them a reason to stay then when Lockyer hangs up his boots we will be in BIG BIG trouble. Wallace can't do it on his own.

Yes, and no. The problem is we have Wallace, Lockyer, McCullough, Hunt and Smith...all would play first grade at another club. But as many are saying, you can't have more than 3 of them in the 17 the way the game is played these days.

That means Hunt and/or Smith will only get opportunities when Wallace, Lockyer and/or McCullough are injured/unavailable.

Both are too good to be playing Q Cup all year, and other clubs will see that. Particularly clubs like the Bulldogs who will bid Kimmorley farewell at season's end (most likely), Manly who may struggle to replace Orford, Storm if Finch doesn't go beyond this year, Souths if Sandow doesn't continue to develop, Cronulla...well they have nobody, Warriors are struggling for stability in the halves and have done for years. Even the Titans are less than certain on their five-eighth (Greg Bird, lawlz) and Scott Prince we know is injury prone and not getting any younger.

There's ample opportunity for guys of Smith and Hunt's calibre to find gigs elsewhere in 2011. No matter you say? Well frankly I think it is a matter if Lockyer does retire at the end of this season, or has another injury problem, or Wallace doesn't lift his game.

norman is a 5/8... if smith or hunt are good enough they will take their chances andfrom them force their way into the side... Wallace knows they're there and he will have to perform, if he doesnt they get their shot, if he does we wont need them anyway... its that simple, the best 17 will play and get the contracts...

I would like to see

Lockyer reckons he has 2-3 years left in him. That could well be optimistic. If he's having a horrible year will the Broncos have the courage to "do a Wally" and tap him on the shoulder?

The difference between locky & wally is locky has earned the right to go out on his own terms.... not sure where all this locky retirement talk is coming from, he is one guy you can put your house on being professional, he trains that way and hes still one of the fittest guys at the club... when that changes i have faith in the great mans professionalism to bring down the curtin... still at least 2 seasons off that though imo... maybe more with no rep footy...

Lewis did a lot for the club that should have earnt him to go out on his terms and that wasn't just on the field, the image of professionalism alone in having him at the club set them up for a strong future beyond his playing career and its no surprise he and Gene Miles were the first two players sort after by the club and funnily enough both got the tough treatment by the club, in Lewis your talking about a player who at the time was Mr Rugby League and definitely Mr Queensland and Mr Brisbane, moreso then even Lockyer has ever been and I regard Lockyer highly but even he doesn't have the same profile Lewis had and the sort of backlash the club endured was hardly surprising, I can understand why the Broncos made their decision in terms of on field needs, but if they can make that decision on Lewis they most definitely need to be prepared to make it on Lockyer if that situation occured, otherwise your looking at the once top professional club in the competition weaker minded when it comes to making the tough decisions, not a good sign for the future if that happened.

As for lockyer, being fit and professional hasn't stopped the increased amount of injuries that are increasing in number in recent years due to the body of his age and it will only get worse as he gets on in years especially if he continues to play rep football, all it takes is longterm injuries to creep in the coming seasons and a retirement could be on the cards. This is why the club needs to look at ways that they can maximise Lockyer's effectiveness in coming seasons or if it comes to the crunch, make the tough decision.

Sorry mate but when it comes to "Brisbane" Lewis isnt fit to stand next to Lockyer or even Langer.

Meanwhile, the injury fallout from the All Stars clash could worsen, with young Brisbane winger Jharal Yow Yeh a chance of being out for the first two months of the season with a knee injury.

The Broncos' medical staff face three options for the 20-year-old: leave the injury - a tear in his cartilage - to repair itself; have an arthroscopy, or; surgically stitch the damage. The final option, the most likely due to his age, would rule him out for 12 weeks.

Club officials are likely to make a decision today.

Quite the opposite actually, be it in the Brisbane/Queensland Cup competition where he excelled in for many years and provided a lot of success for a number of clubs he played for or the Broncos who owe a lot of their professional on and off the field success over the years in having Lewis there to lay the foundation for it, he always will be Mr Brisbane at many levels.

sorry let me correct that "When it comes to the Broncos"

Lewis may have started the run. but Locky/Langer and Tallis kept it alive and took it to new levels.

As a Bronco Lewis is over rated.

Yes and no. On the field Lewis had limited impact for the Broncos. But if the Broncos had not signed him I very much doubt the success we achieved in the 90s would've happened. Why? He attracted guys like Miles, Jackson, Backo, Dowling, Conescu etc to the club...they lay the foundation on which Langer, Renouf, Lazarus, Gillmeister, Carne, Hancock, Walters x 2 et al built the winning tradition our club enjoys.

ive never thought of it like that Coxy, but you're are probably right. we may have just been another Crushers/Gold Coast Seagulls

and how many people here would have him in their top 10 broncos?

I don't think you understand Coxy's argument.

Clearly.

Because everytime we've had a "pick your best ever Broncos team" I yell and scream at anyone who picks Lewis over Kevin Walters.

If I was to name the 10 most positively influential people involved with the Broncos, Lewis would be in there.

In fact, I'll do just that in another thread!
