Round 20 - Storm vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

As Porthoz said, more unhappy with the scoreline than anything else as I don't think it's a true reflection of how the game was played. Broncos weren't terrible, they're just not quite in the same league as the Storm yet (who were, as ever, absolutely clinical in defence).

To be honest, I think we're probably only good for one win over the Storm each year, and I would much rather that come in the finals than now. I think last night was a good indication of where we're at in the comp and what we need to do to become a real force in September.

what we need to do is learn some serious attacking plays and stick to them. This has largely been the bane of this side all season. We have the players to beat
any side. We just don't use them.

Hodges. ATM he does bugger all except run from dummy half. It's not his fault. There are no set backline moves to use his abilities to break the line. Instead he runs into a pack of forwards. Reed? When was he on the end of a wide and deep attacking play? It's not their fault. There's bugger all play making.

Gillet. WTF? He's a f***ing WEAPON. So what do we do with him? One out one out one out. F**k

Thaiday. Same old same old. Every side has him pegged.

Assuming winning the prem. is the goal, it's irrelevant being content with where we are on the ladder. What's relevant is having the attacking plays to trouble the only other teams who have a chance: Dragons, Manly n Storm.

On last night's performance, we won't win against any of those sides as we have no attack to penetrate their defence.

Our defence is excellent more or less (except for YY who just won't learn). So come on Hook, start with the plays that result in tries. Please.

Agreed but in fairness to him Beale annoyed him in the change rooms so Beale must be blamed
I did my best not to make you cry, but I guess it's inate...

Storm got quick play the balls, we didnt

2 stupid errors gave them 2 tries.

Hodges was ****

Herp derp, herp derp. Your agenda is boring and clueless so enjoy watching Beale on the wing. Herp derp derp

No boring is the NRL allowing melbourne to lay in the play the ball like a ****ing prostitute but penalizing anyteam that tries the same..

Seems like the NRL feel sorry for taking all their points etc & are letting them get away with things other teams can't.

It really is on topic . Portaloo stated his agenda in the op.
Wow, Beads using an insult to reply, and I was expecting something actually meaningful from you as usual...

Oh wait

Yawn, you are such a better person than me I am truly shattered what a forum hero who really lacks a clue about league thinks of me. I think I will cry now.

Anyway Ben hunt really
Is not giving us much off the bench and in think baptiste is the better option for the team.

The Nrl is a ****ing joke

They don't lay all over the ptb. They slow down the runner with multiple defenders and get the runner on their back every single time.

Great coaching and great execution by a team that schooled the Broncos (and the rest of the league) on how to play football.

Is it really how football or what they turned football into with the wrestling tactics they brought into the game?? They are brilliant at it but i would think fast play the balls would be better for the game..

I agree, but unfortunately the nrl doesn't - super league was all about quick play the balls to keep the pace up and keep it exciting, but as soon as the NRL was formed they went out of their way to get rid of that style of football.

We have nothing in attack to trouble the top sides. Nothing. Nix. Bugger all. Tonight was basically one out running. Over and over. No width. No depth. No clever inside or outside balls to players on the run.

been saying this all season. no depth from the backs. no early ball.

i think we were the better side in the first half but obviously couldnt do anything about it.

as long as the team learns and moves forward from the game.

not sure what everyones problem with the storm defense is. they are just successfully doing what coaches have been trying to get their teams to do for years. hell my under 11's coach 18 years ago was trying to get us to do that stuff.

i reckon they do just as well in countering their own defense style when in attack. they go low with the ball and make sure as they're hit in a tackle they're already going forward onto their knees/stomach for the quick play the ball.

Well not quite, it took them a good 4 years to get rid of it. Abolishing the unlimited interchange is what did the trick.

I don't like what the Storm do either, but seriously, how can you police it other than to call held earlier and penalise quicker for going on with it? That'd be the only way. But in turn you'd take away those sneaky late offloads that have been prominent this year, where the attacking player manages to "win" the wrestle and get his arms free.

So, do we abolish the Storm's effective slow down tactics and second phase play, or just hope coaches/teams come up with ways to counter what the Storm does (which won't happen, teams will just copy them)?

It felt like the ref's were waiting for the 3rd man in Storm player before they yelled HELLLLD. A few times Thaiday, Gillett & Hodges were on their feet and the ref wouldn't blow held until that 3rd man in. It really shat me off.

*i posted this before i read any of this thread. This is the bug I got from the game.
