Round 24 - Knights vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

It was weird seeing them get the dropsies after such a solid opening few minutes. But whatever, it shows Newy are just making up the numbers in the final 8. I bet the Storm would rather be facing the Knights instead of the Bunnies.

The good thing is Locky was fuming about the second half of the first half and let the players know it. They got their heads right in the second half.

People are being critical (and I didn't see the game), but having seen reports and read people's comments, I think it's actually an impressive win. It would be very easy to have just kept going through the motions and maybe lose, without it affecting too much for the season, but they got their heads right, repelled the Knights' early second half push, and then ran away with it. The 6 points for Newcastle is the most impressive thing, considering from what I hear the Knights were attacking pretty much the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half.

Very happy with the win. Let's just hope Hodges' injury isn't too bad and he's back for the finals.

Who else thought the Wallace try was obvious, yet the fox comentators seemed convinced Gidley had grounded it. Alexander at least got it right at the end but the other 2 just couldn't see it. WTF?
Laurie Daley kept saying "clearly Gidley has knocked it on, it's no try" WTF DALEY?
If you knock the ball on the other team can pick it up and play on. It's called the Zero tackle. What a moron.

Also, I hate hate hate Brandy commentating the Broncos. He really hates them.

Emma and I thought Daley was smoking crack when he kept saying that. We were like "does he realise the video ref is checking for a BRONCOS try not Newcastle?"

LOLZ. Wouldn't surprise me.

It doesn't seem to matter what crew covers a game, they always seem to be "against" the Broncos. Alexander, Daley and Smith are horrible on Fox. Of course, I don't have Fox, so I listened to the first 20 minutes in the car on Triple M and ABC radio (switching between).

Triple M with Dan Ginnane - seriously, 2 minutes in he's saying "Looking at the energy in the opening minutes the Knights are well on top". 2 minutes later the Broncos score that controversial try and then another one a few minutes after that. What does he do? "Knights are throwing this game away, no respect for the football!".

ABC with Craig Hamilton - serious excitement every time the Knights make a tackle. Every mistake, dead silence and as little commentary on the Broncos' attack as possible.

FFS. Drives me mad.

There were a lot of people blowing up on Twitter when Gidley knocked the ball, Laurie Daley says "a rare mistake from the Knights fullback". LOL! A rare mistake? A rare mistake that happens each game. No wonder he keeps getting picked for NSW origin.

I hate it any time a commentator says it's a "rare mistake" or "you won't see that again this year" when someone with a reputation makes an error. Used to hear it all the time about Johns, hear it whenever Locky makes a mistake, Thurston, Slater etc. Every player makes mistakes, no matter how good they are. It's yet another commentator cliche that increases the cringe factor of watching rugby league.

I also hate it when a team loses a scrum against the head or a scrum penalty is given, and the commentator says "haven't seen that since 1973" it happens once or twice a season ffs. And if I had a dollar for everytime Lockyer dropped the ball and the commentator says "you won't see a mistake like that again from lockyer"...i'd have about $7

i think they got that 'benefit of the doubt' try 100% wrong. it was easily one of the hardest decisiosn i can remember for a video ref, so i cant really be too harsh on them for the decision, and it went our way so thats a bonus, but i thought gidley grounded it before a bronco got to it.

remember, all you need is a fingernail to TOUCH the ball ANYWHERE once its in goals/on the line and its a drop out. looking at the replays, theres 99.9999999% certainty that he did that at least once in all his efforts.

anyways, good to get the win. played well in parts, played poorly in others. handling was the big issue, but it was wet so its at least a bit forgivable. that defensive lapse to let uate score was a shocker on wallaces part.

parker had a great game, 5 offloads to his name was excellent. they add such an extra dimension to our game. mcguire was great, halas shot was a bellringer, and hoffman was in fine form.

hodges, well what do you say? by the look on his face, and how it happened, youd have to think hes done for the season. how much longer are we going to keep paying him the big bucks to sit on the sideline for 3/4 of the season?

Listening to it on radio, the commentators were saying there was doubt whether the ball was in contact with the try line when Gidley forced it, hence the decision. Given there was "doubt" then the correct decision

Harsh. 1/2 the season :P

He was the only one to tip the Knights.

Forget who it was, but when Brandy tipped the Knights, they asked why he doesn't like the Broncos. (or words similar)

He probably hates us now 'cos Petero is coming back here

Ha. He hated us long before that. I can't remember a single time he was complimentary to the Broncos. But then, I got rid of Foxtel this year, so maybe he has at some stage this year been kind?

McGuire at this rate should have a bench spot locked in for next season.

anyone notice it was pretty much straight after thaiday called mcguire "the jerry can, because he's not quite a (paul) gallen" on the footy show that mcguire has really started aiming up. good stuff.

Ha! Also has come since he got that pretty huge scare with his eye. I'd say that has more to do with it. Stopped him taking his footy for granted.

yeh i realise that, but from the 20+ replays i watched of it there was no doubt that he touched it while it was on the line. he didnt ever have control of it, not even remotely, but he touched it.

but like i said, i cant hold that decision against them as it was a very tough one.

also, im not 100% sure on the benefit of the doubt rule, but at the stage where they were questioning if gidley had touched it on the line or not, there was no Bronco touching it or anything - so im not sure if the benefit of the doubt rule applies. i would assume the benefit of the doubt only goes to the attacking team when the person is potentially scoring a try and theres doubt over if the ball gets grounded etc? i dont think the attacking team should get the benefit of the doubt for a defender grounding the ball when theres no attacker involved, and im not sure if the NRL agrees or not. anyone know?

I didn't see it on the line. He lifted it up before it touched the line.
