Round 16 - Broncos vs Rabbitohs - Post Match Discussion

Sorry but they are not good examples IMO, Hodges running across field and beating a pathetic attempt and a dummy half run for an inside pass against a well beaten side which can't tackle at the best of times.

These are the plays the team should be doing more of: Hodges in space, and one way how Gillett should be used.

Watch from 1'38" Hodges, and 2'44" Gillett

Seems like he has mirrored that same try you posted. It is a given though if Hodges is given space he can explode through a hole. I don't know if it is just me but Hodges looks like he is running so slow in that Newcastle clip. Even though he explodes with the step through the line, it doesn't look like he is running any faster than he was when he was going across field.

Agree with this +1000

Have been thinking similarly for a while now

The forward pass rule is about receiving an unfair advantage

There's stuff all advantage in a ball that goes marginally forward

Rule of thumb: If you have to look at 3 replays to decide if a pass is forward, the team has not received any advantage

COULD NOT AGREE MORE

The point is not the opposition. The point is that Gillett got the ball with room to move and while running at speed, and that the inside pass was secondary to the outside dummy, and the angles run, which is NOT how we usually use our back rowers. What we do too much is play flat flat flat and too often one out and as others have posted, against class defense, that style of play will get squashed 99% of the time.

As for Hodges, again the point is that his right foot step, fend and offloading to a running support player is the key to his effectiveness. Instead we use him as a dummy half runner most of the time. He either gets nailed with the ball or offloads to a flat footed support who either gets nailed or gets a pass away within a flat attacking structure, again with everyone standing still.

Hook may well have got the defense right but the attack at the moment will never out score the top sides.

thats the thing - we dont "use him as a dummy half runner", he just gets in there and does useless dummy half runs much like how devere used to. when hodges wants the ball, he goes to dummy half. i dont think thats coaching, its hodges wanting to get the ball. i still dont understand how he makes so much ground from dummy half sometimes - if you see hodges going to dummy half, you know hes going to run.

because the first tackle on hodges NEVER sticks.

if that was true he'd score 50+ tries a season. he often gets tackled on the first attempt. what im saying is that i dont understand why as soon as hodges goes into dummy half, both markers dont just make a bee-line for him.

Just because the first markers misses doesn't mean the second won't AP, or are you only allowed one attempt to tackle a player.

He is predictable but knowing he's going to do it is one thing

this needs to happen more for all our outside backs. they're always so flat and catching the ball with the defense already in their face.

That's the one thing we've noticably missed since Locky left. Hodges doesn't get any early ball any more. Give him the ball with space between himself and the defence and he'll create something.

Still haven't seen the Souths game but I heard Gillett was playing front row. What a terrible waste, for his sake and for the team's sake we need to get him out wider pronto.

Even more of a waste when we leave Dodds getting splinters on the bench for 80 minutes.
