PRE-GAME Round 10 - Tigers vs Broncos

Why not Kennedy instead of Flegler?

Yup, after that effort by Flegler he needs to be sent back to the practice squad. Sloppy in attack and defence.

Kennedy would be serviceable.

Our right edge defence is a mess. How do you fix this? A proper fluid sliding defensive line? The Tigers will tear us to shreds out there if the defence out there isn't fixed this week.

Replace 3 wingers and a half with a 2rf, centre, wing + half.
Oates I anticipate rapid improvement from but Farnworth needs to be taken out of ctr as soon as Staggs is fit. He has no trust in Croft so never slides. I actually like them jamming in because at least we then have a small chance of stopping the play.

I don’t know where all the Herbie hate comes from. I thought in general play his defence was very solid. Seems to not miss many tackles. Yes on our line he tends to shoot up which leaves an overlap and that needs working on.
My side for next week considering suspensions and injuries would be;

1.Niu
2. Coates
3. Boyd
4. Staggs
5. Farnsworth
6. Milford
7. Croft
8. Haas
9. Luke
10. TPJ
11. Oates
12. Hoppa
13. Carrigan

14. turpin
15. Fleglar
16. Teo
17. Bullemore

Backrow looks atrocious at the moment.
I assume Fifita won’t be back and offa is still suspended I think so that’s about all we can go with.

The second try down that side actually highlighted the issue a bit more. In that first try Oates was caught infield... he made a tackle two plays earlier and then hung around marker.

I don't know if the left side of our defence was short and was pulling players over to it, but the right side was completely stripped of numbers and the overlap was there for like 2-3 tackles.

On the second try the inside men came up and then started sliding; however the last 3 came up and stopped (Croft, Herbie, Coates). If they slide like the rest of the line there's no overlap.

They ended up with 2-3 defenders on the decoy, but the inside men had it covered.

I'm not sure if it's Herbie, Croft or Oates that is meant to be communicating out there, but to me the inside men covered the second try well and the poor play from the outside men created an overlap that wasn't even there

My thoughts too. Which comes back to 3 things at least: communication, an organiser, and a decent structure to start with where there is a defensive line where everyone knows what to do as is the case with the top 3 teams. I guess part of the problem is having an 18 year old FB

I see our right edge as a major defensive liability. We leak tries there every week and until it gets fixed we are no chance of winning against half decent sides, and the Tigers are a half decent side. They will target that side constantly.

Having an extra man out wide, usually the FB linking, is a stock play for every side. I watched the highlights of every game. Almost every try out wide is due to poor defensive reads and bad sliding. One would think it's the 1st thing that a side would work on at training. I hope we fix it asap although who will organise the defence on our line remains a big problem.

The way I see it, at least one out of Herbie and Croft has to be dropped, if not both. They both aren't bringing much at all in attack and that defensive side is just terrible and let's in a couple tries most games.

If staggs is back, I'd be dropping Herbie. He doesn't seem to break many tackles or anything and seems to get pushed back a bit. Maybe he will be alright on the wing and as much as isaako had a poor game, I think his kicking game and his effort, which you can never question, makes him a better option on that left wing at the moment. He also did a better job defending out there than when Oates was there.

I'd also be dropping Croft. Dearden needs a crack. Croft hasn't fired a shot in a few weeks and his kicking game is pretty awful.

I see oats dicking around a bit but Herbie coming in on decoys that we’re clearly not getting the ball they were way to flat and pretty covered. I took these screen shots from the replays I wish there was a few seconds earlier just to see numbers.

thing with Croft is; hes a Siebold signing....Dearden isnt....

So id imagine the coach wont appreciate the scrutiny of dropping a guy who cost him a fortune in cafe lattes in Melbournes overpriced cafes...

The fact we won means its a moot point; Dearden needs another injury to even make the bench..

Im telling you, the kids gone.....and I dont blame him....

For me a huge problem is that everyone out wide seems to have eyes only for the ball carrier and the ball, rather than a broader view of what is the actual intent of the move the attack is planning. Observe where our players are looking.

For example in the above, nobody is aware of Foran moving wide. Everyone is focused on where the ball is and decoys, and their position is standing at an angle, facing inside, towards the ball carrier when it is clear the ball will head out wide. By the time Foran gets the ball, it's too late to adjust positions, and still, everyone is now watching Foran with the ball, and ignoring the obvious - where the ball will most likely end up, to the overlap out wide caused by this defensive myopia.

This really needs to get sorted asap.

Isaako’s double is glossing over how shit he was in that game. Our defence isn’t good enough to afford the errors he makes. The right edge defence is down to poor structure in my opinion. The middle and edge have no connection at all. We are trying to play slide defence while keeping the opposition on our inside shoulder, which is completely counterintuitive. I think Herbie will be good on the left wing.

I also think our middle need to work harder on the inside to allow our fringe defenders to slide.

Spot on. Your point about "connection" is the key. We desperately need this addressed, both structure and someone to organise the connection that just has to be made.

The question is who. We are a turnstile out there until it is fixed and in close games, that is where we will lose.

I dont know why everyone keeps putting a team up having Dearden at 7, while Croft is here and ecspecially after a win im not saying i wouldnt like to see it because i really would like to but Dearden wont get put at 7.
