POST GAME [Round 17, 2022] Broncos vs Dragons

emulated the last 12 months of Alex Glenn - the "good" games were good by his standard, but not NRL standard. James was cut down by halves practically on the spot of first contact, did a lot of running sideways to shuffle the ball wide because Kev knew he would be useless as a battering ram. He was better in defence but he's well, well past it. Against a more competent attack, he would have been shown up hard.

Let's not delude ourselves, the Dragons were freaking horrible without Hunt yesterday. Let's take the two points, get our proper forwards back and be happy with that and R James annoucing his retirement very soon hopefully.
I think it's equally deluded to overlook that while the Dragons were missing 1, we were missing 10, and still rolled them. No need to play down good, important wins.

Flegs would cop minimum 3 weeks and the NSW media would be all over him

When the studies about CTE go public .
And parents don`t let their children sign on as juniors . Maybe then the NRL will take high shots more seriously ?

One week for contact like that ? Kennedy could have brain trauma that could shorten his life .
Have a slap on the wrist Tariq and don`t do it again . FFS ! .

I agree but it’s a slippery slope. I’m not sure I can imagine a future where NFL as we recognise it even exists

I am surprised the Nanny state hasn`t intervened already .
You know the amount of money the NFL is the USA had to pay out ?

Protecting your team mate from getting illegally hit late because the ref won't do his job, isn't something I define as cheating.
If we deliberately obstruct the defence, we should expect to be penalized. Anything short of that is literally the "ref not doing his job."

Just because we're the least penalized team in the NRL doesn't mean the refs will turn a blind eye to us deliberately cheating to gain an advantage.

Every other team does it. You don't win premierships by taking the moral high ground. Those who bend and break the rules do win premierships just ask melbourne, roosters, penrith and sharks

It's not a "moral" issue, it's so you don't get penalized for breaking the rules. There's already enough tantrums in here about us being penalized despite every other team being penalized more.

I'm not across the rules to the degree that I know the answer to this - but I assume it's fine to hold your ground, as it is with players on the receiving team holding their ground in front of their teammate attempting to catch a high kick? So long as they don't deliberately make a movement to impede an opposition player, there is no obstruction. So it's not really a matter of cheating, but rather having structures in place that ensure Reynolds is kicking from behind teammates who are artfully positioned to ensure that opposition players need to run around them and therefore delay the pressure being applied.

Rules are here:

Annersley explains how they're interpreted:

Summed up: you can't put yourself in the road of the defence to impede them making a tackle on a ball carrier. The tactic of building a "wall," for example, is specifically banned.

The Wall
If two or more players form a wall (side by side) next to the play the ball and don’t allow the opportunity for a defending player to move directly towards the player in possession, the referee will penalise for obstruction.

So yeah, providing you're not side-by-side and deliberate about it, seems like the rules do not prevent the strategic placement of players in front of the kicker? I'm at work and can't watch the video, so maybe Annesley has a different interpretation.

And yet, how does boxing even exist? Where the actual point of the contest is to hit the other person, and it is most effectively done when hitting in the head?

If there is enough money to be made, there is a way to protect it.

OBSTRUCTION

Obstruction
The indicators for an obstruction include:
1 (a) ‘Block’* or ‘Flat’ runner (who do not receive the ball) must not stop in the middle of the defensive line
(b) ‘Block’ or ‘Flat’ runner (who do not receive the ball) must not run at (chest or outside shoulder of) defender and initiate contact

(c) The Referee or Review Officials can determine the significance of contact initiated by
the ‘Block’ or ‘Flat’ runner (who does not receive the ball) in impeding a defender’s involvement in a try scoring play

2 Ball Carriers must not run behind an active ‘Block’ or ‘Flat’ runner and disadvantage the defensive line

3 It will be deemed obstruction if the attacking players who run a ‘Sweep’^ line clearly
receive the ball on the inside of the ‘Block’ or ‘Flat’ runner

4 Defensive decisions that commit defender to initiating contact with an attacking player(s) will not be deemed obstruction

5 Defensive decisions that commit defender to change their defensive line will not be deemed obstruction.*Block runners run lines towards an opposition goal line and are committed to receiving the ball close to the defensive line

^Sweep runners run lines in an arc across the field behind a block runner

The Wall
If two or more players form a wall (side by side) next to the play the ball and don’t allow the
opportunity for a defending player to move directly towards the player in possession, the referee
will penalise for obstruction.

Escorts
A player is not to ‘deliberately obstruct an opponent who is not in possession’ Section 15 (j)
It will be interpreted to be an obstruction in regards to a player catching the ball from a kick if:
1 A player arrives at the same time as an opponent and obstructs him deliberately; or
2 Deliberately runs an opponent off the ball.
This applies to both the kicking and non-kicking teams.
It will NOT be considered an obstruction in regards to a player catching the ball from a kick if:
1 A defending player moves directly towards the ball; and
2 Takes up a position prior to the ball being caught.

Diving Through the Ruck
If, in the process of scoring a try an attacking player dives through the ruck or into a teammate including the player who played the ball and impacts on the defence, he will be penalised for an obstruction.
Sleeper
An attacking player who loiters next to the play the ball area and who causes an obstruction will be penalised

Side by side by the play the ball so if they're not by the PTB then fair game?

Or you can stagger players - one next to the player playing the ball and one in line with the dummy half but taking the space next to the other wall player, just half a metre behind them
