Round 2 - Broncos vs Cowboys - Post Match Discussion

Once again you play the man and not the ball. Good work boof.

So you don't a guy wiping out 3 defenders isn't giving his team some sort of advantage? I mean really? Most times I'd imagine it'd lead to a loose ball and give the other team a numbers advantage.

It's not just Yow Yeh missing the ball though, it's him moving his hip mid-air in a desperate bid to make any kind of contact with the ball that's been ruled as him impeding the defence.

In your example it would be no advantage at all. The only way it give them an advantage is if the big man takes out the defenders before the ball is at catchable height, and then the trailing attacking player takes an easy catch. But THAT should be a penalty, because it's obvious what the big man's intentions are. To take them out just before the ball hits the ground would be stupid, as it would then hit someone on the head, knee, back, testicles or whatever, and bounce in any which direction. It's a football, not a soccer ball, and if the trailer followed close enough to catch the ball before it hit the ground, well then that would ALSO make it obvious what they're intentions were, so therefore no try penalty. See how this common sense things works Big Pete Archer-Maxwell?

As for Yow Yeh leading with his hip - who cares? It shouldn't be illegal in the game. As I said, your best high flyers in the game will do anything to make sure they get to that ball first. They go up with knees forward, knees the back, shoulders clinched, whatever it takes. That's the way it bloody well should be. It's not like it's the NBA and they are going for a rebound, but even then that wouldn't have been given a foul. In the air contests shouldn't just be between both players hands without either of them coming into contact with each other. How boring would that be!!

That's my whole point - saying that the guy is going for the ball simply isn't a good enough excuse and it's up to him to be able to time his jump.

And obviously the refs. do, especially when you miss time your jump like Yow Yeh did.

The thing is, we all agree it was a tough call from the refs so I don't know what these little stabs are about.

I hope Harrigan explains the call tomorrow, it will be interesting to get an official word on it.

Yep, Tamou was excellent. He's going to be a big player for the Cowboys in the coming years, gets through a lot of work, but also makes an impact.

Scott was Scott. Absolutely ate the metres up.

Agree on Thompson as well. He was a livewire throughout, always looked threatening running at the line.

Thanks ningnangnong and noisetheory for your feedback.

Agree with Big Pete here, really don't think Yow Yeh was trying to get to the ball, maybe he tried to make it look as though he was going for the ball but I reckon it looks like Yow Yeh was trying to obstruct him.

Yowee had his eyes up and was making an attempt to catch the footy. No way is that a penalty. If he catches it, play on - no penalty. If he fumbles it, knock on - no penalty.

As a former AFL fan, this is one of the things that pi$$ed me off with AFL. A player would go for a spectacular mark by climbing up the back of another player, and if he takes it it's a screamer. If he drops it, he is penalised for a push in the back of an opposing player. I hated this because it's so blatantly and moronically stupid. An action is either legal or illegal. It's not legal if the outcome is 1 way, and illegal if the outcome is another.

That's like saying robbing a bank is legal if you don't get away with the money, and illegal if you do. An action is either legal or illegal.

Contesting a high ball and interfering with another player whilst doing so is legal, whether you catch it or not. It's only illegal if you're not contesting the ball and just trying to take out the player. No way is Yowee doing that

The Yow Yeh example to me is line ball.

If he arrives a second earlier than he already did, to me it's just a blatant penalty. You're not allowed to obstruct the opposition from getting to the ball any other time, 'contesting the ball' shouldn't exempt you from that.

Has Harrigan said anything about it yet?

So what your saying big Pete is that the try Izzy scored in origin should have been a penalty?

Nope.

Izzy positioned himself perfectly, timed his jump perfectly and did everything he could to take the ball.

Yow Yeh jumps too early, leads in with the hip and seemingly takes his arms away from the ball mid-air.

So once again, if he caught it there wouldn't have been a penalty.

If he had of positioned himself, timed his jump better and not shirked his arms away, then yes.

im bored. just watched the replay. personally i think no way should that have been given a penalty. the cowboys winger stayed grounded. yow yeh was attempting a catch

yow yeh got to it first. if he caught it would it still be a penalty? he knocked on anyway from what i can tell.

i dont agree with the 'lead with hip' being a reason for penalising. every winger does it these days. they try to catch it side on in both attack/defense so that if its dropped it preferably falls backwards.

anyway its not a real important point.

this 'smart replay' thing on nrl.com is pretty cool
