I'd like to give Oates a shot at fullback. He is built similar to Inglis and has proven that he is good under the high ball.

oates played all his junior club and rep footy in the 1 jersey and he was pretty good, however I think those days are beyond him now as he has bever played top line opposition in that position. I think they need to use him for longer minutes on the edge though as he can cause massive inroads in attack and both defense.

Yeah I agree that they probably are behind him, but I am just saying that I would have liked to have seen it happen. Especially considering we have "5 fullbacks" and none of them are actual fullbacks. I definitely think something different is needed for us this year.

Oates on the wing or the centres is one thing, though he was great attacking wise defensively last season. Oates was caught out with his positional placement, something a fullback can't afford, even a more experienced fullback like barba this season was caught out from it, to throw Oates with no nrl grade exp there and assuming little lower grade if any is a big ask, he might be sized like hodges and inglis but both those players have played a lot of football there at different grades of the game.
I agree with you about the experience required and that's something I mentioned also when I stated 'it's a position that takes time to learn' while pointing out he needed to lose a few kilos. From that you'd have to deduce I wasn't supporting an idea to throw Oates in now. I do however think Oates could theoretically play fullback given some time and effort.

For mine, Oates is no FB. I am yet to see any play making ability from him at this level, unlike Hodges who has a very good pass on him, as well as that step. I think he is an ideal FB in attack if Maranta is to defend there. I hope Maranta doesn't blow it again this week. That knock on on our line was dreadful.

Oates IMO is a big centre who can play well in the back row. As I keep saying (yawn), all things being equal, he can be our next Gene Miles. 2-3 years in the centres with Copley, then move to the back row when our current ones retire or move on.

I would have loved to have seen Copley and Oates named in the centres, with Reed to the wing. Oates really deserves more game time. He is like Copley, a real strike weapon - big, very fast, very dangerous.

This team really needs strike weapons. We have them. We don't use them. They're either left to create their own chances too often, or they are on the bench, like Oates, with minimal game time.

Gillett and Thaiday are good examples. Gillett is too often given the ball in the hope he pulls a rabbit out of the hat (and is crucified when he doesn't), or too rarely, Barba or Hunt set him up with a hole and he scores or makes tries.

Thaiday should be running on the edge at the opposition's backs and ball playing close to their line in regular set plays - something he does well. Instead, he is all too often a battering ram who makes too few metres in the middle

Hope Bennett fixes what's definitely broke (including Gillett's defensive technique) despite the fact we will flog his Kniggots this week end

I totally support the idea of Oates as a centre. In fact I also keep saying so last year and earlier this year but was drowned out by posters insisting they wanted Oates as a wide running second rower or doing dumb arse grunt work, not like we don't have enough players to do dumb arse grunt work. Like yourself I would have loved Oates and Copley together in the centres.

griffin has completely lost the plot. his sacking should have been effective immediately.

Yes because Stephen Kearney would have been able to get us into the finals.

It is a tragedy that Kearney wasn't sacked along side Griffin

I think I mentioned it in another thread, possibly after the Bulldogs game that Oates looked to have grown a few cms and was possibly bigger than the last game he played which may have been 2 weeks before. If he's still growing he's going to be a man mountain. Hopefully Bennett can get full value out him.

Maranta at fullback and Copley on the wing? WTF

Can I select the team please Mr Paul White I can surely do a lot better than this.

It's a possibility he could succeed there but I have my doubts you would get the best out of him, still you would get more out of him certainly more so then say as a halfback or a 5/8th, still I think at the end of the day his future lies in at centre or the second row, also I may have posted that side in jest I don't think its was the worst suggestion for a player positional move, I just don't think at the present time his ready for such a positional change. Also I didn't think you were supporting such a move either, just suggesting it was possible.

His going to be the ideal centre or secondrower, we just have to make sure we hang onto him, very vital for our future IMO.

I wouldn't mind Griffin working at Maccas. If he's true to form he will bulk up every burger and they'll all be bigger than they should be.
That sounds like good value to me.

This post cracks me up, well done!!

lol, just read through the outrage over the team list - people are surprised about this kind of thing anymore?

Shuffling the deckchairs and all that, that good gameplan gets executed once in a blue moon and we'll never know when or why it happens.

Really, not that much more needs to be done than Hunt and Barba calling the shots, and regularly giving the edges some structure and opportunities, and Barba in particular supporting Parker at all times, and using Copley to the max.

Wait ...look! there's a flying pig!

its pretty entertaining to be honest.

seriously, the backline WON'T line up like that in attack.

in defense, well im happy for copley vidot and maranta to be the back three because im not keen on throwing a rookie kid into a do or die game, and the only other option would be kahu, but he hasnt played a whole lot this season anyway..
