Round 16 - Broncos vs Rabbitohs - Post Match Discussion

Agree with Jeb -- easily the best performance Civo has put in this year. Hopefully he can take that form into Origin.

Have to say I do think we got the rub of the green a lot last night. That Copley try had two forward passes leading up to it and the Hunt stripped ball penalty was a blunder too -- there's nothing to even gain by raking the ball out on the last as the result would be the same, so not sure why the ref would rule like he did. Oh, that inball pass from Thaiday to Hoffman was forward. No square up, just 1 correct call and 2 incorrect calls.

Even with those breaks, we were still easily the better team. Dominated almost every aspect of the game and whilst we got the luck when it came to the calls, we were in no way lucky to win.

That said, I would still like to thank Andrew Everingham for bombing that try in such epic fashion. Given the stage of the game it happened at, I think that moment was far more consequential than any of the refereeing mistakes last night. Thanks Mr. Everingham, and keep going yourself -- my fantasy team appreciates it.

To some extent he has yes but he also says the souths player had the ball on it and from what I see in the replay he is trying to knock the ball lose(and as for those saying why would you try to strip the ball on the last near your line, to keep them from maintaing their momentum in a tacking and scoring or making it it look like a knock on instead of being able getting an offload that leads to a try), tbh I think it was a 50/50 call I wouldn't have even had a problem if they hadn't given the penalty and ruled a knock on/play on or turnover to souths, but they did and IMO it didn't cost them the game, not given the game flow and there was still ample time for Souths to comeback.

All I really read from that article was that Hunt tried to offload whilst a Souths played tried to wrap up the ball by putting a hand on it. If it's not the 5th tackle Hunt wouldn't think about offloading because the Souths defence had done a good job of wrapping up the footy. That's not 50/50 IMO, that's bad luck for Souths. But it certainly didn't cost them the game. I mean, even if the right call was made, Dave Taylor would just have given it back the next set anyway.

Ugly game, especially in the first half, but always under control really. We could and should have put 40+ on the bunnies if we had that bit more control, space and executed just a little bit better. When Inglis smashed Hoffman, Wallace should have dummied the pass and he would have gone straight through. The telegraphed pass to Merritt was an almost certain 4 points for us if Norman had looked before passing, and there was another line break in the first half which was miserably finished...

I thought the Hoffman try was a harsh call against us. Thaiday's movement was backwards even if the ball may have floated forward, and the refs made up for it with that pass from Norman to Reed, which really was miles forward.
The strip was a 50/50 call, as Reynolds hand was all over the ball and the movement looked like a strip, regardless of Hunt trying to offload.
Anyone trying to blame the refs for the loss is an idiot that didn't see how much our pack dominated theirs, getting us so often over the advantage line.

I wouldn't touch our defense, although Te'o trying to do a shoulder charge so close to his own line is nothing but a brain fart, but I have a feeling that Hook is stifling our attack with a very flat and one-dimensional game plan, besides under-utilising one of our greatest weapons in Matt Gillett.
I'm assuming he worries that giving the likes of Norman or Gillett free reign could impact our defensive starch and discipline negatively...?
His recent admission about his doubts on whether some players would cope is an indication that he may worry too much, and may possibly be the reason for his odd bench and interchange choices, such as Gillett in the front row practically, or Dodds not getting any minutes...
We definitely need to give ourselves more room to execute the plays and like someone said, make sure everyone knows which play you're going to execute before it starts! It sometimes looks like they don't train much their attack...

Anyway, as long as they're firing at the right time, I have no problem winning ugly, although deservedly like last night!

Was the Thaiday pass really forward? It didn't look too bad if the Norman pass got an ok then surely that should've as well.

I think the Thaiday pass was flat at worst but Hoffman slightly over ran it and had to reach back to catch it and made it look worse than what it was.

from the first angle the thaiday pass to hoffman looks line ball at worst. from the second angle though, its clearly thrown forward not just floated forward or line ball. correct call.

on the strip, there is no way it was a strip. just watch the replay. the souths guys are just trying to secure the ball, and mccullough just flings his arm out and the ball falls out in the process. it was not a strip in any way shape or form. it was a bad call.

the referees didnt cost souths the game, but boy oh boy did they make some big blunders that did cost souths points and possession.

Ahem, I Believe it was Hunt.

I still think there's been 100 passes this year worse than the Thaiday to Hoffman pass let go. 2 of them were in the Copley try.

I hate the inconsistency. It's like if it's an inside ball if it looks remotely flat, they'll call it forward. Conventional passes they let go.
I'd be happier to just leave benefit of the doubt on forward passes and just call the blatant ones.

Hunt then, but who it was isnt the point.

No doubt, and yep, inside balls are nearly always ruled forward even if they're not. this time the call was correct at least. Video ref needs to be able to rule on forwards passes.

I didn't really have any problems with the Thaiday pass, I thought it was great. On the other hand, the Norman pass definitely looked forward, and Reed's was somewhere in between the two.

But WTF was reed doing in front of the guy with ball?

Is it just me or is he doing it a lot lately?

Probably because we play with zero depth, makes it easy to accidentally wonder in front.

He is!
I paid attention to Reed's positioning in attack last night, and he is invariably in front of his inside man (Glenn mostly) at the start of the play. Someone like Glenn or Norman needs to tell him to move further back. Give yourself some space ffs!

Shouldn't have to tell an international centre to get behind your inside man.
