POST GAME [Round 11, 2022] Broncos vs Knights

I also don't think Oatesy wants to go anywhere else. I'd be happy to give him 300k max but also with some of the veteran's allowance included. So I'd suggest 250k + 100k vet's allowance = 350k. If 50k more is needed, I would be fine with it.

If he was even remotely considering going elsewhere, it would already have been mentioned by his agent (via the media) how he is in career best form, in line for Origin, and has the interest of X number of clubs who are willing to offer him "up to" $700k /yr.

I read somewhere, probably this forum that Oates had told mgt to focus on signing everyone else first, then he would take what was left...or something to that effect.

Basically, he is not going anywhere and wants to ensure the priorities signing happen.

Whether that is true or not, I can't say, but if so, and the fact that his manager is not out there kicking up interest certainly indicates he's not shopping around, then I love him even more.

Maybe we can lowball him and give him a job as Red Hill groundsman when it’s time to hang up the boots.

Not sure about all that but he did tell his manager not to even speak to him about it until July.

Yes sure but it matters from the player's perspective. What I mean is, let's say some club is willing to offer Oates 400k (I don't know if anyone would go that high) but then we say to Corey, look mate we can't match that but what we can do is give you half the vet's cap and a 200k deal, so you would have about a 100k short fall. And look, we can't guarantee anything of course but if you stay with us and be a one club player, there will likely be opportunities for you post-playing.
I could be completely wrong - but with the veterans allowance - I'd imagine that would just come off the clubs total cap at the end of the spreadsheet. I can't imagine Oates or Reynolds payslip having a 'veterans allowance' section on it, they'd just sign for X number of dollars and that's it. The veterans part would get calculated later on at the end of the year (Total Spend - eligible veterans allowance deducted). Aren't players not meant to be privvy to the clubs salary cap situation overall? (At least thats what the Storm would have us believe a few years back anyway)
Is he worth more or less than Herbie right now? I'd have to say more. He is a genuine Origin contender. The club offered Coates, an up and coming Origin winger, $500k. Is he worth that much less than Coates? I'm not sure he is, in current form.

He had an ordinary couple of years, and some really rough luck, especially that infection. But he does look like he's back, though not as fast as he used to be.

I would have difficulty pricing him, simply because I can't get past thinking of him as last year's reject. I think the club should do the same as they've done with Herbie and offer him one year at somewhat less than he's on now, and see if he can maintain his form. Even though I think he's worth more than Herbie, I think we could retain him for less, because of where he's been the last couple of years.
I think we over-vauled Coates big time in offering him $500k and I'm glad he turned us down. There's no way he or Oates is worth paying that much to, even with Oates recent resurgence.

I think the Coates price comparison is fair, but I don't think the Herbie one is because they play different positions, Herbie has lot more good years left in him than Oates does as well (purely basing this on age)

I'd love to see Oates re-signed for 2 years, possibly with a third as a mutual option. He's still young enough to get a few more years out of, but how well will he look going into his 30's? I'd like to be able to look at him then and see how he has progressed/regressed towards the end of the 2-3 years.

If it was a choice between Oates and Herbie in who to invest in long term, I'd go Herbie, purely for his age. He's coming into his own lately and has improved dramatically recently.

Herbie is only being signed for a year so it's irrelevant how many years he has left. Compared to Oates right now, I can't really value him higher. Which, I might add is not a small amount. It's no insult.

With Oates the past years hes been terrible and lucky to be at the club. But hes move me to the 2nd row has ended now since we have great cover for 2nd row. Oates has had a massive climb in form but a drop again may happen, I agree on giving him a year contract. Coates not re-signing was terrific news since we would have no Cobbo. We were offering way overs because we didn't want to lose him but it's good Melbourne were lucky enough to take him off our hands.
Contract year has nothing to do with it. Oates was Broncos top try scorer in 2016, 2nd in 2017 right behind Roberts, 1st in 2018, 1st in 2019 (but the trys were starting to dry up due to the players beside him - he only got 13).
I keep raving about this but we literally stopped getting the ball to him and the whole team became a basket case. Of course his attitude and performance is going to drop. A half decent coach could have identified and fixed this. It took Kevvie over a year but he’s done it and said as much when asked about Oates in press interview. (Roughly said the guys in the middle need to get the ball to him).

I fucking love the.

"Viruses don't affect you under a microscope!"

"The stars in the sky aren't seen through a telescope!"

"You don't drive around town in a satellite"

"You don't have a conversation through a speaker device and wire network"

I could go on...

No. These things assist us to understand and view things or enhance things in ways our brains lie to us about.

We once thought the atom was the smallest thing then we split it and all this other shit fell out.

The game isn't played in slow motion, but physics sometimes have to be observed in that way for our brain to process the information. If in a split second he loses the ball, he loses the ball. It's a knock on or it isn't. If he lands just short of the try line is it a try? Or does he have to hit a white blade of grass instead of green?

We don't in those circumstances say "oh the game isn't played in colours"

Fucking batshit they think that's an ok thing to say

On the Sunday footy show when reviewing our game they spent so much of the time allotted to the game whinging about the TMM bunker call that they never even showed all of our tries.
So much sour sour grapes from those Sydney-centric tossers.

The highlights video of the game left out a Broncos try !!

The media will slow it down , find an angle and a controversy and hammer it .
Then say we need new rule / refs / video replays to get this right there is too much at stake .

Then later say let`s get rid of the bunker .It wastes time , it`s spoiling the flow of the game .

Like a dog chasing it`s own tail .

If being down in confidence in one of the worst performing sides in Rugby League history but working your ass off to try and change that is coasting, then yeah he coasted.

Oates was one of the few that actually did try.

Dude !
He admitted himself he was taking it easy the last cpl of seasons . The interview is on the Broncos official media page ...

Agree, he was just trying to fend off a defender to give himself a bit of time and space to pass it to Ezra. I didn't think for a second there was any emotional attachment involved, Milford is just a terrible defender, always has been.

He got worse after he popped his shoulder in Origin . Never was the same IMO .
