PRE-GAME Round 10 - Tigers vs Broncos

I see oats dicking around a bit but Herbie coming in on decoys that we’re clearly not getting the ball they were way to flat and pretty covered. I took these screen shots from the replays I wish there was a few seconds earlier just to see numbers.View attachment 8682View attachment 8683View attachment 8684View attachment 8685View attachment 8686
For whatever reason the overlap was already there... Haas (5th defender in) is lined up on the post, so we have 4 defenders covering an entire side of the field.

On the other side of the field Flegler through to Issac are spreading off to the left side of the field... it may be Niu that is required to tell his defence to push to the right to cover the overlap, but there should also be key members in the defensive line communicating to the inside men.

Oates and Glenn as the second rowers should know that they’re caught short on their side and call for reinforcements.

Someone in the middle 4 should be communicating about spacing so they’re not bunching up and leaving overlaps... presumably Niu, but maybe someone like Carrigan or Haas who is out there for the majority of the game.

Who is injured that will be back for this game?

Really though fifita and staggs would be back, Fifita doesnt sound like he will now though.

Also should turpin be back?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Seibs saw some statistics that said tries scored on the sidelines are not a big deal because most conversions from there are missed or something, and then trains them to stack the centre of the field to push the scoring opportunities out wide.

The next step in Carrigan's development as captain? It should be on Nui however he is only 18 and needs help to organise the defensive line. Also if people think Croft is an organiser, in defence he isn't. He is part of the problem, not the solution.

You know what, last night made me think, at full strength, this side COULD be decent even this year but it depends on how many more games they drop before the remaining cavalry returns.

Give these guys a chance now to build combinations but that right side needs Dearden even if only because he can defend better than Croft. Staggs is a better attacking centre than Herbie but he is just as bad defensively, so Dearden needs to go there. He will also offer more in attack.

You can’t help but wonder how the score line would’ve looked last night if Staggs, Fifita, Turpin, and Bird were all in the line up.

I agree, niu definitely needed to make up numbers and let the middle know but he’s a rookie so I’ll let it slide as he’s extremely young and considering this shit was happening well before he got into the side.

re: Herbie and the decoys

Isn’t that the point though? To put defenders in two minds about who’s getting the ball. It always looks obvious in hindsight. A flat ball to either of those guys still would’ve probably worked as they were running at holes either side of Croft so Herbie came in to close one off. Of course that left an almost 3-on-1. It’s something that both has to get worked on but will also come with experience, not just with Herbie, but the whole team. But that also means we need to settle on our lineup as much as possible to allow the combinations to form

It’s also just as much the middle sliding ASAP to let the edge continue sliding out and cover their opposites.

Totally agree which is why we need more than one voice organising the defensive line.

Even if an Oates, Croft or Staggs knows they’re outnumbered they should be communicating it.

If they know they’re outnumbered they’d know the attack is coming at them and instead of trying to slide on an overlap they could’ve shot off the line to put pressure on the ball and force them to make tougher passes, potentially causing an error.

Likely they still score but it makes the execution harder on the attack despite there being a massive overlap.

If one of Oates, Croft, Herbie or Coates saw the overlap coming then they needed to let the inside men know and everyone rushing up with the fullback trailing and protecting the kick behind.. spotting it and not telling the inside men is poor communication.

They need to be training these structures non-stop, because defence is our number 1 issue... errors, penalties and 6 agains hurt us because we can’t defend them. If we can defend then we will score enough points to win the game

The chopping and changing of personnel isn’t helping either... injuries and suspensions aren’t helping in that aspect and we are looking at more changes in the coming weeks with Glenn going down, Fifita and Staggs coming back, Herbie more than likely going to left wing... and nonstop calls to bring Dearden in.

The big call to me will be if Fifita returns on the right or left edge... right edge should be his long term plan, but Glenn going down may see an interim approach to put him on the left where he was last year, but that is just delaying the inevitable move over to the right.

I would like to see Oates moved to the left ... rather than TPJ moved to the left or Fifita on the left. Oates has played left side most of his first grade career and would be aware of the communication between Boyd and Milf. Even though he has been on the wing he would know what shape to that edge looks like.

TPJ is a middle... leave him there to focus on his game. Fifita is a right edge forward... get him there to work on combinations with Croft, Staggs and Coates.

These guys aren’t confident enough in their own games to be jumping between positions on the field... sort out your full strength lineup and keep the players in their nominated positions

Yeah Herbie sucks. He's gone for staggs.

Yeah let's write off the guy playing out of position and replace him with the actual centre who makes exactly the same mistakes.

Staggs should play right centre but Farnworth should, at the very least, be given a decent run on the left wing. The coach is the one that sucks. He needs to fix the glaringly obvious, long term, defensive problem that ALL our backs have.

I would play Herbie at left centre and Drop Boyd like we should have done 6 rounds into last season. Herbie may not be setting the world on fire but neither is Boyd. I fail to see how Boyd could offer more than Herb.

I don’t know where all the Herbie hate comes from. I thought in general play his defence was very solid. Seems to not miss many tackles. Yes on our line he tends to shoot up which leaves an overlap and that needs working on.
My side for next week considering suspensions and injuries would be;

1.Niu
2. Coates
3. Boyd
4. Staggs
5. Farnsworth
6. Milford
7. Croft
8. Haas
9. Luke
10. TPJ
11. Oates
12. Hoppa
13. Carrigan

14. turpin
15. Fleglar
16. Teo
17. Bullemore

Backrow looks atrocious at the moment.
I assume Fifita won’t be back and offa is still suspended I think so that’s about all we can go with.
So, still no Kennedy who has been a bit better than Flegler just lately ? I mean Kennedy's last performance was better than Fleglers last night.

I agree with you that we need to build right side combinations, and I think for that reason, Croft is being kept at half, and for mine he should stay there for a while longer. He looks down on confidence. I can't see how dropping him for Dearden is going to solve anything. Dearden has had how many games in NRL?

What's the focus here, building combinations with a half like Croft who has decent 1st grade experience including playing in a grand final or just reacting to some flat performances in a team who is still learning how to play together, and throwing in someone like Dearden who is not ready yet for that role. Croft needs more time as does the whole spine to grow as an integrated unit. As I see it, more chop and change is not the way forward.

Why say Fifita is meant for the right edge when he went so well on the left?
