POST GAME Round 22 - Cowboys vs Broncos

Whilst disappointed, I’m not even remotely surprised.

The ‘rivalry’ went to the NRL script, we played like easy-beats in the first half and couldn’t close out a game.

Why is anyone shocked by that.

EDIT: my biggest hate from tonight; Boyd’s lack of effort to even try and get there to stop JT2 after he spilled the ball - classic Boyd. He got back to his feet, trailed back, but jogged at half-arse pace. If he truly cared, if he was a true leader, he’d try harder. He was close enough to make an effort if he wanted to.

I honestly want to know if Boyd’s attitude in these moments are even pointed out in the video reviews or does Father Wayne conveniently fast forward the tape to cover it up.

Look we all know Wayne has tapped players on the shoulder before who were still playing decent football (aka Parker) but I honestly believe now that his emotionally attachment to Boyd is seriously clouding his judgment and he will fall on his sword as a result

even with Walters we will likely continue with Boyd, and even if he moves from fullback, he will not lose the captaincy.

Good origin coaches (and i wouldn't even put Walters in that category) don't always make good club coaches ... you need to look no further than Meninga to see that ... most successful coach in origin history, but a club winning record of around 50%.

Walter has done nothing in club coaching (in either the ISC or ESL)

JD on the other hand has had success everywhere he has gone:

  • player coach of Keighley Cougars (2011-2012) - Gained promotion in his first season
  • Northern Pride (2013-2014) - back to back minor premierships; won the ISC premiership and inaugural state championship in 2014
  • QLD Residents coach (2014) - defeated NSW in that game
  • Assistant at the Cowboys in 2015 (we all know what happened there)
  • Assistant at Dragons and Illawarra Cutters coach in 2016 - NSW Cup premiers and a second state championship (also named as the NSW Cup coach of the year in 2016)

Just like football players, reserve grade coaching means f-all when it comes to the NRL.

Maccas i can see why people aren't happy with, but not Moose. He is still consistently good, he just needs to cut the grubbiness out of his game

Some bad misses in the dogs game. His ruck defence has been shit over the last month. The crap in his game is to blame IMO

He is still generally one of our best forwards though. I still don't like him at lock honestly, but I agree the grubbiness in his game isn't helping him.

A guy like Kodi NEEDS to be amazing in attack because his defence is non existent. Unfortunately he is not. He is very inconsistent. He makes the wrong plays far too often. It's frustrating that none of the other halfbacks we have are given an opportunity......i doubt they would be much worse.

I feel like the other top clubs around the league would not have persisted with Kodi if he were on their rosters. It does not seem very professional from our club to just accept the mediocrity.

Speaking of mediocrity, Andrew McCullough is the very definition of it! Young Cook from South's is a great example of what a good dummyhalf can do for a footy side. We seem stuck in an Andrew McCullough loop we just can seem to escape from...its like ground hog day.

And lastly, Darius Boyd. He might not even be in the top 16 fullbacks in the comp. Some clubs would have better backups then him I reckon.

How are we meant to compete when 3 of our spine are sub-par? It's not surprising that literally no other team in the comp seems threatened by us. How can the club not see these things? We are meant to be the biggest club in the game.

I still think macca can cut the mustard for us going forward if he could pass to a decent halfback and had a full back that could do more than lay in the ruck and piss and moan.

They don't ever play advantage with ruck infringements, so it was just a late call. Frustrating I agree, but consistent with how they've been reffing this year.

Here is an instance of it happening earlier in the year with two other teams.

I know the instance you're talking about but you also can't go back and adjudicate on the ruck once it's cleared otherwise the video ref would be able to check dropped balls and penalties in the ruck on try reviews.

The ref blew the penalty WELL after the ball had cleared the ruck. I also didn't hear anything on commentary between the ref and assistants... usually on a delayed penalty you'll hear the assistant ref screaming penalty, penalty, penalty for a ruck infringement, but there was crickets over the telecast, that says to me it was either the bunker calling for the penalty (apparently they are talking to the ref all game) or the ref decided well well after the fact to call a penalty.

