There was one instance in the game that confused me and has me concerned moving forward. 52nd minute, the Brisbane Broncos lead 20-6 and receive a penalty inside the attacking zone.
You only want to go for the two for these following reasons (and even then, going for the try may still be the better option):
1. If the kick will tie the game with time running low. Any other time in the game, and it is a marginally worse option.
2. If the kick will put you in the lead. (1-2 points ahead, after successful kick). This is the best mathematical option.
3. If the kick will put you up a converted try + conversion (8 points ahead, after successful kick)
4. If the kick will put you up two converted tries + conversion (14 points ahead, after successful kick)
5. Strategic kick due to time.
Going for a 6 point lead - the margins are basically the same. Going for a 10 point lead it is negative. Going for a 12 point lead it is slightly negative.
Once you are above 14 points -- it is never a better mathematical option.
As the leading team’s advantage increases, the marginal value of each point gets much, much smaller. The NFL have done many simulations around this. Time for the NRL, and the Broncs in particular, to get smarter here.
Another area we need to get a lot smarter in - 4th tackle options.