In either scenario why would a penalty be called that late?? The next play was well in action we had moved on and were about to score. It was an incorrect and wrong call that literally cost us the game.

Yeah we played like shit and maybe didn't deserve the win but you know what we were still denied it by an incorrect call.

If that happens to 15 other teams it'd be blasted over the papers all week (like it was for the storm), the refs boss would be out indicating a wrong call, etc. Etc. Etc.

What kind of explanation/outrage do we get as a fanbase??? **** all because fairytale, JT wins last ever derby, blah blah blah.

Funny to see (yet again) that Sims was one of our "better" players last night..
The bloke is leaving the club next year and in the last few weeks is one of very few that are actually standing up.
Side note, I hope WB continues trend and takes DB with him next year. I honestly think that game will have made the board very confident that WB is not the future moving forward.
If we cannot get Seibold to the club from 2019 I would be going after Walters. I think he at least he has the balls to drop under performing players eg Thaiday and Boyd.. and may put the club in some better light then what dull old WB offers week in week out.
Super disappointed after last night..I don't care if we dont make the 8 now, we will more then likely be punted in the first week of the finals anyway..

Walters. No fucking way, I would have you coach the team before Walters.

Things can change from week in and week out in this league but I think it is fair to say this side can't/ won't go far. As I said before, the Broncos are like a flaky friend. You like them but know you can't count on them.

I used to want Kev, but honestly I think we need a completely new approach.
Kev made some very poor decisions in origin so I don’t think he’s right for us. He can’t hamdle the pressure.

There are a lot of people across here and FB saying this. Changed their tune on Origin only, which is fair enough, but how are people overlooking his whopping 37% win rate in ESL. Sure, he got them close to the top, but that's an absolutely pathetic stat.

Or do people actually believe he was able to turn from being a crap coach, into a master coach after a couple of years under Bellamy and Bennett?

Kodi needs what all good halves need in defence, a baby sitter. If Gilletts on the field, he isn't having anywhere near as many problems as he is this year with us having to use so many second rowers due to Gilletts injury. Thurston is pretty useless that's why Cooper sits next to him all game. Locky wasn't too flash either thus Tunza sitting next to him all game too. WB needs to pull Kodi and his second row partner aside every game and tell who ever is playing on that side in the second row just to look after Kodi in defence and not let him get isolated.

I think we slide out of the 8 from here because I just can't see us winning another game. I hope like **** I'm wrong, but I just can't see us beating the Bunnies or the Chooks. Maybe Manly but even so, it would rely on a number of other teams in the 8 dropping games. Some of them by a fair margin.

We could beat the Roosters if Keary is still out or underdone, but otherwise I think the difference in form is too huge right now.

Broncs win the next two games, count on it. This game they were always going to drop, they suck against other teams that also suck.

The Broncs look tired, lethargic and disinterested. Their season is on the line from here on in, look for them to turn it all around next week and everyone starting talking them up again.

This team could win it this year, they tend to step up against better opposition which they will face all throughout the finals.

I like Macca. But....
He really offers zero attacking threat currently.

By this, I mean the tight spot defenders don’t really have to worry about him going, and challenging the defensive line. This in turn, allows these defenders to chase hard from the inside, as Macca isn’t holding them up. The major issue with this, is that Milford’s greatest weapon is stepping back against the grain. If Macca was holding up that slide, it allows Milf some more space. As it stands, Macca doesn’t hold up the defence - Milf steps into defenders who are pushing on his inside.

Maccas service is great. Defence is great and game awareness is great. But his biggest weakness in my opinion is the above. No threat to the defence impacts the space his halves have, which impacts the edge backrowers and Centres. It’s a flow on effect.

The concerning thing also, is that Maccas speed seems to be rapidly decreasing too! Which I didn’t think possible!
